I used to mess around with these a bit.
Friction is the enemy. Make sure the piston chamber is well oiled where it mates to its mounting. Basically oil everything that moves....

yes - it ran for a bit - but only about 30 seconds, and then stopped, loads of pressure but little motion
i will let it cool down, then oil the moving parts, and try again

What are you fueling it with? I used to run mine with these little white blocks that were soaked in fuel, a bit like fire lighters i suppose.

Meths is the only true fuel for hardcore Mamod men. It's like a sharp line that divides us all, that between those who were born when meths was king and those who had to make do with kiddie blocks I have a couple of Mamods, the traction engine and the roller. Top toys!

oil everything (especially the piston bore and the face between the cylinder and the cylinder mounting block). Make sure that the crew that holds the cylinder to it's mounting block is tight enough to prevent steam escaping, but not so tight that it massively increases the friction.
Should help.

just picked up this Mamod stationary engine I have got one of these up in the loft got it as a young teenager - swapped a pack of club biscuits for it ;D It was missing whatever should be on the boiler end plate, I filled the hole with a rivet and a load of crudely applied solder. Worked well apart from the seized pressure release valve. I left it running un-attended one day and ran the boiler dry melting all my solder - still it freed off the seized valve nicely

I will get round to finishing it at some point

I've got a boxed version of the mamod steam car here - anybody want to make me an enticing cash offer so I can put some new bits on my new gearbox??
