Go on then, tell me about the car you always said you would never, ever own as long as you had a hole in your 4rs3, until you drove one for a while or had short term care of it. For me it has to be one of these. Always thought they were the preserve of the myopic-geriatric-indicator-leaving-on-motorcyclist-knocker-offer but after my first decent drive I was hooked. Ultra smooth to drive (especially the autos), reasonable on fuel, big, safe and very comfortable I love them now... So, what was the one that surprised you?

I'm so sorry.... Hired one last year and drove 350 miles from Essex to Newcastle, then back the next day. Have to say, it was faultless. Also I thought these were curse word til I owned one...

Saxo (sorry its not retro) :$ (not that particular one) Always wondered why chavskis drove them, and thought they were fast, embarrassing themselves. However I had a povo spec 1.1 for a little while, and it was honestly like driving a go-kart, great fun little hot-hatch. Same with most boy racer cars I guess..mk1 Saxos will be flooding RR in 10 years with people with fond memories. Wouldn't have another one though. After 3 months I had no first or second gear, had replaced the clutch cable, the valve cover gasket, the head gasket needed doing, the exhaust was held on from the down pipe with rope/a dog lead, it cut out when you turned left or went up a hill, it got stuck at 3,000rpm for no reason quite often.. and it was using a litre of oil a week. Fun when they work though.

I am so sorry for this and if it comes down to it I'll deny it with my life but I used to have one of these and around town that little 1.2 was the don, I actually miss it quite a bit!!

Mk3 Fiesta... Had this one for a few months, and it's bloody great! It helps that this one has the 1.6 engine and is mintier than a Fox's Glacier Mint. I'll be sorry to see it go, but I needs the funds to plough into the Benzo.

My uncle had one of these as his daily runabout for a few months.......I took to it quite a bit as well, liked smoking about in it with him. Seemed quite comfortable, was white as well. Couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding though ;D - even once we'd replaced the head gasket

These were cars for morons, as far as I was concerned, featuring no style, a propensity to rust and archaic engines. Everything was better than an Escort. A 205 or Golf would kick it's bottom in a handling contest every day of the week, an Astra was far more refined. Even taking the bus would have been marginally less embarassing. However when my Astra Mk2 dropped the contents of it's sump over the M1, I was stuck between a rock & a hard place, with no cash to buy anything decent. My brother's XR3-alike had just failed it's MoT though and he had been donated my father's 205 on long-term loan. So I coughed the £150 to fix the escort and had it myself, on the promise I paid him £150 for the actual car the next month. Proved to be quite a handy tool in the end, went everywhere without fuss. Yes it sounded like a bag of nails in a spin dryer and had zero street cred, but survived several thousand miles of abuse including regular rush-hour trips into the smoke. Never gave a minutes trouble. Also a very comfortable car to drive, everything was 'just right', unlike their later efforts!! In the end I succumbed to the shiney, I was offered a Mk3 Astra at a stupidly cheap price and I gave the Escort to my brother-in-law who had a few months 'happy barrying' out of it: 9inch high TURBOSYSTEMS sticker, a 4in exhaust and an astmatic 1300 engine are somewhat incongrous.

Yea, forgot about the shatizz! We had a hire one once and was quite a good laugh. Sounded like half a slightly tinny flat 6! Or maybe that was just the alcohol...... (nb - I wasn't driving at the time!)

I ran a Matiz round Crete for 2 weeks once. 900cc sowing machine, keeps up with traffic, survived an excursion into an olive grove when ran off the road by a pick-up truck, hand brakes luuurvly down through the switchbacks, and most importantly had ice cold AC within seconds of start up. Oh, and 5 doors, which seems quite unlikely.
I really quite enjoyed driving it. I'd hate to see what kinetic energy would do to it if in a serious scrape though...

Erm.... This is a hoot to drive. Or at least it was until my wife made it too embarrassingly pink and girly for me to drive!

Ooohhh err Missus... Had a weekend away with two mates, one of whom announced he'd drive and take his Mrs car.... this thing (alright, not exactly this, an older one). Three not-so-small blokes, three overnight bags, a huge pile of photography gear, food, water and other odds were wedged in and off we went. It was quiet, couldn't hear the engine, not exactly fast but would bumble along with the other traffic, fairly roomy and after 450 miles had returned 51mpg. The only real let-down was the big pink kiss on the tailgate....... TBH, it went OK once you gave it some beans and got used to the lack of initial ooommph (Chesterfield to Peterborough was a blast down the A1!). Certainly gave me a surprise.

Mk1 MR2. First time I drove one was a completely standard one on track, and I was amazed at how good it was.

When the hearse went pop in Ireland I ended up in a hire car, a Nissan Note no less, and diesel to put, but I had to concede it was actually quite a good little car. Far superior to the new punto I had(which I'd always liked the look of) when I got back to the mainland!

I really hated Sierras back in the day. One day I went to look at a Mk3 Granada that was advertised for sale as a 2.0 (didn't want a 2.8 for economy reasons). Got to the dealers and it turned out to be a 2.8 so I didn't buy it. However, parked next to it was one of these, same colour but with the original 7 spoke RS alloys. Oooh, shiny, I like shiny. So, it's a Sierra, which I hate, it's a 2.8 V6 which I can't afford to run, and it's white which I can't keep clean. So I take it for a test drive and buy it! One day I'll have another (maybe the next one won't be a complete dog like the last one, still did 10000 miles in 3 months in it and it was brilliant, shame about the fact it had a shorter wheelbase one side than the other!)

I absolutley hated them untill i started working on them then i got used to them. It was only when i had a go in a 16V that i actually started to seriously like them. At first i hated them, then i came here and started to like them. After being here a while i decieded to use the engine from one in my cortina, so after buying one and driving it i decieded i loved them and would have one at the drop of a hat.

*Good call on the BX. Can't believe how much I utterly despised the 'pointless French tat' until I got my first one, a 1.7 n/a diesel. Absolutely brilliant car.

Preserve of the myopic-geriatric-indicator-leaving-on-motorcyclist-knocker-offer LOL! ;D I have to say, I've driven a Ka, and to be fair, they're actually really friendly little cars, quite nippy, and handle quite well too. I also had to admit a while back that the Mk1 Punto wasn't actually a bad car either, even though I initially hated them. I had one as a renter for a little bit and got to quite like it! it was in that funky metallic orange colour aswell, looked quite fresh! In fact, it looked much like this one: However, absolutely nothing like this one: Cheddar! ;D
