Pretty easy, as I'm going to cheat ! Using a ready mix can of Australian Coopers Lager ! Ok, here are the main bits to get started - from left ! Fermenting barrel and mixing spoon Coopers lager kit VWP steriliser 500g of spray malt ( you can use brewing sugar instead of course ! ) 500g of spray malt weighed out in a suitably stylish set of scales. Firstly, steralise everything with the VWP and wash out. VERY important, as you only want to ferment the ingredients of the beer - not any bacteria ! Forgot to take a few pics here ...but ...added the beer mix ( looks a bit like golden syrup ) and the spray malt to the fermentor. Then add 2 litres of boiling water and mix till the syrup has melted and everything is dissolved. At this point, the kitchen will smell like a horlicks factory. Then top up the fermentor to 23ish litres and add the yeast. Then add the lid, and leave to ferment for a week or so ( I usually leave them for 10 days ) and thats it ! In about 10 days I should ( all being well ) have some lovely beer to barrel. More pics as things start to happen.

Been thinking about doing this for a while now. Didn't realise it was quite as straight forward.
So where do you get the stuff from?

I don't think I dare try home brewing.
If I get it wrong, I get a tub of 5 gallons of stinking mess..
If I get it right.. I'd be well on the road to alcoholism. I'm just not sure I trust myself with a tub of beer that big, always sat there..

You can get the basics to get you started from Wilkinsons ! There are also lots of on-line homebrew shops, who will sell " starter kits " which will include everything to get your first brew underway. Will also do a quick how to on some " turbo cider " in the coming weeks !

Tonights action shot - the yeast has already started to munch away at the malt ...so we get some nice frothy action.

ha-ha! your a homebrewer too! I tend to stick to bitters, but I just finished a barrel of edme german lager. not bad ;D youngs are excellent kits for the budget minded. 40 pints for under £6, yee-haw! nice job, thrasher and good to mention the sterile bit, many people get bad beer as a result of not sterilising. wonder if 2 week old beer can be retro tho ;D being that the craze almost died out iin the seventies, its a retro past-time IMO ;D and I get my kits (apart from youngs, which roys stock) from here www.easybrew.co.uk/.

I've made bitters, stouts, porters, lagers, ciders and wine ..... The best EVER brew was simply a youngs definitive bitter kit made with caster sugar.......and here is a pic of some of it ( not that it hung around for long ! ) and some turbo cider ( on left ) and some wine..... thats enough I think...

Been learning about fermentation in chemistry..... We were told not to open the lid until it's all done, otherwise it oxidises and forms ethanoic acid. How critical is it?

You can open it for a while , I've never had any problems, some people just cover fermentors with clingfilm, there was even a webcam in the top of a fermentor bucket once, here - so it can't be that critical with something like this ! Just don't open it every five minutes thats all !

I've never thought about this, but is there a limit to how much alcohol you can brew on your own?

I remember trying a someone elses homebrew, Bleeding awful, and I was ill for days, so I view homebrew with great suspicion. Never ever again.

My mum did this when I was a kid - we used to get mullered sneaking the bottles out with mates. ;D Regular occurrences of bottles blowing the tops off in the larder... and the time she misread the instructions - instead of 2lbs of sugar she used 2bags!!!! Oh my giddy aunt!

Ooh that's fun. I've only managed one bucket full of 'Nelson's Revenge' ale, that was fun, apart from when the bucket lid popped off under the fermenting pressure and filled the wife's handbag with smelly beer ;D
