J i'd heard that about G13bs, never been able to find anything though.
Dom, what makes the 1.6 more tuneable?
have thought about bike engines as i know where i can get one relatively cheap, but its putting it in that will cause too much problems, plus not enough torque really.
are there any fwd boxes for rotary engines?

peugeot/citroen TU(? ADAM!) as in saxo vtr and pug 106 rallye. vts' (16v) are fast (very) but seem quite fragile, might be because many are owned by planks who rev the tits off them with no oil/water tho. that would be a nice interesting swap. if you can find one, march super turbo micra engine really light? try a wartburg 3 cylinder on a trabant box 200bhp? no way, but if I ever get there I'll let you know

take the 2.0 duratec, its an unburstable 200,000 mile engine you can bung in without faffing about tuning up before it will make any power, ask an AA man how many Mondeos he's been out to for engine faults, loads of potential power with Cosworth concentrating on them now, aint no substitute for cubes, tuned up whizzy motors are fun for a bit but they just don't make great road cars for daily use. just drop it all out the front of the mondeo, shorten the driveshafts and start squeezing it in the fiesta.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Normal TU engines aren't all alloy (just the head) but the 1.3 from an s1 106 rallye is. 105bhp from a 1.3, reasonably light (I'm no weightlifter at 10 stone wet through and can carry one complete with inlet and alternator across the garage without damaging myself) they're also quite cheap, looking at about £200-£250 for a decent one including the ecu, and they wire in simple enough. People like me take them out to put VTS engines in

I'd go rotary, Mazda 12a would fit the bill. There tiny, and for retrofit transplant purposes you can tax em on there actual capacity - 1146cc There pretty damn cheap as well, £200 would see you with a complete one with a 5-speed hung behind it... +1! You can get 200 out of it too n/a with the right mods and it'll sound mental as hell.

Polo G40 motor. 113bhp stock, 150bhp is easily done through supercharger tweaking, exhaust, inlet mods and chip. Pretty freakin' light, i was easily chucking one around onto a trolley and stuff. 1272cc so cheap tax. Not much in the way of fancy ECUs to have to wire in.

great thread, I'm real tempted by a zetec se myself tax busting one For The Save, duratec might be in the running too, judging by what Mr Toaster sez. Bike engine would be wicked too if long distances are not required!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I don't care what anyone says, rotary engines are not light, everything is cast iron, even the rotors! I had terrible trouble trying to move a 13b, couldent even drag it across a garage floor I'm still all for the G13b

Oh and bikes engines are great, but the gearboxes are really not very strong, and they hate the shock loading that you get in a car ( no gearbox oil remember, just the thin stuff in the engine)

go with the g13b - light and revvy and quite small size wise - lots of goodies available over the pond
check out this berg cup swift:
106gti/VTS engine should not be overlooked

G13b, 230bhp on TB's 400+ with a turbocharger!! All ally, easily available, and spares are easy to get hold of. J 230bhp from a G13B on throttle bodies - not a chance. 130 bhp maybe. They are great engines though.
