Glad you spotted the Fast Car feature for the Rat cars - did you spot the retro rides thanks we gave in the spec sheet bit? I know we have covered the whole Rat Look thing to death (as has many forums recently) and to be honest I doubt it will ever go away, some people just have to pigeon hole the look of a car - it can not just be a car. Myself and my good friend Brett built the car for a few reasons and they are as follows: 1. Both of us have been modding cars for years and both of us have got sick and tired of the constant bitching on forums about other peoples cars. I was personally losing any sort of faith in the hobby and thought we should do a stupid rat car for a bit of fun. 2. Fun! This car is exactly what we wanted from a car, to mess around with, have a laugh with, and not give a single care in the world to what anyone else thought to it 3. We also wanted to prove that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a liked car, for the car to be featured was hilarious but it did show that the car was liked and had injected some much needed humor to modifying cars, every where this car goes people point and laugh and its great! Makes us smile driving it every time! All in all we did it for some fun, to get some much needed restored faith in the modified car community and for a change not to have to worry about where we parked the car, or if it got scratched or dented (in fact we encourage it!!). I am really pleased Fast Car did the feature, people knock the mag and to be fair its not my cup of tea either, but the lads that came to the feature fully got the whole aspect of the cars and that was to have FUN, nothing more, nothing less. Calling it RAT gives it a name, an explanation, but like everything in life its always an evolution or a watered down version of something else in history. don't get to worked up about if its RAT or NOT just enjoy the humor, if you don't get it then laugh at us and not with us Glad the majority get the astra, it wont be around for all that much longer as we feel it has served its purpose Oh and the corse and nova where also built with FUN in mind as well nothing more or less

Whoever said Nu-Rat has hit the nail on the head. It's a look inspired by the rat look of old. I like it if done well. I've seen a current shape Fiesta with a rust bonnet and it looked pretty cool.

Mat couldnt have said it better. we did ut for fun, we enjoyed it. its shock up the whole modified car scene. Its a total curse word take and what ever way you look at it. if You love with and find it funny then it makes us smile, if it really pisses you off that much then it still makes us smile the fact your letting a rusty astra estate curse word you off.

The Astra is just having fun... with the old tv in the boot and 80s games console, and all the other tat... its something different, random, rusty and cool. Its not 'fake rate', its 'nu rat' Whoever said Nu-Rat has hit the nail on the head. It's a look inspired by the rat look of old. I like it if done well. I've seen a current shape Fiesta with a rust bonnet and it looked pretty cool. Nick I am happy to see someone read what I said, thanks

nice to see something a bit different featured I have to say. As far as the whole labeling and arguing part goes, love a car for what it is, not for what you want it to be

by a few who are happy to hide behind their monitors waving the 'opinion' disclaimer in their defense. But still, I maintain my *waves it in MWF's face* opinion on this subject. I'll just bite my tounge for future posts... Chris please don't bite. If I posted one of my cars, or someone else did for me, I'd fully expect and welcome a bit of criticism. If all i have are a bunch of yes-men saying 'very nice' then I wont ever be able to improve, reconsider or re-evaluate my car. Maybe I do, or maybe I don't, want to build it for someone elses approval, but at the same time if i make a horrific decision and the one person who spots my mirror is 3 inches lower on one side... bites his tongue... how will i ever know?! and then i'll get laughed at behind my back instead?! and, tbh, in response to saying they were sick of seeing every car slated and criticised... I suffered the same on a couple of forums watching ugly, badly done cars get praise all round because the people were either their mates, or too in awe of a 'reputation' to say anything else, or just as badly clued up as the owner. I had to start some constructive criticism when i watched the owners heads disappear up their own *ahem* posteriors... And I don't think the Nova or Corsa are rat, and I also don't like the astra although it's a well executed car, but the straw is an overkill I don't enjoy seeing - it's in the trying too hard category imo. But fair play to FC for moving this direction, although well behind time. Open-mindedness works two ways. open-mindedness embraces ALL viewpoints, not just those that are open to the point of anything goes. This is my opinion. deal with it.

well, I've been watching with interest... I like asrat's car, its utterly brilliant imo, and if I'd been judging RRG08, love for the unloved would be on his mantlepiece, not mine. Fast Car Magazine? serious, in depth feature? lol, thats like expecting TFTF4 to be realistically cast, acted and filmed Its entertainment. Just not my sort of fun. SS has a good point though. While its all very nice for everyone to be, well, nice about everything, it is possible to criticise constructivly, and I don't think we should be censored (either in fact, or by consensus) into only saying nice things. As a car builder, I look for questions and criticism, because they more often than not echo my own thoughts, and really help the process. As a car owner, I'm interested in what people actually think of my car, who isn't? Either way, you like it, yay!, you think its curse word, I don't care, its mine, not yours anyway but pointless slagging based on style rather than content, well. Its a very broad church, this car lark, but we all have the same god. A good car is a good car, regardless of style. I felt I had to speak up on the whats this van? thread the other day on those grounds, the guy was getting ragged for building a very creditable 70's kustom v8 out of a maestro van. how would you feel to find those kind of remarks about your car? anyway, I get the distinct feeling that I'm ranting, so I'll stop. Just use some common sense, and a bit of manners. that should do. Imagine that the builder of the car you are commenting on is watching and listening, cos this is the internet, and he might be................

All recent posts make very valid points, good posts! Just a note... I will be demanding scene points when everyone starts using Nu-Rat.

I'd never bought Fast Car mag in my life until I spotted on AOC (astraownersclub) that our very own AsRat was featured so sent my other half to pick me up a copy on the way home from work (much to his bemusement I think lol) I have a special soft spot for AsRat as I'm a mk3 astra person through and through. The car really honestly is about fun and the magazine didn't cover the car thoroughly enough tbh, the more you look the more you see and the smile widens to a grin and turns into a chuckle before you know it, it really is two fingers up at the modding and concours scene and a bit of light relief from the seriousness of car fanaticism. asrat looks in equal measures, horrid and ace, but it also makes me smile.
I think the key to rat is finding something that doesnt need to be faked, and astras are often in pre-rat states anyway (it seems), so they work quite well. All the silly add-ons just make it better
This may go against my former views on the car - i've mellowed with RR age!

The car really honestly is about fun and the magazine didn't cover the car thoroughly enough tbh This is true, but I think if they'd done a really in-depth feature they might have confused/alienated their regular readership a bit. I just think it's great that they covered it at all - lovely to see them branching out from what a lot of people see as being a cliched little niche - hopefully they'll be inspiring a fair few people to try something different and not to care quite so much about what other people think... ;D
