Balls, my lovely hydraulics install just went in flames in the Benz. Fire brigade out. Big traffic tailback. All very exciting. Boot is black dribbly mess. Quite a bit of smoke damage, but interior has survived - just stinks of battery acid and melted plastic now. Looks like a hose moved and shorted 36v to earth. Still, gives me a chance to it all again a bit neater I suppose

curse word the bed! As long as you're okay, fella. Cars can be fixed easier than you There won't be any of that nasty bone-dissolving acidic residue hanging around back there will there? Or is that just ECU components that leave that...? *n

Most non-triumphant. Glad it wasn't worse, and good on you for looking on the bright side with the new improved install!

Bugger. Glad to hear you're still positive about things, though. Did the wiring survive?

Cheers for the comments guys.
I came off the bypass into a bit of traffic and could see some white smoke in the rear mirror. Thought hmm, head gasket may be going, but nothing more of it. About a mile up the road the traffic stopped again and the smoke was really coming out - lifted boot. Ahh, flames. Not good. I'd stopped opposite a petrol station (yes far enough away not to cause them a problem), and a heavily pregenant woman from said petrol station came waddling over with a foam extingisher - bless her, will have to drop some flowers in on the way home. Fire bridage turned up a couple of minutes later.
All very exciting.
Luckily (if that is an appropriate word) it was the left side that went up - all the ECU's etc are on the right.
Will need new batteries, couple of hoses, some wiring (not much), new carpets and of course the mirror panel is now just a blackened droopy mess!
This is all part of the fun with hydraulics, although I haven't set one fire for ages!
Silly thing is, I took the extinguisher out to clean the car at the weekend, and forgot to put it back in.

Perhaps a little symbolic airbrushing could be added to the rebuild.

Glad you're OK and the Benz isn't too heftily hammered...... What's deal when you are this unfortunate regarding noxious fumes etc..? Just wondering if the stink is hiding anything harmful matey. Go careful!
