well after failure in selling this fd estate I'm now putting it back on the road as a cheap runabout/partshauler/tat yard junk mover. the engine in it is missing an few items after closer inspection and what with fuel prices I'm considering a diesel engine, got a good source for cheap fuel  and i drive a diesel company van that does good mpg. what rear wheel drive diesels are there out there that would pull well and give a good mpg , got to be as cheap as possible to pick up , cheers ade   |

VW engine from a Volvo.
Most merc diesels.
Best thing is, research a bit which runs best on your "special" fuel.

thanks guys , the special fuel is just plain diesel , thats all , i would love to drop my fully rebuilt small block chevy in it but thats waiting for my bedford cf van , I'm trying to spend as little as possible on the fd and the rest of my money on my cf van. like the idea of kepping it almost gm with the omega diesel , any body know a cheaper tham cheap outlet for these engines. ade

i am sure you know, but whatever engine gets good mpg, and has a fuel pump that is up to your special fuel needs |

Isuzu lump bolts up to a carlton box but for something like that i'd be looking for a merc six pot.

Yep a sprinter Engines got to be worth a look,how many sprinters/VW lt 35's do you see in the fastlane of the motorway doing insane speeds.

i drive a merc vito van thats 95 bhp and it cruises on the motorway quite nicely , never thought of the merc engines to be honest, school for thought there i suppose.

Has to be a GM/BMW six for the FD for me, otherwise it's back to my old hobby horse of the XUD lump and LDV pilot box, but that would suit a slightly smaller car(and give veggie burning capability if required!).
Have wondered about some of the later VAG units, and I believe there are ways to mount these north/south for RWD, with some adaptors available to suit type 9 boxes......not totally sure on that.

no veggie fuel for the fd , if i deffo go diesel theres a 20 litre jerry can in the back of my company van that seems to gain fuel everytime i look in it. strange that aint it.

Look around for a C250 or an E300 diesel. They're gorgeous engines and they'll make an awesome cruiser. Try and get the one with the inline pump as the immobilsers are easier to get round.
If you want a sprinter engine go for an early 312 with the five pot. The later CDI stuff would be cool but i don't know of a way around the immobiliser yet.

I'm quite surprised about everyone raving about BMW diesels (of Omega, Land(Range?)Rover and e34 525tds fame! I've heard nothing but bad stuff about them - HonestJohn, various BMW forums... Does anyone know these well? Are there known weak spots (pump for example)? I love the modern BM turbodiesels from e39 onwards but if they go wrong, they go very very wrong and the repairs cost more than a good retro car. Just wondering what's the dirt on the old lumps.
