Right, David. Whatever you do, don't step down and don't roll over. That domain is YOURS. retro-rides.com and the 'Retro-Rides' identity is YOURS. It is your intellectual property. You are fortunate in that unlike many websites, you have been featured in the paper press countless times over the last few years. There is a clear and defineable link between 'retro-rides', 'retro-rides.com', this website and these fora. The law is on your side 100% in this. Cybersquatting ALWAYS gets handed to the 'rightful' owner if it reaches the courts. The spineless twunts will be relying on you not knowing your rights amd just letting them get on with it. I'll sort out some info for you tomorrow, dude but emember: Don't stress, don't worry, it is yours and it will be yours again. *n I don't know about HW, but thats certainly made me feel better about it D

We'll have to wait till next week to do anything about it.. the registration is marked as non-transferable at the moment (I guess because someone just bought it).. the domain is essentially worthless though is Google Adword CPM rating is jolly pain in the backside all and it glorified picture host as a site. The real action is on here. The only vexing thing is the name recognition. Until we get the domain back you can get to the front page here : www.retroridescommunity.com/Thanks to everyone that has offered to contribute. I'd say to buy a t-shirt, but they may be a touch inaccurate ... Big thanks to pandaselecta for actually buying a domain!! .. it may yet be needed

I'll sort out some info for you tomorrow, dude but emember: Don't stress, don't worry, it is yours and it will be yours again. *n You make it sond a lot more black & white than it is. Plenty of cybersquatting cases have been lost in the UK and USA. Its case is muddied when a UK citizen is making claim on a domain registered by a company in the USA. Good luck getting a ruling in a UK court applied in the USA. Is Retro-Rides a registered trade mark? Would www.retrorides.com have more claim on it than HW does? IP law is expensive and I've been on the losing side professionally a few times and one case I was on the fringe of not so long back whipped in a couple of hundred thousand pounds in legal fees before we gave up. This is why IP lawyers make the big bucks. I'm pretty sure I read a ruling that a domin name is not IP anyway. That was some developer trying to muscle in on the rights of a site he developed for someone who didn;t pay him or something. Until we know how much the squatter wants to release it we don't know what step 2 is.

Cannot believe this. If it's any help I use www.vidahost.com and I know the owner. He came on recommendation and is a prolific user of various other forums.

I don't think you should blame yourself, your hosting company is using some underhand tactics to make a few extra quid. I was quite surprised my jonny69.co.uk didn't get taken when it was offline for a few months in 2007. Trying to get it moved from the old host was a nightmare but the change has been worth it and being able to speak to the guy who runs the company on msn etc if I have problems just adds to my peace of mind. Maybe think about moving it when the renewal is next up.

They emailed me, and attempted to do the annual renewel. My email address and c/card details were out of date. So was my home address. Really they had no way to contact me. Serves me right for not keeping my details up to date.

It sucks big time, I've got a couple of empty domains on hands currently including performanceandnostalgia in both .co.uk and .com forms and I'm willing to set them both up to point to board for as long as it takes. Both are currently dormant so please feel free to squat on them if you need.
Let me know if this is any help.
Cheers

I'm not a solid enough user (not to mention non-retro-owner!) to have much of an opinion, but it would be nice to see the .com domain back in your hands as it is a very good URL for this site and the work that has been put into it

Its such a shame that a company who should provide you a service has seemingly dealt with this in such an underhand way. Ive not been the most prolific poster since ive been a member but i spend at least an hour on here a day and I'm sure most users are the same... That truly is to your credit Hotwire and I'm sure it often gets overlooked how much you have to put up with to keep this wealth of information avaliable to us all. Thankyou, and if a buyback ends up on the cards, I'm in.

Have to change the Tshirts (will get new tshirts for those that bought the old ones). I'm sure nobody would be so mercenary as to demand a replacement shirt, given the circumstances. If it comes to it, and there are reasonable grounds to pursue legal action I'll gladly chip in to the legal fund! Fingers crossed it'll get sorted, but I can understand your reluctance to give money to the cybersquatting bloodsuckers to get the domain name back.
