Heh, if you scroll back a few pages, you'll see I'm now divorced lol And yeah, I remember the days of knocking it down, loading the bricks into the Chevy and down into my neighbour's field as hardstanding for her horses. Apparently a ton and a half of bricks makes even my Chevy sit down on it's springs....!! Oh, and cheers for the lock info, I was hoping it would be something that easy Been re reading this thread. Amazed you have survived the build. Do you remember this day ? So much progress since then. Nicola says you must have a very understanding wife......

I know what you mean - I hate paying for something that I could otherwise do myself. Plus I enjoy doing it, I learn from it and it's like a personal challenge to me. I'm the same with jobs in the house and on the cars, if someone else can do it, if it needs no specialist equipment then I don't see why I can't! I sometimes feel like a freak, (Don't agree with me either) But looking at this thread, I am really pleased to see there are other people out there who get on and do stuff. Glad you got the wood. As said above, any decent locksmith type will supply same key locks.

Thankfully mine was very amicable, and through good fortune we had a second house too, so although I did lose a house, I still had this one spare! lol It's also now fully occupied with my current partner and her 2 kids (and my daughter thankfully quite often!). Although she doesn't understand my choice in vehicles, she knows it's my hobby and supports me (well, maybe not with the latest Range Rover I bought but you can't have everything lol). Good luck for the future, and reading some of the posts you've done, you seem well suited to each other, hope it all works out this time

Spoke to a locksmith yesterday, asked him about your locks.
He says it is easy to make all the same key , go for 5 lever and ask what the current flavour of the month is with insurance companies.
Seems it is Chubb at the moment.

Well, I've finally had a couple of hours to work on the garage, and I've made my first doorframe Mortise and tenon in each corner, allied with some glue and it's good and sturdy. Happy days! Granted it's missing a few essentials such as the stops for the door and rebate for the lock etc. but they will be done when the door is made. I'm going to let it set in position overnight, then take it back out, paint it with clear wood preserver (which takes 5 days to fully dry apparently!), then I'll see about fixing it in, painting it and sealing it. It's another step in the right direction, and my first bit of carpentry too

Great to see you're nearly there. Hope to start on mine this spring/summer. Been busy at work recently so a bit more cash will be available.

Well, another few weeks have passed and there's a little more progress! I had a couple of spare days to take off from work, so as well as wallpapering a ceiling (on my own... that was fun!), I thought I'd have a bash at making a door. And so I did! Made the outer 'frame' first using a similar technique to the frame, except I did a 'blind' mortise on these - I reasoned that every joint that was open to the elements was a risk, and confirmed this by looking at my own exterior and interior doors in the house (exterior doors have blind mortise and tenon joints, interior doors have full-width mortises/tenons). I did the mortising with the aide of a flat 13mm bit in my pillar drill and a hammer and *very* sharp chisel I then routed out a ledge for the T+G infill pieces to sit on and hey presto, we have this : Then, when all glued together, pretty damned solid and resting in place: Despite how solid the doors already are, I'm still going to brace the back as I've already bought the wood to do it. I'm also going to drill and dowel the corner joints (from the back, so it's invisible from the front) to prevent any future slippage/twistage. Overall I'm pretty pleased with them, and to say it's the first 'proper' woodworking I've ever done I've done a good job.

Great build you've got going here. Have you thought about security for the windows? What about external security bars? External are an instant deterrant but can be unsightly so you could do internal ones. Seriously, it's something to think about. I never did until my Dad's new build barn got broken into and all his brand new Stihl garden equipment got pinched! Turned out to be a group of gypsies hitting outbuildings in the area, bastards!

What are you planning for the big door? Are you going to make similar wooden doors or going for an up and over type?
I need to make a new set of doors for my garage as the existing ones are rotten in places.

Yeah, I'll be making side hinged doors for the front, I don't want to lose any height given that my Chevy will be pretty damn big when it's done!
I plan on making the doors in a traditional style, with 2 rows of 4 or 5 windows at the top on each side... Got to get the Merc out the way first though, so I've got room to make 'em! lol

Massively impressed, definately consider a dedicated alarm system and secure it as best you can.
Window bars are good, one trick I know of is to bolt the bars over the window, then add blobs of weld to all the faces of the bolts. Means you cant get sockets on it to remove them without grinding the weld blobs off.

Security will remain a tight lipped secret, I shan't be blabbing about what I am doing over the internet, and anything I do will be as concealed and well hidden as possible...
Thanks for the ideas tho guys ;D
