My dad's had this '76 Fender Telecaster Custom from almost new. it sat in the attic for years until he fished it out a few years back and gave it an overhaul, replacing wiring, switches, strings etc and generally sprucing it up. He doesn't really get time to play anymore, but I do so I've 'adopted' it unofficially Anyone got any ideas what it's worth? For insurance purposes! And anyone else into vintage guitars?

That's a Telecaster Custom. I've seen scruffy but playable ones up for around £1500.
Lovely guitars, Teles. Whenever I pick one up I'm overcome by an overwhelming urge to break into Springsteen's 'Darlington County'. ;D

Okay maybe I exaggerated He replaced the back of the pickup toggle swith utilising original knob etc, soldered dry joints and replaced cracked wires. Everything else is original. Basically put it back into genuine working order. What's a 'fair amount' in guitar terms? A few hundred, couple of thou?

Whenever I pick one up I'm overcome by an overwhelming urge to break into Springsteen's 'Darlington County'. ;D Put Custom in the original post My dad gets extremely annoyed with the fact that what was the original Deluxe, the model with 2 humbuckers, is now called the Custom! It has an amazing tone to it and is extremely versitile! While I'm at it, a couple of basses. Neither are retro but hey ho My Yamaha RBX 125, excellent cheap knock around bass! Honestly, 4 times as good as any Fender Squire or Peavey replica, and the same price. Had is 2 years ago and all i've done is change the strings and re-solder a dry joint. My dad's US Fender Jazz, a truely excellent bass. Has the nicest feel of any bass I've ever played, worth the extra few hundred quid over the Japanese version. I much prefer it to the Precisions I've played, although it is quite a bit heavier! I've been playing bass for quite a while now, only recently really taken to the guitar.

Nice Custom dude. Probably worth between 4 and 5 grand if it's mint and you find the right buyer/collector, so that's probably what you should insure it for. That way if it does get nicked, you can replace it and have some change. I wish my work sold cool vintage guitars instead of expensive modern stuff and budget cack

I had a 5-string Yamaha RBX, they are fantastic basses. Sold it when I stopped gigging 4 years ago.
Still got an '89 Jackson/Charvel 1B 4-string with oh-so-hair-metal pointy headstock. Owned it from new and I'll never part with it. They are rare, but don't know (or care) how much it's worth, every ding/sticker tells a story.

Nice Custom dude. Probably worth between 4 and 5 grand if it's mint I kinda doubt that. It's the worst time possible in the Fender history book, as that was when the machinery was just about worn out, meaning very poorly fitting necks/pick ups etc*. I've been out of touch with the market for a few years now (MS=having to stop playing) but about 15 years ago sold a Bigsby factory equipped one for high hundreds. I'd guess possibly a grand/grand and a half replacement, more if you were to buy from a Denmark Street shop *To the point where I couldn't sell my '79 large headstock 3 bolt Strat at all - which I'm glad of now, at least it's a nice ornament

Nice tele! I have a selection of old guitars and my Dad has a few too, basses as well. I much prefer them to new ones although admittedly I did treat myself to a new Fender shaped Christmas present (deluxe US 'Fat Strat') when in the States last December as the vintage ones were rather steep in price! I tend to like cheap obscure old guitars that are a bit battered rather than mint condition ones. My current favourite is a childs size (1/2 normal size) 'play and learn' mini acoustic spanish guitar which sounds pretty terrible but is fun to play. It's especially amusing as I'm over 6 foot and the guitar is tiny!

i thought early 70's fenders were meant to be better quality due to the company being bought by CBS(?) and investing in the company then selling the company on. thats the basis i bought my mustang on, mines a 71, so allegedly a better quality guitar than one made couple years prior.
i just found out its also doubled in value since i bought it in 2003! skillz!

Fenders were great up until about 1974 when CBS started cutting corners on the materials they used. But even the post 74 Fenders are going for silly money now, especially non standard models like the custom and the deluxe.

Fair enough, but as I say, the '79 Strat I have is junk - except for the neck, which is nice, if a little log like. Now, the 1970 ish (? Never did quite date that properly, confusing serial numbers 'meant' it was a '68 but I don't think they were making them then ) Paul, that was a beauty...

Gorgeous looking! Never mind the actual market value. It's real worth is in the sound it makes when played. I've just treated myself to an electro acoustic to try and learn again after a 25 hiatus!

this is my 1971 mustang, has copious amounts of playwear and cracked laquer that gives an amazing effect when the light hits it, unfortunatly none of that shows in the photo. promised myself a mustang and finally bought one as a present to myself for completing the 3rd year at uni.
