I bought an absolute nail of a Monkey Bike a few years back and set about restoring it. Here's how it looked when I bought it and this is what it looked like new... The frame needed some repair work I wanted to build a custom bike so I lowered the seat and chopped the bars I built it up rough and fabricated an exhaust system for it Custom front and rear lights. Here it is complete and running. I modified the engine to 85cc with a ported head, larger carb, tweaked cam and manual clutch conversion MOT time! It's really small and just about ridable with my 6 foot frame. It will do 50mph I got it registered and took it on a Monkey Bike run round the Isle of Wight Me! I did a few hundred miles to check it's all in the right shape. Then I stripped it down to restore it Off to London Chroming and a professional paint job and now the satisfying bit; rebuilding it all shiny and new Finished! I won a trophy! and took it to Belgium I've got four other little Monkeys Thanks for reading! - Ferg

It's still a bit of a "but it doesn't work" project. Saying that, maybe someone here will know why

Now that has made me smile.
Amazingly, regardless of size... it is all in the details.
Great finish, and a Cheeky Monkey at that.

Try asking on our forum at www.MonkeyRun.co.uk or of course eBay. You'll be faced with the Honda VS Chinese conundrum Some of my other bikes: My first build. Made from a Chaly with a Dax frame Chinese copy. Champ CM90, now 137cc. I did John O'Groats to Land's End on this Turbocharged Dax I'm currently building More pics of the Dax here Ferg

That turboed dax is mad as a balloon! Where did the dinky little turbo come from? America. After many enquiries trying to find the world's smallest turbocharger, I bought a Mitsubishi TD02. Runs and has been on the road but needs more work to make it work properly Ferg

Perhaps you can answer this: the Chinese Monkeys are amazingly cheap for a brand new bike, about £600 OTR. Even I could be tempted. But just how well screwed together are they? Are the engines made of chocolate and is the paint made with icing sugar or are they approaching the quality of the original?

I'd been looking for a Monkey, but they were very expensive. As an alternative, I picked this up from Ebay the other day: It was sold as 'hard to start', but less than an hour of fettling means it now starts first kick. I'll try to tidy it up and get it on the road for spring time. I've discovered that it's a high performance spec, 2hp "30mph" version ;D. Unfortunately it's only a single-speed, so there's little room for improvement. An engine transplant is planned if I can find a suitable donor....( hint hint)

Are the engines made of chocolate and is the paint made with icing sugar or are they approaching the quality of the original? They are screwed together fairly poorly, the engines are OKish but can be a bit chocolatey and the paint is reasonable (rough on Dax frames) but they do get you on the road and you can tweak and upgrade as you see fit. The Chinese bikes are better specified though. 108cc VS 49cc. Disc brake VS drum. 50mph VS 30mph

hey Goose!! the earlier chinese stuff was a lot worse than the later stuff seems to be.. I had nightmares with my bike as you well know but people on the scene with the later bikes don't seem to suffer half the troubles now which is good !!! that trail is even sweeter in the flesh though !
