Been a while since we had pictures of parts/engines that have detonated themselves in a spectacular manner. Then I saw this : Anyone else put a rod through anything? Exploded a diff??

I don't have spectacular failures, not sure whether to be happy or dissapointed at that.

Managed to sieze the Midget engine, and was lucky to keep it in 'one piece' judging by oval big ends and slivers of bearings left.
Killed several diffs and halfshafts, but then Midget ones are made from cheese...
Did have a few trophy pieces but lost them moving house.

About 6 years ago we had a Fiat Ducato here at work, never off the road long enough to get serviced, and the guy who drove it never , ever checked it for oil, so finally a con rod let go at about 50mph, straight through the side of the block bringing part of the gearbox housing and stater motor with it ;D

my failures are allways a fail in that the broken stuff hangs together. Usually its welded together. I have a Moggie gear box, TH400, Cadillac V8 and sundry other stuff which has blown up in a fairly lacklustre way. MUST TRY HARDER

Blew a mk1 metro 1 litre to bits once. A con rod started to seize, I assume to the crank journal. The engine went slower and slower until *BANG* the engine suddenly sped up again to normal speed but was very unbalanced and running on 3 cylinders. The con rod had been thrown out though the side of the block, making a big hole. I went back and got the con rod. Ive still got it somewhere, bent like a horseshoe

No pics, but I changed down from 4th to 1st @ 60mph in a 1.3 Breadvan Polo. Bang. A few years later I went from 5th to 2nd in a brand new company Astra at 75. Bang. On a positive note, on the way home from Gaydon, I did most of the journey with my foot buried in the carpet, using all of the Lada's 7,800rpms and it's all fine, in fact runs better than ever now. I'll not reveal what my speedo was indicating for legal reasons. Completely separate story ... I heard about a 1.3, 4 speed Lada doing 100mph on the M40!!

I changed from 5th to 2nd at 70mph in the Polo. The needle went waaaaaaaaay off the clock but it survived fine! Definately blew out the cobwebs

I killed a Fiesta about 4years ago on the M1 out of Dublin at around 75mph - just overtook a fella then BANG and everything went dead................coast to an abrupt stop on the hardshoulder and call a lift!
When we got it home and took it apart it was the timing belt and all the valves were bent to bits. £300 Fiesta + fix = NEGATIVE

Take one tidy-ish mkII golf... Notice the low oil pressure warning light and knocking noises, but decide to carry on anyway, as the engine was due for replacement.... Fire a con-rod right through the block, smasing the externally mounted wate pump clean in half too... Strip it down to revel ths conrod floating about in the breeze.. Find this wedged into the cylinder head... Find the rod to be banana`d... remove the rest of the rods and pistons to find the remaining ones look like these... Leave car sitting for months.."ill fix it next week" untill it ends up having a few bitsstripped for sale, then getting cubed Make decorations for the home with broken engine bits.... candle-holder... Book ends.... I was going to polish them up but never got round to it.
