My current cars don't do it for me in a particularly special way either, other than being nice machines in their own way.
There is one machine that still raises a grin though.
My Honda 400/4 is too small for me, it's underpowered and poor handling by today's standards and it's got woeful brakes. But I love it, it's an utter hoot to ride. Why? Because it's a bit curse word to ride I can explore the edges of its abilities. I would kill myself before I got near the edges of the abilities of a modern sportsbike but on the 400/4 I can do it on a twisty B road without exceeding the NSL. That and the wonderful noise of the revvy little air cooled 4 means I can't wait to come back for more!

Everytime I drive past a window in the woody I always stare!I've learnt wherethe best reflectin' ones are local to me now, always drive deliberately slow past em to have a look!
And I love how everyone asks, except the initiated few,why my cars covered in wood and I've tried to make it look like "the car outta Uncle Buck!"?!?!? I simply tell them if they don't get it,I'm not gonna explain!Simple as that. They don't seem to appreciate the hibiscus flowers hanging from the mirror and on the gearknob either.Apparently they're "gay!" I told them to tell Kelly Slater that and seehow long they last!
I LOVE mycar!

Here are some of the reasons why I think I love my car…
Because of the stupid grin I had on my face when I got home from work last night with a new tax disc in my hand.
Because even though I had to jump start it (again!), I didn’t care, it just built up the excitement of not driving it for a few months.
Getting two chufties from people at the garage when I pulled in on fumes (the car was covered in ‘rain dust’ and looked a bit of a state).
Not batting an eyelid when nearly £30 of super gave me only half a tank (how is that possible!?)
The guy asking me this morning “Is that a mk1? Golf?” He’s learnt something today.
How much fun it is driving it on an interesting piece of road.
Looking at the displeasure of other drivers when I hold them up whilst negotiating stupid speed bumps.
When I look out of the office window, the sun is blinding me – because it’s shining off my C pillar.

My car is rattly, creaky and never runs the same two trips in a row. It makes a scraping noise due to the fact my rear mudflaps constantly touch the ground when I'm driving. I has the 0 - 60 time of a London bus. The radio is curse word and the heater doesn't have an off function. The ride height hurts my back when I have to bend to insert the key and the steering is so heavy, my shoulder aches after even a short journey. The fuel economy is horrendous and it doesn't like selecting gears in the mornings. In the wet it understeers terribly then finishes off with a huge dollop of oversteer. Its noisy and smelly and has less luxuries than a police cell.
And I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For all the above reasons

Great thread, love the post Akku.
Last time I felt this kind of love was about a month ago when I drove around in my old Mini a few times before I sold it. When I got in and closed the door it just felt like good times where to be had. Although I'm sure all the neighbors were slamming their windows such and grumbling about that stupid old Mini I like to think all those middle aged guys ran to their windows with grins like 8 year boys all jealous of me as I bombed past time with a mean look in my eye.
However I do think you can have too much of a good thing and using a car that makes you smile all the time for getting to a-b can kill your love. It did with my XR4i.

I used to quite enjoy driving places, until i had to commute in the car, now i hate driving the car, and hence want to a) move closer to work b) get a fun car :-)

I loved my beetle, and the only reason I was able to sell it without feeling at all guilty was because it'd been sitting MOT'less on an airbase for a few months and I'd driven it maybe 6 times in that period. Every time I started it I thought 'woooo, right, look out for the flat spot again, and scare someone today with it backfiring. BAG LOADS of character...
I've not had a chance to get attached to the other beetle, it just sits there atm.
The BMW I really like, not love, but really like. Its got plenty of character, and like all cars, pisses me off at time. its a good laugh though, especially when the back end comes out. The one thing that spoils it for me is the MGP thingy, if that wasn't there I'd enjoy the car immensely more as mpg being bad - more money, so not knowing what you're doing = good!

living close to work is FTW.
1. many studies have shown the levels of stress caused by commuting distances in excess of 40 minutes shorten your life by typically 7 years.
2. save the planet, maaaaaan
3. you can drive a car with utterly curse word MPG (in which case ignore point 2 above...)
4. More time at home to tinker with cars / remind you wife what you look like. (the later point may not be a good thing if you've lost your looks with age...)
5. Sitting in traffic jams you absorb so many toxins and other cack both by breating it in and also by some that you "absorb". I read some study a while ago which said that the driver (or passengers) in a car are exposed to like 3 times the level of polutants from that car than some one standing 2 meters away from the car. Or something like that. My facts would be so much more impresive if I could actuallty remember them, eh...
Sometimes the less I drive a car the more I like it when I do... because of the "oh, thats a nice change" effect.
Or something.
Anyway its a cool excuse to own loads. So long as they all run...

Since I've gone back to freelancing I enjoy driving my Jeep more. I don't quite get the childish pangs of tom foolery I desire though.

Depends on the commute AK. I do 25 miles in about 40 mins and as I near home, I get happier and happier as the roads quieten down and I can open up the taps. In fact, I can thrash all of our cars on that journey and the chances of me breaking the speed limit are slim! (bends crop up before the speed can build up!)
Conversely, I used to commute across Birmingham - 12 miles in 45 minutes - and that drove me mad. Not pleasurable and I didn't hit a speed limit higher than 40mph.

I keep thinking I've lost the ability to love cars. I used to, then I got a job in the car industry. I imagine it's the same with porn stars. After spending all day rutting, it probably isn't so much fun after a while. If you follow. Where was I going?
Messing about with shiny brand new cars day in, day out - or more accurately sitting in meetings talking about the finer details of shiny new cars, has completely removed my interest in them, and the desire to earn money to spend on them. But every time I get in a rattly old car, something unique, with real character; I want to take it home and keep it.
So in conclusion, I need more space. And don't want to be a porn star.

I love my 205 Gti. Probably because you don't see them on the roads anymore, its something different, the worlds full of silver Clio's, my modern workhorse, but then 15-20 years ago 205 Gti's were everywhere, but now it stands out from the crowd.
I love because it showcases what I can do, the Mi16 engine conversion, the radio install, and little things like a rear interior light, along with a 405 interior light delay timer, that is wired to the central locking (anyone who has a 405 will know what i'm on about)
I love because it gets admired, the approving glances at the lights, I got stopped in the supermarket car park, by someone who said 'I used to have one of these, I wished i'd never sold it'.
I love because its mine, its bought and paid for, and I feel good owning it. I look out of the window just so I can see it, I go out to the garage just to stare at it, it gives me a warm glow inside, when all wrong with the world I feel better when I see it, even better when I start up ready to go somewhere.
Best of I love because it a damn good drive. It goes like stink, handles sublimely, the steering talks to you, you can feel the road beneath you, its as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.
That why I love my 205 Gti.

Well how do you put it into words I love my car (the Monza obv) because in terms of smiles per mile I've never owned a car that gave so much I love the fact that - it turns heads - makes small children put their fingers in their ears - goes round corners and not too shabby on the straights I don't care when a trackday uses £105 woth of fuel and probably same again in tyres - it's what a built it to do and if I can't afford a track day I don't do one I like the fact that I think it's inspired a few people to also love a Monza and the ABS club as a result has a lot more in the club I also enjoy the fact it isn't finished and when I get the off few pennies together I can keep picking up bits an pieces to further improve it..... like these just how good is a 24V 3.0 straight six gonna sound with tripple dellortos

I love my Manta. It's the first car I've bought where I've thought "Yeah, I really want one of those" rather than "Oh christ I need a car tomorrow or else"
I love the fact that it's by far the oldest car in my works car park (and it's only F reg!)
I love the fact that people don't know what it is
I love it that nobody understands why I bought a 20 year old tarted up hatchback instead of a nice modern Clio
I love the fact that it smells of petrol when I stop abruptly at a junction
I love the way it locks the rear wheels when I change down approaching a junction
I love the way it looks sat in the car park in the sun
I love the fact that people think I'm a curse word for spending £1000 on a 20 year old "shed"
I love the way people look at it (either with a look of bemusement, or admiration) when I drive past
I love the fact it has no power anything and people think I'm some sort of macho lunatic for driving it on a daily basis
I love the way it barks and sounds like it's going to burst at the redline and the way it makes me feel like I'm Austin McHale every morning as I enter and exit another chicane on the way to work
I got into it after work with a grin at 6pm today in the lovely sunshine, wound down the window and drove home in a mixture of leisurely trundling and frantic sawing at the wheel, and I was still grinning when I pulled up outside the house
