Just got home from a day at the Modified Nationals show at Newark showground, was'nt one of the best shows i've been to but was some interesting cars there. Its mainly a show for the 'M*x P*w*r' boys, all Saxo's, Corsa's etc, but there was a few retro's there, and this interesting 100E. now, most of you should know that these cars are rear wheel drive, this one wasnt.... it had an A series engine fittted driving the front wheels and sounded quite sweet. Will post the other retro stuff shortly.

Seems like a pretty pointless conversion to me, converting it to front wheel drive using what looks like a metro subframe and shoving an A series in it. I'd have just shoved a bigger engine in and beefed up the drive train, I know it's been done to death but it makes more sense

I have to say I don't really see why either. It is a tidy car, I'll give it that, I like the shape of 100Es, although the wheels and blue indicators do nothing for me, but that car's designed for RWD, and there are a number of choices for modding it as it is, I mean I've seen all sorts of RWD engine conversions in 100Es before, from Pintos to Cosworths and Ford 302 V8s, and I'm sure even a 2 litre Pinto with a RWD Escort gearbox would suit the car better than an A Series. Each to their own and all that, but I'd imagine that it just won't have the character a 100E does.

It'd really fly no doubt! It'd have to be a RWD car still though I reckon, I wonder if the ubiquitous Ford Type 9 would match up to it? It would sort of take away the all Ford element to it though, I reckon a Zetec powered one with a Sierra gearbox has a certain charm to it, because it's using all Ford components, if you see what I mean.

Yeah but i'm guessing that most of the Ford routes have been done before, the Red-Top would just be a bit different.

Please excuse my compleat and utter ignorance but what the heck is the difference between the early Anglia 100e, late Popular and late Prefect? Is it just me or are they all nearly exactly the same?

Anglia is the model name like Sierra or Escort, 100E is also part of the Model name and also indicates like Mk if you will of the car. Popular and Prefect are specs are I think with the Prefect being the higher. Think thats right. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Anglia's and Pop's had sidevalve engines that were a throwback to pre-war engineering and had previously featured in the "sit-up-and-beg" style popular.
IIRC, Prefects had the OHV engine that later went on to be used in 105E Anglia's.
Anglia's & Pop's had two doors, with Popular being the lowest spec level. Pefeects had 4 doors and (relative) poshness.
The sidevalve ones are pure comedy as (a) they top out at about 50mph (b) you can slow them down quicker by opening the door and using your foot on the road as a brake, (c) the vacuum operated wipers are a work of genius: uphill in the rain and they basically stop working.

Just signed up after my sunbeam-driving buddy pointed this out to me Some nice touches , such as the door handles and the flared front wings. Certainly looks well-executed but going to those lengths to convert it to fwd is beyond me. a similar amount of work and he could have fitted a rover v8 in it this is my work-in-progress, also has electric wipers lol. Its an ex-drag car that I'm going to strip and rebuild properly. Basic planned spec is 3.5 rover v8, with rajay turbocharger and jag IRS. just finishing off an mgb gt v8 resto and we'll be onto this project. nothing leaves the workshop without a v8 in it. I imagine that mini engine is putting out a tad over 100bhp, and the 100e weighs next to nothing, so its probably quite nippy. Of course there could be another A Series engine in the boot!

My feelings for what they're worth is it's a complete waste of time. If it was mine I'd 2.8 or 2.9 V6 it to keep the Ford heritage and also get a decent noise out of it.
