Thought I'd move the retro plane thread from the PPC one to here.
It's an interesting sideline. Does a love of retro cars mean that you appreciate all things retro, (retro ships!!)
There's a company just outside my town (Cirencester) that restores old jets. They are called Hunter Jets (can you guess what they specialise in) so we see them flying over quite regularly.
The airfield there are based on (Kemble) does track days and filming too!
To continue the dirty talk...
Sabre, Lightning (ooh yeah baby), Phantom...

oh yeah, that's the good stuff!
One of the nice things about being a designer is sometimes gtting to work on books that co-incide with your interests. Late last year we did an I-Spy type book on planes so I was surrounded by hundreds of pics of planes from WW1 onwards. Shame no I-Spy retro cars!!

My sister lived there for about 6 months or so a good few years back.... needless to say, I went there almost EVERY weekend! haha!
I had my (first) Scirocco GTX, she had a Mk2 8v Golf and her Fella had a Mk1 1600GTi.....
;D Oh the fun!

Thanks to my place of work, despite my relatively young age I have had the pleasure (?) of working on many old and now defunct aircraft over the past ten years. These include: Hawker Hunter G.R. 9 (XE 601 for all you spotters out there!) Hawker Hunter T. mk7 D.H. Comet 4c (XS 235 'Canopus' was the last ever flying Comet) Bucaneer Phantom Harvard Beagle Basset HS 748 Andover BAC 1-11 Jaguar Hercules (K & J and even the unique W.MK.2 'Snoopy') Wessex Sea-King My favourite? Got to be the comet! www.escortupgrades.co.uk/Other%20Stuff/Canopus/index.htmI was her last full time engineer. Can now be seen (looking a bit less shiny) at Bruntingthorpe.

:oBelieve it or not they actually tested jet engines on Lancaster's and later Lincoln's (now were are talking dirty ! ).Some were attached to the outer wings where the Merlin would have been or in the ex-bomb bay with intake on the roof. I see from the pics that most of you enjoy the same era as i do when it comes to all things aviation.....50's,60's what a brilliant time for all things airbourne.

I love retro planes, but my tastes run a bit more retro. Something like this Tiget Moth for example, I would love to build a replica with a steel tube frame and run a Peugeot HDi diesel engine in it. I have heard that these have been certified for use in light aircraft, and they are a fantastic motor. Or this lovely Fokker Dreidecker like the Red Baron plane. And this is the greatest of them all, the Spitfire. I love the Westland Whirlwind. It is unusual in that the twin Rolls Royce Kestrels are controlled by the one throttle lever. This is the Hawker Tempest with the Napier Sabre engine. The last versions of this had MW50 boost and could outfly just about anything else around. Even Me262s were wary of them. This is one of my favourites, the rocket powered Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. They were dangerous to fly though, a very high casualty rate. This is the Lockheed Suuper Constellation. My late uncle was the most senior engineer at Qantas at the time of his retirement due to terminal cancer. When he started at Qantas these were the latest thing out. They would have to be my favourite piston powered airliner, with my favourite jet being the DeHaviland Comet.
