I kinda fancied the whole "carry on camping" thing. You know, yellow pullover, mustard coloured Austin Maxi, cheesy sountrack and slidewhistle sound effects when I accidentally flash Gladys in the next van.... Paying £120 a week plus the petrol to drag it about makes me a little less inclined. Looking for cheap and easy holidaying really as have a 1 year old means no more long haul flights really. Before my car carked it and my pay rise was almost non existent, we where looking at place in the North of France, found one that was a 2 bed house, 30km from Boulogne and was only £230 for the week, factor in £50 for the return ferry to and from calais and cheap holidays ahoy, also not too far to drive with the wee bairn! Did not fancy it with my 3 year old boy and my one year old daughter. Actually worked out cheaper than a week in a static caravan in Skeg! Rysz.

I'm currently looking for a Combi Camp trailer tent, as they are light and hella easy to erect, a caravan would be great, but its the storage of it that is the issue, and the weight, I personally would make do with a Decathlon 'Quecha' pop up 2 man tent, they are brilliant, its just I have a family etc now and the missus doesnt do drinking until she drops and to hell with comfort, like I do.
I get what youre saying though, a retro van hauled by a decent old motor would look great, and I think would be acceptable, unlike a modern car pulling a modern caravan, which seems to have the image attatched to it.

Can you rent one to see if you like it before splash the cash on one? My parents had one way back when, they would stay in that, but I prefered to check into a hotel.

having grown up with caravanning holidays they can be alot of fun. I found ironically enough that they are best to have when its raining because although it may be poor weather there is enough to do inside in the warm and laughing at those in tents is good enough for me!!! Seriously though ive never holidayed abroad much as my dad is self employed so cant take loads of time off and never had loads of money so with 4 kids its by far the most cost effective way to holiday. Ive seen the best places in england you certainly learn to appreciate your own country's beauty that way

A couple of us bought a 16ft Silouhette two berth with end kitchen and bathroom... £300. We used it for three years, car shows, beach trips, beer festivals, fancy dress parties, pub crawls, weddings It was ace and so useful... Try it. You might like it

That's more the spirit Bryn. We haven't actually taken our caravan to a campsite as the idea just makes us cringe. It is nice to roll into a field where our mates are pitching and just get a cup of tea on though! (well, apart from the fact that there isn't a gas bottle in our caravan at the mo, so we actually can't...)

Yeah, I think a lot of it comes down to your own attitude as opposed to worrying about the stereotype. I'd never camped before we got married. I still don't like elements of it but I know its enabling us to do things we otherwise couldn't and is good fun for small people. As long as you don't lay out wads of cash for a newish top wack caravan and are happy to stay in modest sites rather than everything on your doorstep type sites, it is a cheap and flexible way of getting around. Shedspeed, try looking out for a Nimrod too.

Got memories of some great sites in the 'old days' in Cornwall and Devon, but best was a stinking old farmers place where we ended up helping out with the animals etc... and had a whale of a time. Some of these sites can be sterile TBH - but if you're just hitting the wide blue yonder - try it out with a loan or hire....... you need to also find out how 'you' feel pulling the thing!

I bought a caravan once... I 'dismantled' it with an axe and used it to make a trailer with....
For what they cost (and what campsites cost), I'd much rather have a 'proper' getaway in a B+B or something

True, pets can be a problem - we always leave ours with family Plenty of holiday cottage places will take pets though! I bought a caravan once... True, pets can be a problem - we always leave ours with family Plenty of holiday cottage places will take pets though! That's what we used to do, but with my crushed disc I was finding it harder and harder pitching a tent and sleeping on the ground at car shows too, so a caravan filled both briefs...

Very recently bought one dirt cheap but yet to use it. Paying £85 (I think) for 6 months storage but you might find a friendly farmer who'll charge less. I'm not a great tower (especially reversing) but don't mind trying. It looks like a great way of spending a close family holiday on the cheap and we can't wait to get going. A quick example (if this your kind of thing) is that I phoned a Haven site and for seven nights in your own touring caravan it's only £120 including site passes and electric hook up for two adults and two kids. Ok, you've got your food on top of that but most caravans have decent cookers/fridges/microwaves and it's definately more fun rustling your own scran up. There's thousands of site all over Britain and if you go when it's not overly busy you could roll up to one site, stay a night and if you don't like it move on to another one the next day.

I'm in the same boat as you Akku! Was thinking about cheap holidays and SWMBO won't entertain camping and keeping two little 'uns amused during a longer flight doesn't bear thinking about. Monaey playes a buig part in it too so if it's not as inexpensive as I'd imagined then I guess I'm off to a bit of a non-starter.
