Well, here are a few pics of motors I have snapped whilst travelling these great countries... Who knows what this little rear wheel drive beauty is? A rather large v8 Holden This looked like Holdens equivilant of our Firenza, but the v8 exhaust note and super-charger whine as it went past hinted at somthing rather pokey under the bonnet! Oh, I'm sorry, but I had to take a picture of this Ford Capri. Bleugh! Not old, but definately retro. Has eny one else seen one of these Nissans? I thought it looked pretty cool.

These Datsuns are everywhere in Oz and NZ. And none of them are rusty! Why don't Ford give us cool pick-ups like this. Based on Falcon (Mk2 Granada). Cute little Datsun Matt black 323. I would love this as a daily. Just needs a healthy chop of the springs! Don't know what this 510 had under the bonnet, but it sounded great. Snapped a pic as it turned around in front of us, then saw it parked up the road. And this is the 323 that I was going on about a few days ago. 300hp 12a rotary engine hiding under the bonnet, it looked so right. I want, i want.

mazda 1000 ,I put a 265cubic inch vakiant motor in one... must be brisbane??? the next is a Holden 1967 HR model, nearly all Sixes as the V8 didn't come out until after this series. Some retro V8's and some late injected v6's but NOT a popular model at all. The Green one is an LJ Torana,a 135 mph car in GTR form.that's a 186cubic inch six. It's actaully a decendent of the vauxhall Viva. The capri, best left alone, they were built in OZ for the US market where they fasiled to sell, they are actually a MX Mazda with a ford skin. and less than half the value. The falcon is a Falcon and ford succeeded in selling the same car from 1960 to 1989 by changing the skin and updating the mechanicals slightly each year, they are a bit bigger than a grananda and almost OZ exclusive, apart from Agentina or brazil where they only changed the mechanix and kept the same outer skin.

The red mazda is a 1300. Not many of the wagons like that around though. The green torana is a circa 1970 L J "GTR XU1" Type in Peter Brock to your google and see what happens. They came out standard with a straight 6 engine 186 cubic inch with triple stomberg carbies. They were developed to beat the ford falcon GTs at Bathurst...and they did! It all started with the holden 6 in an Austin A30. I saw this car race many times and it was a sweeet thing to see. If you want a good read regarding the development of these little pocket rockets, check this site out www.brock05.com/gallery1.phpThe "rather large V8 holden is a HR series circa 1966, they didn't have the bent motor, only the 186 and 161 CID also a 186 "S" duel throat stromberg and headers. If it had a V8 it would be a retro fitted jobbie...easy to do as the engine bay was pretty big.. And the "nice little Datsun" is actually a toyota corolla! The Mazda Coupe is a "929", can't tell you much about the "lump" (donk) in that one The red datsun you call a 510 is a Datsun 1600 down here. I think there was a "SSS" whish was the rally version. I think that is the badge on the left front guard... the little Datsun wagon is a "120Y" and you are right there are multi of them. Early 70s I think 1200cc of pulsating power in that one. www.brock05.com/mrhdtgallery/A301.jpg[/img]

I thought I was quite car knowledgable, but now I think maybe not so! The red Mazda wagon has a 1200 badge on the side, so maybe a Mazda 1200? The Toyota Corolla that I called a Datsun - I should know better really, as I used to have a '74 Corolla very similar to that! As for the information about Peter Brock - cheers for that. My surname is also Brock, so I will have to look into this guy a little more! Anyway, keep your comments coming, and I shall try to update when possible. Scraps.

To me, a mercmad man ,Peter Brock ( not to be confused with yank pete brock) is more famous for the "molecular polariser,"* ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D,and is like Jonny farnham ,a real legend here ,but unheard of outside the antipodes.I always wondered why he retired from racing as he's still pretty fast in a rally car.heres a blurry old pic of the mazda with a valiant hemi six,not as fast as it should have been.

mea culpa mea culpa the Mazda is a 1200, the 1200 was the ancestor of the 1300, whicj=h was released at the same time as the R100, but i have age on my side so memeory can sometimes be rubbery! you have revitlaised my local retro enthusiasm. i will go down to my local safeway and go ballistic!!!! yes 4 exclamation points... Peter Brock was a driver of the winning car at Bathurst 9 times before he retired. It started of a 500 mile race then moved to 1000km, with 2 drivers and a variation of rules. It is raced on a mountain side track in country NSW and would hols it's own with any touring car race in the world. I know I am biased but this race is Unique. check out some trivia about it here scs.une.edu.au/StudentFiles/HomePages/174_96/Bathurst/TitlePage.htmlciao for now...........David

Here is a pic of the Torana GTR XU-1 Motor/Donk/Lump This iste is a resto of the next model aftr the green one above the "L J" . These cars were made almost exclusively to race at Bathurst. There was a class called "Series Production" and there needed to be at least 200...YES 2 whole hundred..cars sold prior to the race to allow the cars to be eligible..The race cars were supposed to be straight off the dealers floor but a lot of insulation and all sorts of other weight saving details seemed to fall of on the way to the track...Cheating I hear a cry...BULLSH%T..It was nothing but Australian Ingenuity!! Ha Ha. I could go on and on ...The other car that was involved in this was the Ford Falcon GT HO. (Handling Option) a locally made beast with a 351 cid donk and undisclosed hp (as with Rollers) There is a legendary photo of a GT on an Australian highway doing 130mph and the tacho hitting about 6000rpm. It was legal in those days. The GT with the optional low ratio diff was the fastes accellerating 4 door sedan in the world at that time. Faster over the quarter mile and to 100mph than a Lambo Espada. Go here and read about them all! www.fouronthefloor.com.au/garage/garage.htmlThere was also a Chrysler Valiant Charger with a 265 cid hemi 6 with triple carbs (Webers I think) that was built to compete with the other 2 but didn't cut the mustard. Went in a straight line like poo off a shovel but didn't go round corners too well. Enjoy...David

User comments on the Ford XY Falcon GTHO
Ph3 spec Correction jg33ll 15-8-2004 Just to correct a couple of entries and add to ... (a)The carb is Holley list 4653 ,780 vac secondaries not dbl pump. (b)Sump has no ears. That was planned for Ph4 XAGTHO. (c) No stainless drop tank. Had option 64 which is 36 Gallon steel tank available on XW thru to XY models. (d) Had 54H bodyshell which is reinforced same for any 351 engine. (e) Had XA (next model) front spindles / wishbones, reset springs ,shocks, and front bar, rear stab bar.(not fitted GT) (f) approx 130 remain in Australia and 10 or so in NZ. australian built legend phase 3 23-7-2004 the phase 3 is a legendary car. in those days it was capable of well over 140mph, that meant it was an extremely fast car. as mentioned no sedan could get near it and the speed that this car reached was capable only by italian performance cars. it took an aussie manufacterer 30 or someting like that years to build a car that can beat it in speed and performance not to mention being the fastest 4 door sedan for 25 years. it held the title for that long and were talkin aussie here compared to the rest of the world.i personally would do anything to own or even drive one of these. that awesome power, sound and looks not to mention that legendary status that this car possesses. what about bathurst that year in 1971. moffat had put the most devastating bathurst win to date even with a beer box blocking the air intake of the car. well that did go down to the driver but what more can i say about moffat hes a champion. if only the phase 4 actually went into production. it would be a killer. classic aussie muscle XJS Lover 16-6-2003 While the story is correct to an extent, the devil as they say is in the detail. The phase 3 GTHO was a totally different car to any of its suburban sibblings including the GT. It had ears on the sump for increased oil holding capacity and hense the engine ran cooler under extreme loads. The carburetor was the biggest ever used on any production Falcon, being a Holley 780cfm double pumper. The intake manifold was of a different design. And the biggest difference that nobody but the select few who ever got to work on them, was under the rear quarter panels, where extra reinforcing was placed for extra regidity. Further into the cars racing life (1971) Ford realised the obvious (that the braking was woeful) and had Globe, an australian wheel manufacturer, build a run of 5 spoke 15 X 7 mag wheels, after finding that they reduced brake temperatures by 40%. While the story is good, for the most revered car ever built in Australia it is simply to short and undermines the sublety of Fords engineers.

Ah back in the day when Aussie cars competed on equal terms with the best the world had to offer and usually bet them.
Then the started losing and one by one banned all the overseas entrants until now its so highly regulated they cant even enter a Holden Monaro because Ford don't have an equivalent model so its become a solely Falcon Commodore race in which they take road cars and spend more than an average supercar on them so they go well but not world class by my standards
sorry I'm ranting I just don't think Bathurst is all its capable of being anymore

It's all on the plate! Hi Christoff! ps. Both Pete and Peter Brock are well worth researching. I spent a day online doing just that recently, triggered by some BRE liveried 510s and then finding a load of Aussie racing stuff...completely unrelated as it turns out.
