The stuff of legend! Love this sort of thing. How much is a lathe of that size typically? I'd love to have a workshop one day filled with that sort of machinery. Best of luck with all of it, especially interested in the backyard casting! Brilliant!

stealthstylz - Mine ran me at about £400... but that was for several reasons!... You could get them cheaper but it is all dependant on the size you want.. HUGE lathes are dirt cheap... as not many hobby machinists want a huge lathe... same reasoning behind my milling machine... its quite a bit bigger than most hobbyists.. and also if my workshop turns out to be quite well sorted i would be happy to do machining for people... street - backyardmetalcasting.com Great site that will make you try it out.... I had a big night of melting last night and ime totally out of aluminium... but i have such a grin on my face , its far too much fun! No pictures AGAIN as i keep forgetting to take the camera!

No problem RE: the lathe. Cheers for the welcome!
Definately looks like you are on track to getting your workshop sorted out. I have a small bench mounted lathe that I'm trying to get a coolant scavenge setup running with - the bench it's on is steel with a large lip around the edge so should be ideal.
Have you swapped to single phase motors, or are they single phase machines? Or, of course, do you have 3 phase electrics?

I love back yard workshops. My mates Dad has got nigh-on a full engineers workshop in specially built outbuildings behind the house, He also bought a spark erosion machine a while back and said he can make Carburettors with it!! He bought it out of necessity because he cant find the parts to complete his MERLIN (!!) engined roll-royce silver cloud. You are bonkers though

tobyk - The lathe is single phase (converted via butchering...not on my account though, and i am still in the process re-conditioning it), but it works so its ok!, the mill is 3phase, but i plan to get a inverter for that... as there are three motors, so it would be daft to convert to single phase. Butterz - i was VERY close to buying an EDM machine on ebay the other day... for £12.50!, but it was in caerphilly, and ive done that journey from manchester before... and the amount of depressing grey villages i went through made me vow never to go back again! and the fact my electricity bill would have gone from ridiculous to incredibly high!
Most people i have found that have home workshops fit into 3 catagories: 1. Too poor to buy the parts from a manufacturer...so they make them 2. FAR too much spare time 3. People just addicted to making their own things...
I fit squarely into the 1st, but i also fit into #3.

Picture time This is how small it actually is! That's from eye level on a 6ft bloke! it really is as HUGE as it looks! In other news BONUS! My dad's dental chair finally conked out after 25 years, yielding me about 100kg of cast aluminium, and a couple of strong hydraulic rams! pretty chuffed!

....got DELCAM, if it's of any use. It's great fun - import your part, define a sensible milling strategy, walk into the labs with a floppy disc and then anything from 4 hours to 4 weeks later you've got your part all milled out! Magic! I do have Solidworks and Cosmos Floworks but not looked to see if I've got Solidcam. I'll have a look Anyway, OT those are some great bits of kit you've picked up there........Fantastic stuff!
