Yeah I was thinking mini, but FWD! And I'm allergic to FWD. I do like them though and I'm looking into them!
Beetles use loads of fuel I believe. The CRX again is FWD and Id definately get bored or use the FWD go cart like handling to snap a wishbone or something!

LPG is out of the question as its a high performance turbo engine mapped for super unleaded (even more money!)

I haven't had my '51 long enough to do the calculations. Either way, they're not juicy at all, providing everything's set up OK.

Beetles use loads of fuel I believe. I've got 40mpg from my twin carbed 1641 bug before. Sticking at 50mph on the motorway though (new engine). They ain't quick in standard form, but are a reasonably nice drive. Slightly interesting handling, especially at stock height. Normally you'll be able to get 30+mpg from a stock one, especially on longer journeys. They rust though, like all cars of the age. However, more of them have been bodged up so buy carefully.

Either way, they're not juicy at all, providing everything's set up OK. damn slow to use that amount of fuel though, fuel consumption is relative in my eyes, relative to performance or size or comfort, 30 mpg is easy to get out of a small car with a 90mph top speed so not impressive at all i don't think when i can get 30mpg out of my 200bhp cortina on extra low gearing. I wouldnt rely on LPG staying cheap for much longer either those who have suggested it, its "being re evaluated" by the government as we speak as its taxed less than bio fuel but isnt as green. I'd but something small, light and rwd, and then fit a modern engine in it, you'll get performance, economy and fun that way and it can be done on a budget if your carefull.

A-Series Metro. Everything a Mini is, but without the looks, high prices and it's more practical.

Yeah, I was going to say, £1000-1500 will get you a very average mini, prices have gone crazy since production stopped

Davey.........The grass always SEEMS greener....etc ...etc..I have thoughts about economy all the time, and also the general running costs for my Merc, also paranoid about where I park it ! So whats the point of owning it?!.I'm now at the point where I'm bored with it ,and cant even be bothered to get it out of the garage ,even tho' it is a 'go anywhere' type car that doesnt let me down. Seriously thinking about selling it ,and getting a cheapo thrash it to death type car,but I know I will lose shed loads of money on it !

I say if it makes you smile, then you have to keep it! Yeah, we could all get little cars that do great mpg and are cheap to run but we'd all be bloody miserable!! There is some good stuff out there, and I still think about getting another Metro Gta! No, not that retro, but good mpg, pretty nippy and I still think one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven! The big question is when is someone on here gonna make something electric? ?

LPG is out of the question as its a high performance turbo engine mapped for super unleaded (even more money!) It doesnt need to be....... Fit a Plate diff and get it mapped properly for midrange and to run on Normal unleaded, you`ll have more fun while using a lot less fuel as well A properly mapped 180/200sx is not thirsty, one that has had the boost increased with a bleed valve and a cheap remap to add fuel everywhere will drink loads Get it done properly, plate diff and sensible tyres wil see you enjoying it loads more HTH Dom

I remember years ago, reading the MRP rally Library book on the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. Apparently the team would transport some of their spare parts through the stages in the backs of specially perpared Avenger estates. These supply cars had beefier suspensions, rally wheels and tyres, Lotus heads, uprated gearboxes etc. If I were looking for another project, this sounds like alot of fun to re-create and it's RWD too.
