Today, besides finishing preparations for tomorrow's track day, I've built this. I've built this for my girlfriend's baby tortoises that she's had since December. They already have one, but thats for indoor use with a mount for a special sun replicating heat lamp. This one is their all singing and all dancing outdoor enclosure! It's probably 2.5 times bigger than their indoor one, which is a problem since she travels around a lot, which is why I made it in two bits. The mesh frame is so birds can't get at them! I'm not a great wood worker, but it should be fine. Here's some pics of the fellas They are tiny...

Nice Tort table, your going to loose them in there ;D
I would suggest you put some kind of lock on the lid though as Tortoise's are supprisingly strong.

i've got two, they must be about 60 years old now.. where do you get them from nowaday? Can't wait until my man is that old, but I'll be nearly/probably dead. You can get them from tortoise breeders, some species require papers, others however don't. (You can also get them from reptile shops and other 'pet' shops, however it's not recommeded due to the fact they are poorly housed - vivariums and such like)

Really want a tortoise, but at the same time seems a bit cruel, unless they are specifically bred to be pets I suppose.
Be ace, i could take it to work and everything :-)

These were specifically bred as pets from a very good tortoise breeder, and they've got the appropriate papers They cost me £95 for the first one, and £85 for the second (buy one, and you get a discount one the second ). One was her christmas present, the other was her birthday present! She's wanted tortoises forever, but she's never been in the position to have them before. We bought them this winter so they stayed inside, but we finish uni this summer, so they'll have the appropriate outdoor access they need. Anyone considering getting a tortoise www.shelledwarriors.com is a quality forum. If you're seriously considering a tortoise and read up on how to keep them correctly, I can pass on contact details of our breeder. As a rule, don't buy from pet shops. More than likely they are captured in the wild and imported. Not only they more expensive (loughborough pet shop sells imported ones for £180 ), they are much more likely to get sick through existing illnesses/ parasites. A lot of pet shops keep them in tank like vivariums, keeping them like this is not good for most (if not all IIRC) tortoises since it makes their environment damp and this can cause problems with their shells. If you buy from a pet shop, you are more likely be paying over the odds and possible vet bills on top, so its a false economy. (I've just a re-read, looks like I duplicated what Icey said!) We may certainely lose them in there! I built it to last a few years until we have some where permanent for them to live in a back garden. Icey, thats a quality setup. I was considering using seed trays, I'll more than likely do it for my next one. Great looking tort! How old is Lemon?? Ramirez: I was considering padlocking for security reasons, but anyone dedicated enough to steal them would be able to get through my workmanship! Bear in mind the wood sides are about 20cm tall, and the torts are about 5cms tall, we got a few years yet before they escape! Cheers!

One of my housemates at my house keeps terrapins/tort's - are they meant to be in a tank or a pen?

As far as I know, tanks can be very harmful to torts (at least most breeds I've looked at) because of the humidity they cause. I got all my info from www.shelledwarriors.com . I have no idea about terrapins though!

That's pretty good, been meaning to make one for my tortie but we're in between houses at the moment so its a bit awkward to do. What breed is that? Herman? I've got a 4 year old cherry headed redfoot, Tommy, had him for 3 years now, was in a bit of a state when we got him, he'd been fed on that rubbish dried food. But he's doing OK now. Loving the dandelions at the moment. We actually don't know if he is a he or a she, will probably take another year or two, but I have an inkling that he is a she. lol. ;D Picture is from last summer, hes loads bigger now, nearly the size of my hand and he's had his claws trimmed
