Latest update from the garage ... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Since my last post here I have started to slowly take some parts of the car. Started on the front of the car - My plan is to get the engine out in the near future. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC00992golf.jpg) Continued with taking of the front fenders .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01007golf.jpg) I'm really happy with the way things look in here ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Very little rust and mostly surface. Looks good for a 25 year old car. The fenders had never been taken of the car I think ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) It was tricky getting the fenders of as they where heavily covered in thick seam-sealer which covered the bolts and glued the fenders on to the body. Fender have rust in bottom corners and on the arches - Will probably be replaced. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01024golf.jpg) I have also pulled some parts from the engine bay - trying to prepare for taking out the engine and gearbox. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01052golf.jpg) This car has really been sprayed with rust protection - The wiring harness to the headlights was covered in the sticky black stuff ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01053golf.jpg) While I worked on the Golf my friend came in to change a gearbox in his Golf 3 .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01056golf.jpg) And the reason why it needed to be changed - A blown differential made two holes in the gearbox house ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01079golf.jpg) Later I had to try to remove some of the old rust protection from the wheel wells . This had dried out and almost looked like tarmac. The layer was around 5 mm. thick ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01069golf.jpg) Because it had dried up it chipped of pretty easy: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01075golf.jpg) It did not take that long to come to this point: ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01101golf.jpg) Because the was no rust left I did not want to go in to the factory sealer. I think the dry layer of rust protection will be removed and later a new layer will be applied. I think this is the current status ... ;D ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01054golf.jpg)

New update 8 June ... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Last Sunday me and my friend got up early to go to the Auto Scrapper. This place is kind of special as they have a lot of used body parts for older cars form the 60's and 70's. A lot of parts for old Opels, Fords and so on. We did not find that much we could use but it is so great to see all these old parts. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) One of the rooms - Full of lamps, windscreens-wipers, mirrors and so on... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01121golf.jpg) Upstairs doors, bonnets and other body parts are piled up .. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01122golf.jpg) I bought every chrome door handle I could find - Mostly 70's Passat and Audi doorhandles. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01132golf.jpg) They look rough but they polish up really well and I got them cheap ;D Back in our garage I have worked on the Golf .. Continued to remove rust protection. I did know that my panels (sills ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ) where bad and rusty on both sides of the car, but on the drivers side it had spread to the floor pan. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01137golf.jpg) Cleaned of, marked and cut this out .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01156golf.jpg) Creating this hole... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01158golf.jpg) Also had to cut out a part of the inner panel .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01162golf.jpg) Fabbed up this plate to repair that ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01163golf.jpg) And a part for the floor ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01165golf.jpg) ... Looking like this from the bottom ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01166golf.jpg) A little trimming is needed before I start welding.. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Also used a little time on polishing this water tube for the cylinder head .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01150golf.jpg) The engine starts to look really naked .. Only missing a few things before the engine can come out of the car. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01177golf.jpg) The progress this weekend has been a bit slow - as it has been really hot here. It was much better to sit down a have a cold beer rather than working ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) More updates soon ..

I did not use that much time in the garage last weekend because of Le Mans. (GO Tom Kristensen and Audi! ;D ) I hope to go to the garage this weekend to do more work. Last weekends result: 1. primered fuel pump... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01191golf.jpg) Fuel pump with first coat of paint .. I really like the beige paint together with the polished aluminium ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01199golf.jpg) And 1 clean and more glossy oilfilter console ... ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01195golf.jpg)

I was in the garage yesterday to work on the Golf - Startet welding up the rust in the inner panel and driversside floor. What a pain in the arsch! That really tested my patience - for some reason it did not work out for me. Ok it's been some time since i last did bodywork, but i don't think that was the reason. I did not get done and i don't even want to take pictures and upload them here On top of that i did not use my welding mask which means that the skin in my face feels a bit tight today ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) ;D ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Better luck next time ...

It's been some time since the last update - and I almost feel bad -The progress is slow ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I'm trying to get the motivation going - My friend at the garage will soon get his project in ... Maybe that helps? But anyway: Took of the ugly dobble fartcan - This won't be going on the car again! ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01215golf.jpg) Cleaned up the A-pillars and gave them some primer - Very clean and free of rust! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01213golf.jpg) Found a small rusthole in the driverside ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01221golf.jpg) Played around with some ATS Classics ... ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01229golf.jpg) At the same time my friends dailydriver came in for suspension overhaul including adjustabel shocks .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01223golf.jpg) Got this part home from the other end of Denmark - Original VW 1978, but in nice condition! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01951golf.jpg) Foundt some stuff at home, while moving other stuff around: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01956golf.jpg) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01960golf.jpg) And the current status from the shop - engine ready to come out! ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01978golf.jpg)

Did some work last weekend - But a bit disapointing ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Found more rust in the passenger side floar/inner panel.. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC01998golf.jpg) I new there was some - but not like this. Cut out a part of the outer panel to inspect the damage: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02004golf.jpg) Could be worse - but its bad enough! ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02006golf.jpg) Removed some more rust and started cleaning the area around The repair will be something like that in the drivers side. I'm not real happy with the result of this, even if it won't be visible. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) The rust is gone - but I think it looks like curse word! But i have not done that much bodywork in the past. I'm learning by doing ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02008golf.jpg)

Thanks ... The oil filter console was cleaned of with a wire wheel like this - mounted in a hand drill: ![](http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Rdkcr-ySL._SL500_AA280_.jpg) After that a quick polish with a cloth wheel and some hard wax. I like the result aswell - looking forward to see how it holds up when used.

Still a bit slow with the progress here ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Used a couple of weekends to help my friend with the Passat, as it need to be ready for an inspection. I will probably get more time to work on the car now, as i have lost my good job as VW/Audi mechanic ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) The financial crisis have caused a huge drop in the amount of work, therefore - to many mechanics! I hope to be able to come back soon, and get my job back... Anyway - i will try to use some of my free time now to work on the car. Last things done is taking out the centre console, and removing the front half of the carpet - ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02045golf.jpg) Good thing is to se solid floors... ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02046golf.jpg) Cleaned the edges and cut all rust out. Will soon make new pieces of sheet metal to weld in. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02044golf.jpg)

Back to working on the Golf - Had to do other things in the garage, and go to some meating, and search for a new job... But today i made a little more progress i think - Got some more metal welded in the floor ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) From this: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02044golf.jpg) To this ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02102golf.jpg) Outside... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02096golf.jpg) And plugwelded... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02104golf.jpg) (The pictures are kind of blury sorry for that - Makes the welds look a little weird. Today the actually turned out OK for a reason ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ) But still a long way to go before new outer panels can be welded on...

I might end up with a new job in the beginning of 2009, I have contact with a company that needs another mechanic. Will go and speak with them again between christmas and new year. Did some more work on the inner panels .. No pictures taken. It get's to boring with 500 pictures of my panels in this thread ;D One of the other things done was a bit of cleaning on my carb. Used Würth's Carb Cleaner. Smells bad but pretty effective. I don't have gaskets for the carb so i did not take it apart. Picture shows the result: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02155golf.jpg) Also repainted my pulleys (and other small parts) - Was not satified with the previous result. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Small news again ... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Have been working more on the front part of the floars - Drilled of the factory support bracket, and cleaned them. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02162golf.jpg) I suspected there would be rust where they were mounted - And I was right. Driverside had rusted though. Cut out and welded fresh metal in both driver and passenger side (passenger side shown here): ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02166golf.jpg) Brackets go back later, for the "factory" look ;D Made a good deal yesterday - Got this doar for something like 50£ delivered outside my house: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02181golf.jpg) Excellent shape - Only a couple of small dents. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02173golf.jpg) A little dirty but complete and free from rust and holes ind the doarboard. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02180golf.jpg) No rust in the corners either ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) I'm happy! Now I just need one more ...

Have done more work on the rust problem in the panels. No pictures of that, they will be here when it is done... Most important news is that I finaly have the engine out of the car! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) I actually just got home from the workshop now. Pictures tell the story: Started out with a struggle to get the driverside mount disconnected. the bolt was absolutely stuck inside the mount ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02192golf.jpg) Fighted long with that until I made the discission to take out the sawzall and just chop the bolt on both sides! Once that was done it was time to use the crane: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02194golf.jpg) Unscrew the other mounts (Easy task!), and start lifting ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02195golf.jpg) Leaving this dirty hole .. ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02196golf.jpg) Out on the floor - Will the going on to the engine stand soon: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02198golf.jpg) The destroyed enginemount - It all just fell out on the floor when the engine came out: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02209golf.jpg) More progress soon I hope ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Got the engine mounted on the engine workstand ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02213golf.jpg) Took off the exhaust and inlet manifolds ... ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02218golf.jpg) Used heat on the nuts to avoid breaking anything when removing the exhaust. Two studs came out, but nothing broken ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02231golf.jpg) The engine will get cleaned and painted - Gaskets will be changed and engine checked for any errors, more on that later. Used some time on cleaning the inlet manifold .. Looked pretty bad when it came off the engine: ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02232golf.jpg) A little later .... so much better ![](http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/SyrusGrissom/DSC02236golf.jpg) At the moment i'm working on this nasty looking starter... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
