i thought i'd drag this up again, our torts are about 60 years old, and we'd put them in for hybernation...we happened to check on them and they'd been eaten by rats, one had it's face eaten, and his legs eaten down to the bone. and our big one has had leg chewed right down, his shell biten and his tail.
we raced them down to a specialist in cardiff, but one is dead now, and the other might need it's leg amputated. we're pretty gutted, by mum had them since she was a kid. so just check yours and make sure it's totally secure. it's the worst thing i've ever seen.

That sounds horrific and it freaked me out just reading it so I can't imagine what that must be like, very sorry to hear that and hope the other one survives. Thanks for the warning. We might not be able to hibernate them this year since me and girlfriend are currently put up at my parents so we're not really settled enough to try this for the first time. That really is tragic In other news the outdoor enclosure is now the indoor enclosure and they have acres of space, will post up photos soon.

Wow thats ace, I've been looking for something for mine (currently using a propergator with heat mat in the base. I have trouble getting hold of suitable wooden logs by me tho, where do you guys shop? Plan to build my Mork (See picture) a decent sized home out of an only shelf unit planning an upstairs using a ramp with drop guard heat lamp in the top and poolbit in the bottom. See Mork (when I first got him this summer)

I was going to get a tortoise but it must take hours to take them out for a walk so I got a dog instead

When you do have a garden for them make sure it's very secure. Our old tortoise used to escape regularly despite all manner of security. He eventually escaped for good about 30 years ago and was never seen again. He was about 20 yrs old by then, we'd had him since he was a baby. Hopefully someone took him in and he's still going strong.
