The modern 'made up' names come about through months and months of trying to hit on a word which isn't already taken and sounds like a good name but doesn't cause offence/hilarity etc in any of the markets the car's to be released in - just remember the MR2 in french

'Mondeo' is so-called because it's supposed to be a worldwide car. Except that it's not sold in America.
Capri and Cortina are exotic places, better than the boring Ford Anglia hehe

The BMW is called Becky because my friend Becky wanted me to name something after her and I'd just got the car. Hence Becky the BMW... BMW's are easy. Not sure why they missed out the 2 and 4 series though, managed all the rest from 1 to 8. And they probably did it because its easier. Same with rovers, but the rovers numbers don't seem to make as much sense to me. Peugot numbers don't seem to work properly either, but better than rovers. Could the beetle have been named after its namesake for the rounded shape?

IIRC the 911 was originally to be called the 901 but Peugeot had a fit because they 'owned the rights to' three-digit car names with 0 in the middle. :/ And then the makers of James Bond got all arsey when Peugeot brought out the 1007 and insisted it was called the Ten-Oh-Seven or One-Oh-Oh-Seven rather than the One-Double-Oh-Seven because they "own" the rights to the name Double-Oh-Seven. Alledgedly. Admittedly, sounds like curse word to me because I'm sure most people wouldn't confuse the world's worst spy with a pointless mini-MPV...

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

In enlightened America, the Dodge Demon was nearly sold as A valiant because the religious ones wanted the name changed...Little did they know that the Plymouth FURY was named after an irish spirit also, not because it was capable of Furious performance..ha ha . Lexus is an actual word,i did find the meaning recently but my mate Al Zheimer lost it. Another weird one is Datsun Fairlady, named because the boss of the company was a 'My Fairlady ' fan. but what about Suzuki Mighty Boy? was the boss of Suzuki Gay?. or Mitsubishi Pajero,Little pony or masturbator in Spanish...did I hear someone say that Mitsubishi never got a name wrong? I have seen "tredia's" because of the three diamonds in the badge but what about a Cordia? is that because you need lots of Cords to hold them together when they get old? I suppose one thing we can be thankful for,the japs never named there cars or engines after aircraft such as Armstrong Siddely Hurricane or Chrysler Spitfire. Can you imagine the sales of a mitsubishi Zero? The Name Subaru is japanese for the pleiades star formation as can be seen in their badge. Also means " the ugliest sound to ever emanate from a car exhaust" too.

I know Peugeot's UK marketing director and that one's actually true. They got some stern words from the Bond people about using the moniker "double oh seven" for the car. Still, since they never sold any, it's a moot point.

I heard that a lot of VWs are named after different air streams. Golf, Scirocco, Sharan and Polo are a few I seem to remember. I may be wrong though.
And mazdas RX range stood for rotary sports or something. God knows why, I have consulted the dictionary and sports has never, and will never begin with X.
And taken from wikipedia: "The Volkswagen Type 1, more commonly known as the Beetle or Bug, is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. Although the names "Beetle" and "Bug" were quickly adopted by the public, it was not until August of 1967 that VW itself began using the name Beetle in marketing materials in the US."
Edit: Just found out that the VW Golf gets its name from the German word "golfstrom" meaning Gulf Stream. Not sure about what streams the rest get there names from.
Edit (again): "Scirocco is Italian, named after a hot desert wind that blows from the shores of northern Africa across the Mediterranean. The car could have been named after the coachbuilder and the designer, llike the Karmann-Ghia, but in the style of Maserati, VW was going through a period of naming cars after winds. (Hence Golf for gulf stream, Jetta for jet stream, Passat, and Scirocco.) Besides, would the Sciroccos have sold as well with a name like Karmann-Giugiaro?"

Until now I always assumed the Golf was named after the sport, hence having a golf-ball-like gear shift knob. But Wiki says otherwise! It makes sense that it's German for Gulf. But then Polo must be named after the sport played by toffs on horseback... surely?

I don't know version names but I do know that Mitsubishi means "Three water caltrop" or " Three water chestnut" and Datsun was originally D.A.T. Motorcar Co, named after the three 1st letters of the founders surnames DAT was when they made large cars & trucks. When they started making small cars they used the tem "Datson" which means "son of DAT".
I think they changed it to DatsUn because 'son' means 'back luck' or 'loss' or something
Would love to know why they called their cars names like 'Cedric', 'Laurel' and 'Violet' !!

Never heard of a person who doesn't like the beautiful burbling sound of an Impreza before... With the MR2.... it was named the MR2000 in France, as if you said 'Emm Err Deux' it sounds like Merde, which means curse word. What was Mazdas reasoning with the 121, 323, 626, 929 etc?

As for the others like tiguan and Phaeton(awsome car in V10 TDi form BTW) i'm not so sure about. A Phaeton is a horse-drawn buggy. A Tiguan is a... funny made-up word? MR2 comes out as merdeux in French, which means curse word. A bit like Citroen with the DS (déesse, goddess) and LN/LNA (Hélene/Hélena), but bad.
