I will be visiting Berlin later this year early next year, and have just found out that Berlin has an enviromental protection zone. And that cars must display a coloured disc based on its emissions.Does this apply to foreign visitors aswell?I will be driving either a 1985 Mini Mayfair 998cc or a 1997 Mini Cooper 1275cc with Catalyst.Would these 2 cars be aloud into the City?
Thanks in advance.

As I live in Hamburg and we don´t have this utter ***, I didn´t looked into this topic too much. But I can help you out with the right link to educate your self: umwelt-plakette.de/int_england.php?SID=fb3299rb1ub4r6phqr3jnt68n7Two things are for sure - you´ll need a badge as foreigner as well - and the 1985 Mini won´t get one. The Catalyst Car should be able to get a badge easily. Enjoy your trip

I wouldn´t worry about it too much mate.
Build your Mini and go to Berlin in it.
You only get a fine anyway and as you´re not German i can´t see them posting it home to you.

See? Told ya. All the big metros are studying the fools who instituted this congestion/pollution farce in London. It's merely another way to impair mobility for the common bloke. Rich folks who get new cars every year, no problem. The great unwashed masses need not apply.

A friend runs a mustard yellow Volvo 145 express on Norwegian plates, she lives in the mitte area of Berlin, and the car is parked on the street. No problems reported other than a broken window due to a drunken man on a bicycle Go for it, a am looking at Berlin as a possibility to take my masters in a year my self. Love the city. (as a tourist that is, never been there more than a week or so) Pleas report "home" about your stay, and good luck.

Just got a press release on this. There's a forty Euro fine apparently - doesn't say whether it's on the spot or not though. It does include ANY car, no matter where registered though.
It's absolutely shocking. These "environmental" revenue generating schemes really do need to stop. Somehow, I think they won't but all it does is make me less likely to visit these places.

Meh, I'd risk it for the sake of a thirty quid fine TBH. Just play dumb if you get stopped. That's what I'd do. I agree with the sentiments of the above - taxing people under the paper-thin guise of saving the environment is pretty sickening.

lord: it is not official ;D it's just not the 40 Euros, you also collect "points" on your licence... i'd go for it anyway, can't imagine, anyone cares with foreign plates... as the british registration documents are totally different, than the german ones, i can't also see anyone giving you such a sticker... i am working at a dealership and we issue them each day, but nobody can explain to me, how to handle the foreign cars... i have two cars, that don't get that sticker, but i just don't drive in the big cities... also, only some bigger cities have areas, that you need this sticker for, i am sure, large areas in Berlin don't need this sticker.... it is just another stupid european invention, and they wonder, why the irish vote against it....

There is NO SYSTEM TO PURSUE TRAFFIC OFFENSES INTERNATIONALLY IN EUROPE. Fact.
You can get caught speeding or on dangerous tyres etc etc in england or france or germany or italy and they can try and fine you on the spot. Just tell them to take it to court....no country will ever pay for the legal expenses of requesting an extradition over a traffic offense.

lol, if you are stopped on the spot in France for speeding, you pay on the spot, or if you cant pay, you are escorted to a cash machine / bank to get the money to pay. No money = time in the cells. Ask me how I know that You cant get points on a UK licence for an offence in europe, that much is true, although if the offence is serious enough, you will find yourself facing arrest and court proceedings. Minor speeding offences etc will never get that far, but breaking the limit by a large amount will do it, as will the serious stuff like drunk driving etc. I cant speak for germany, I believe its the same as here in France, but not 100% sure - radar warning devices like gatso info pre-loaded on a gps IS legal, but actual detectors like snoopers are seriously forbidden - the police have detector detectors, and ifcaught, it will be confiscated as a minimum, and at worst you may find your car impounded too. Any kind of jammer will land you straight in a cell. Watch out in Germany, I beleieve their tyre minimum tread depth is deeper than UK, so if your tyres are close to the limit but still legal here, they may well be illegal in Germany. In FRance from July 1st, cars must carry a warning triangle and 2 hi-viz vests. The triangle was recommended before anyway, but it along with the vests will now be compulsory.

I would pay to see a police officer try and fine / arrest someone because they havnt got a triange and vis vests They will come out with: "if your walking, even if its inside your house you need to wear a vis vest so people can see you........"

Believe that in Spain, you need to have a hi-vis for everyone in the car - and it mustn't be in the boot. Haven't looked too closely as I'm yet to drive to Spain. One day...

Er, nope. That's what I heard. They must be in the main area of the car so you can put them on before getting out.
We're ok here. We have the Highways Agency people to help! Woo-hoo </sarcasm mode>

Consensus seems to be to not worry about it.
Did find out during a spot of research that in 2006, Transport for London had collared only a tiny proportion of foreign drivers for the Congestion Charge. Something like £1000 out of a million or so just for French drivers! The system doesn't seem very efficient.
