205 has it's MOT on Thursday. ;D
The only thing is, the valve stem seals are well beyond there best and the engine smokes a fair amount, especially when cold and under heavy load.
Been reading the MOT check list and it says:
EXHAUST EMISSIONS - This check is carried out using special equipment - The exact details will depend on the age and model of the vehicle. - Excessive smoke (visual check). - Diesel smoke is tested using a smoke meter.
Now I would have the head off and replace the seals but it's only just had a new head gasket and i will be building up a decent head for it over the summer.
Is it likely to be a problem for the MOT? And will it be causing any damage?

Although as an older car the test isn't quite so strict it will fail on the visible smoke test. Have you thought about just popping it down to your test station and asking them their thoughts before you take it in?
I used to work at a Pug dealership way back when and it was so common to be changing piston rings and valve stem seals it was ridiculous. 205 diesel and petrol, 405 petrol but not so much the 309 for some reason, they all suffered with it!

Only one way to find out really....
Make sure the car is well up to temperature before you drop it off. Give it a good hard workout on the way there.

Unfortunately It has to be trailered there Fingers crossed then... it's too late now! My dads dropping it there and the morning and picking it up in the evening so it could be done any time in the day.

They'll warm it up before they test it.
Sorry to be a bit of a jonah but smoking under heavy load suggests rings more that valve stems to me.

Well I have a whole spare engine that'll go in rather than changing the head and forking out on a new gasket set! I was planning to build the head up onto that so either way the smokey one's coming out soon. Was just hoping it could wait until the head was ready. EDIT: I have a compression tester so I can find out if it's the rings pretty easily!

mine is smokey on startup and for the first mile or so.
after that it is fine, and it passed its mot a few weeks back with only an oil leak advisory and a new brake cylinder needed.
try running it for a while on the morning and revving it, get rid of the curse word and take it.

Well with mine it plumes out for the first few minutes, then after a while it clears up a bit but there's still smoke. I'm hoping it'll get away with just an advisory.

I'd suggest an oil change and see what the tester says. My 205 CJ passed the test with knackered valve stem oil seals, and it looked like it was sending smoke signals, when you first revved it, but it soon cleared.

Looking a bit deeper into it, it's the density of the smoke coming out that affects it not the volume. Although quite a lot comes out it isn't that dense, ususally so thin that it can only be seen from certain angles.
Oh well, as I said, fingers crossed for a happy MOT man!
