And.......! You can car share with a mate on speed events. (sprints / hillclimbs) Need to pay two entry fees, however running costs can be shared.

sorry to thread jack, but i am also looking at doing sprints and hill climbs in the SS1, infact, thats the very reason i put it on the road and am 'shakeing it down' and ironing out the faults at the moment. a few quick quiries i have though: 1. you say you need a national B non-race license; how hard to get is this?
2. the car is running twin weber 40dcnfs, stage 3 big valve head, lumpy cam etc, as well as poly bushes, vented discs, the battery in the boot, and is soon to have harness's, bucket seats, non-standard wheels, and avos all round - will this put me in a stupid class? or is there somthing i can fit into and be competitive?
can anyone recomend any good websites that i can get info and regs from?

Start with www.gurstondown.org, it's got loads of info and some links. then go on to the MSA website at www.msauk.org/ and get the rest of the info. There's some info at one of my club's at www.woolbridge.homecall.co.uk/starter%20hillclimb%20class.htmGenerally they'll slot you in whatever class they can but with my engine size I'm going always to be in Formula Libre with some vehicles with very exotic backgrounds. My plan is to do the 15th July training at Gurston so how about a few other Retro Rides entries?

Eh? Don't you lot have parking lot gymkhanas over there? We call them autocrosses. No cage, no fuel cells, no race tires, just a helmet, good condition tires, battery secured, and they'll wedge you into a class for anything street-licensed. For the trailer set, formula cars and full-tilt racing sedans are also classified, with extravagant mods. Here's a couple links explaining the sport, which is the least expensive way to carve corners in organized competitions: sccaforums.com/programs/autocross/faq.aspx#102en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AutocrossYes,.. yes we do,.. which is why I made sure I added "speed based" motorsport .. then added the corners thing because arguably drag racing is cheaper to get started in than hillclimbing. Autocross is a Great and cost effective way to do a motorsport though. Thats for sure. Dave, what you meaning by "speed based"? I may have this wrong, but hillclimbs are one car at a go and timed runs over the stage, yes? Same as an extended orange cone autocross except the hillclimb is through the streets, up and down, along the rockwalls, and around trees and people, ain't it? Both are speed based, yes? no?

Both are timed for sure... I think actually we may have our wires crossed, or not. I'm thinking of autotest, so a test of car control and accuracy against the clock. The autocross you are talking about may well be the equivilent in the UK to sprints. Which we tend to lump together with hillclimbs anyway, as 'speed events'. A drag race is effectively a very straight sprint I know the Berg cup cars can often be found competing in slalom runs and the like in Europe, but I've not seen so many of those kind of events being run outside of Autotests in the UK. Anyone know more about this side of motorsport in the UK.

Get your ARDS, buy a car and go for it. Be prepared for serious cost!

Aye, the parking lot gymkarna as you put it - is available here, and there are some quite specialist cars built for it (cut down minis and the like) but they don't so much get up to any speed, in fact I 'd be surprised if they get out of 1st gear,,, it looks really good fun and I always fancied having a go but there never seems to be anywhere doing it local to me. And as I'm pretty much central in the UK you'd think there'd be stuff but I never seem to be able to find any.
There used to be what they called "Streetkarna" at Gary's Picninc and the like - always fun to see the big ol muscle cars teararsing around the cones!

The local Motorsport club to me do Autotests and 12 car rallies. I keep meaning to join up and see what the passat can do in a carpark full of cones. Crash probably, I think it'll be good for the 12 car stuff, I just need a codriver/map reader as the Mrs point blank refuses to do it with me for fear of death by passat meeting tree.

What about trying an autosolo? It is a "new" form of motor sport to the UK but is akin to autocross in other countries. You can read about AUTOSOLOS HERE (CLICKY). (Scroll down about 1/3 of the way down the page.) They are fun, cheap, you get to try marshalling as well as competetive driving and they are accessible too. I want to get into hillclimbs and sprints, as well as autosolos and 12-car rallies, in the Chamois. But I've got to get the car back on the road first! Soon, though... There is a lot of good information out there and if you go along to some events, you will find the vast majority of competitors very friendly. I have chatted to loads myself and got some really useful snippets of information. "I'm"

Hillclimbing licence easy to obtain. Race licence will involve an ARDS test at a race school circuit. Used to be about £200 for the full days course. You are not guaranteed to pass as lots fail on the written test, plus if you accidently leave the tarmac you'll fail. Need to apply again for my race licence again which is always more expensive due to needing a medical every year. This time i need a "rolling road test" at the hospital.

Frank that deffinately sounds like a good idea, i'll be fairly free in july as well so will probably get myself booked in. I'm guessing it's a 'rwyb' type affair? If so might be a good first airing for the 900. I do it. Click the link in my signature for my blog which covers my past year in Racing Saloons - pre-1994 touring car championship. Charlie I'll have a read through that, hopefully there's some prep stuff in there as that's the main thing that's going through my head. Already having a look around for a 318i for th pbwmc so as soon as i get that i'll get the prep under way and hopefully get some trackdays in this year to get used to the car.

Yeah i'm already on it, absolutely hooked on the pbmwc idea. Are you running at rockingham? As i am hopefully coming up for the 7th at rockingham to hopefully pester a couple of the drivers and have a look at their cars and get a feel for the racing.
On another note - dude awesome blog on teh sierra! Didn't get to go through it when you first put it up but am reading it from start to finish. Excellent set of links for equipment and some good advice on the ARDS test in particular (like getting to the track before for some runs).

Yeah, I see from your location that Brands is one of your local tracks. A great place to do the ARDS. I'll be at Rockingham on the 7th and at Brands on the 14th. Call me when you arrive and I'll introduce you to some of the high end and not so high end BMWs. You can have a look round my car for an introduction to the raggedy end of the quality spectrum.
