Hi, am new here just registered today, however i have been browsing for a few months, great website. some really cool cars, and you seem a good bunch.
Anyways....... I am looking to get on the Retro bandwagon, i currently have a 106 which is going to fail its MOT in a month and its not worth bothering with. So i am 19 and have a grand. must be able to insure due to age and must be usable, not a rolling wreck as funds are limited (poor student).
I have ideas of things i like but cant be to piccy with my budget!? (volkswagens)
Can i get anything or am dreaming?
Pics, links, what you got? I am in the northwest (cheshire) if anyone has anything.
Thanks for the help.

mk1 Fiat punto 1.2 16-Valve as these are very nippy, but the insurance is cheap you should get a good one for around £600-£800.

It depends on what level of mechanical proficiency you maintain.. If you can weld thats a massive bonus and opens up the choices alot!
Mini's would be the obvious choice...

Mk2 Fiesta is my top tip right now... Cheap to buy, can be tuned really well.. all the same mods that work on Golfs work on them,.. looks better than a Mk1 (IMHO)... jobs a goodun

I suggest Mk1 Astra, Mazda 323, Mk1/2 Fiesta, Polo, Facel Vega*, Golf or Jetta. All simple to look after, just depends what you're looking for in a car, fwd, rwd, coupe, dub, Ford Plenty of tin, you just have to search it out. * yes, I'm joking...

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I do like the Fiesta idea, mate had a mk1 before it disintegrated. Wasnt aware you get get a half decent dolomite for that price either. Mk1 astras. again a cool car I didnt think of.
Is there any 19 year olds on here, what do you have and how do you find insurance. Oh, I am also on my dads insurance and he's got like 30+ years no claims if that helps.
Also I heard you cant get on classic insurance unless your 21?

Rust is an issue with many retros - but I'd echo the Fezza ideas. The Mk2 is particularly unloved at the moment and a non-XR2 should be easy to find for pennies. My first motor was a Mk2 - they can take a lot of punishment!

I know that there seems to be a bit of a bandwagon going on here for Mk2 Polos at the minute, but i really don't think you can go wrong with them. They made them up to a G plate (there are even a few around on an H) they are cheap to buy, cheap to run, easy to work on etc etc. other than teh first ones, rust isnt too bad on them (although if you buy one, check under the battery - they seem to go here and then p!ss water into teh drivers footwell when it rains!) There are plenty of them in scrap yards to cannibalise, only real weak point is that the standard carbs are curse word
I had one as my first car with the 1.3 engine, and they are pretty nippy too. Insurance is a little more than the equivalent fiesta or similar (VWs always seem to be alittle bit more to insure) but not horrendous, or at least it wasnt when I was driving mine anyway. From memory it was about £550 a year when I was 19 (although that was 6 years ago now!)

Always wanted a Euro style Panda never got round to it. Could be done for less than £500, if you hunted around. In the Al Italia colours for the finishing touch.

Oh, I am also on my dads insurance and he's got like 30+ years no claims if that helps. Also I heard you cant get on classic insurance unless your 21? When I was 19 (22 now, seems like a while ago lol!) I had the valencia (green/blue) 1500 pictured above. It was originally a FWD (tax exempt) but had the Sprint 2.0 16 valve powertrain, gearbox, rear axle amongst other things. Insurance was 600 quid TPFT through Adrian Flux, all mods declared including full UK & Euro breakdown cover. Does vary phenomenally depending on your situation though. This was a 'standard' policy, not classic or confined in any way. If you haven't got any NCB of your own it'll be expensive regardless of what you look at but worth ringing around to get some basic quotes. I always steered clear of 'classic' insurance because it typically doesn't accrue any NCB which is a real killer when your young, as if you ever go back to 'normal' insurance you can still get stung (although to a lesser extent). You can get classic policies at your age though 1K or thereabouts will get you a clean, great condition 1300/1500/1850HL or an equivalent Toledo, if you prefer the shorter tail and square lamps. Good parts supply too, great economy, go well, lovely to drive and loads of tuning parts and modifications availiable Great active owners club too!

Peugeot 205 FTW in my opinion.. Lots of choice of engine/trim, all the GTI bits bolt on, galvanished shell so no rot.. Not that I'm biased of course..

Wow, thanks for all the ideas so far, my heads buzzing with ideas. Somone said nova- Id love one, i think the chavs have finished with them now and their cool again. loving the brown saloon in the readers rides. I know rust is common with most retro stuff but arnt Nova's paritcually bad for rot. I am now thinking, fezza, nova, polo, golf mk2, 205 (205 rallye if they wernt so expensive) . But i am keeping my ideas open....

I'd recommend a Mk2/3 Polo, nippy if you get anything over the 1.0, unlimited modding potential and still a few around that are un-scene taxed.
