Looks so much better than when you first got it mate..
I have the exact same coilovers! Do you think if I was to put mine on but leave stock height until i pass I wouldn't endure as much bumping?
Personally I don't mind but I'm taking my driving test in my car and cant decide if I should put suspension in before or after... at stock height i don't have to worry about the speed bumps just need to worry about ride comfort at slow speeds around the curse word street of Folkestone where I'm taking my test.

Very tidy car you got there.
Think I agree with you, the bumpers made the biggest change, and look so much better. Wish my missus would get as stuck in with the motor. \she says she'll help then sits in the passenger seat and say "I'm bored, have you finished yet". I did get her to change the fuel regulator hoses on my Lanciatho as my big clumsy hands couldn't get in the tiny gaps between the hoses!

I really like the look of that, looks so clean and fresh! The reason it looks like a driver,I think anyway,is due to the fact you're running all early spec trim and late spec dooors Yeah, problem is, that's exactly how it should be. It's the last of the early spec small bumpers, before the big bumpers came in the year after. But it doesn't then have the cool red stripped rubber rubstrips the earlier, early, spec Golfs do. Only thing it needs really are red trimmed bumpers imho. Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

car looks good, low can you tell me more about the linseed oil - is it as simple as buying linseed oil and wiping it on? you boil it first? put it on hot/cold? looks like it transformmed the bumpers and I just bought SWMBO a 87 nova that has awful, faded gray bumpers.....would like to freshen them up, TIA!

Just noticed the replies Sorry for not responding sooner - thanks for the comments peeps. As for the linseed oil, just get a bottle of boiled linseed oil from Focus or somewhere similar. Meant for treating outside tables or decking but works wonders on dark plastic trim. Just rub it in. Easy! Have a look below for more examples of how awesome it is. Update isn't too major, but I've made progress with the cars styling. Swapped back to my old 5slat grill as I snapped up a 16v grill badge for a tenner (go for up to £40 on the Bay so quite pleased!). This pic makes me realise how badly I need to respray my grill metal strip. Also got a set of E30 BBS alloys for £50 as a home refurb project - never refurbed wheels before so would be a learning process for me and something to do on a boring evening. Ford Focus boot proves to be exactly the same width as four 7J alloys: Got the tyres pulled off and binned them. Look manky, cos they are! Nothing some vigorous sanding won't sort though: Want them to look like this: First rim was really grotty and paint was very bubbly and soft... After some Nitromors and some wet and dry I ended up with really smooth rims/lips: Just got another three to do and then I can prep them for paint! Bought a Megs machine polisher and spent all day polishing up the car... But after all the work the end product was pretty meh. A look on Youtube and I realised I'd done it completely wrong - no where near long enough spent on it. I'll have another go in a couple of weeks. It looked alright, but I'd had it look better from polishing by hand in half the time. Ho hum, you live and learn! My red trimmed bumpers arrive and they looked curse word. Both were sprayed with what looked like white house paint from someone using a roller nearby. Very disappointed after a totally different eBay description - the seller refunded me half the amount I paid, so I set about seeing what I could do with them. Paint specks covered each bumper from end to end: Started with the front bumper. Bought a pack of cotton pads and some nail polish remover from Tesco. Painstakingly went from one end to the other to clean off the paint, then washed it down with a heavy mix of Autoglym carbody shampoo/conditioner to get the muck off. Followed up with a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil: Really pleased with the result. That picture has the front and back bumpers side by side. What a difference eh? It even darkens the red trim. Unfortunately the rear bumper is a write off. It looks like it's been reversed into something fairly hard as the bumper iron had a bulge in it, and the skin a fairly deep crease. So I binned the bumper but pulled off the red strip. Whipped off the black strip from my current rear bumper and fitted the red one in it's place: The bumper needs a clean and oil really, but couldn't be arsed... Stuck on the front bumper: Really like this picture: Such a small detail, but after a year of looking I've finally got the bumpers I wanted! Really breaks up the black trim and just gives it that extra little touch. Love it. Cheers!

Hey thanks. Needs some attention to the paintwork, but with a polish and fettle looks really good for it's age.

Wow I've not updated this thread in ages... lurking FTW! Plenty has happened to the car since my last update. First thing was I won a set of 15" Borbet A wheels off eBay - ironic that I sold the set that came on the car cos I didn't like them... and then ended up buying another set. I got them very cheap and had them refurbed in anthracite/charcoal grey and some 175/50 rubber put on. Then I swapped the badged grill for a badgless number, and ditched the deeper 16v front splitter and put on a CL (?) splitter - I could then go lower at the front and still miss most speed bumps (somehow!). I get bored quickly of how my car looks, so grills and splitters are interchangeable to me - don't prefer any one look tbh. Next up I polybushed the rear beam (the old bushes were like shredded wheat). The disaster struck in September, the clutch went for the second time in 6 months. So driveway clutch change in the dark and rain! Which ended up not working anyway due to not spotting damage to the replacement. jolly pain in the backside. Got some flat caps for the wheels after that, which I love the look of! Not much happened to the car in the Autumn as I bought one of these: A 2litre 16v ABF engine from a Seat Ibiza Cupra So the months up to Christmas were spent stripping it down, selling the bits off, and getting it ready to drop in the Golf. Gave it a good clean, and painted it black: The plan had been to drop it on the driveway, but the weather and bodged clutch episode put paid to that so paid a mate with a unit and ramps, to do it for me Old engine out and bay cleaned up Rocker cover painted and detailed ABF engine installed and looking canny good! The wiring has been neatened up, and the aircon has been removed (badly installed in 1989 and generally a pain). Also retained all the Seat Ibiza pumps and alternator for a neater, more modern install. Car is a real beast with new lump in. Loads of torque and will pull and pull right up to some quite silly speeds Had to sort out a load of niggles - timing, mixtures, and the coil decided to burst - I think as a result of being heated and cooled quite extremely in the recent cold weather (and it was cheapo pattern part) so replaced that with a Bosch coil and a new battery just in case (again Bosch). Plans? Recaro seats and generally tidy it up. Hoping to get it blown over in the spring.

How are your coilovers holding up? We've had a set of them on our Mk2 since May and they seem fine so far. Only complaint for me is that over cobbled roads in France they squeaked like an old bed How long does the Linseed oil last between applications?

FIne so far, although the rears do creak quite loudly if your reversing over bumps etc Linseed last ages. Months and months, and even then it never ever fades completely back.
