OK Headlights now work again, dodgy earth wire. Cleaned out fuel filter and pump, still broke down. Replaced carburettor, still broke down, only further away this time. Think I need to flush the fuel tank and start from scratch

Maybe its suffering from Rootes fuel tank syndrome? If there's a load of the paint/coating they used floating around inside the tank it could be clogging the pick up though when mine did that there was always enough flow for it to idle but not run under load.
Also I would personally stick with traditional points ignition when trying to trace a fault like this.

That's exactly what it's doing. The electronic ignition has made an amazing difference to the way it runs. I just need to start from scratch, flush the tank and make the git work properly

Poor old thing still doesn't run right, not had a chance to flush the tank yet. But I did fit this, which pleased me greatly ;D

Dropped the fuel tank out today. 2 bolts, 2 nuts, 2 pipes and a wire was all it took Rinsed the tank out and flushed the fuel lines out. Loads of gunk came out of the lines, and the fuel that came out of the tank had it's fair share of gunge too Cleaned the tank up, gave it some paint and popped it back in So. Took it for a drive round my usual test route. Didn't brake down once ;D

Good news!
That looks just like the Rootes 'black death' gunge I had. You've got a fuel filter somewhere haven't you? Keep an eye on it in case more of it loosens off and makes its way though.

It's odd really The inside of the tank was completely bare metal. The fuel line was completely blocked up, the floor was covered in curse word after I blew it through

I've come to the conclusion that it's rust from the filler neck that's been causing my problems. Have to see if new ones are available, as it's detatchable. Failing that, clean it up as best I can

Had a low rev misfire, traced it to a loose sensor on the distributor. That's what happens when you do up screws with a pen knife. Since then, I've just been using any excuse to drive it ;D

It's probably wrong that I love the way this looks right now, takes me right back to being a little kid again. When I was a kid in the 80s I was always impressed by the fuel filler below the boot slam panel. Thought that was mega cool.

It just needs to be a little lower at the front. There's loads of little details that make the avenger cool. the fuel filler, the rear lights, the strip speedo, that fact that it had a 4 lin rear end when ford were still using leaf springs etc etc I love it. Went for a little drive tonight, just because I can

Stripped the dash out, to get to the heater matrix because I thought it was leaking. When I first got the car, a pool of green fluid appeared in the drivers footwell. Got the flipping thing out, and there's nothing wrong with it Then it got too dark to put it all back together. BUMHATS!

If you still have the dash out, just check the wipewasher axle rubbers. It tends to crack and leak when raining hard. It has been leaking in mine since ever. Maybe you can put there some silicone sealing.
