Got this as a non runner from a site clearer today. It is a Suffolk Mowers "Colt" However the motors are bought from outside, as new ones come with what looks like Briggs and Stratton motors. Yhis is not one. Any ideas what proprietary motor this is, and where to start looking at why it is not starting? Has fuel, new sparkplug. Want to clean and "retore" it. Model : 24A

Brian.... you old codger.... shows your age.
Just added pic of spec sheet, but close up does not work so well after a loooong brandy and coke, even with a piece of 2x2 as support for my hands.

Nitrous it. I can just see it now, you horizontal behind it, holding on for grim death as it reduces your lawn to a haphazard myriad of strips of bare earth.

Sad Nahh, I am equal on that score, sometimes we just collect more useless info than others. Any idea on the vintage of the Model 24 A ??

Reading through the history on oldlawnmowers it looks like that's 1960's vintage (Dad's was a 'Super Punch', he bought it in about '71)...24A is the model designation for the whole mower, not just the engine. I'd like to bet it's got some stale petrol in it. Strip/clean the carb then boll0ck some Easy-Start through it, should do the trick (though try to remember not to smoke a cigar while messing with that stuff)

Did not get a grass catch drum with it, but will go back to see if it is around tomorrow, We need more hlidays to do stuff like this.

God that brings back memories
My dad had one of them
All summer he'd use it
Leave in in a shed all winter
Then i'd get the job of getting it going again in the spring
From memory problems I usually had to resolve in order of how frequent
Stale petrol Sooted up plug - he never did use full throttle (same for cars too) Air filter caked with dirt and old grass Varnished/jelly'd up carb jets and float needles Oil like treakle Gummed up rings leading to no compression Rust on valve seats leading to ^
If none of the above is found they start fine and run very well

I have one of these somewhere too. It's a very simple piece of kit, a sidevalve, no gearbox, just a centrifugal clutch and chain drive. If you get a spark it's probably a cacked-up carb, strip it, clean it, give it new petrol. I once got a Briggs and Stratton started with a tank of stale fuel by adding half a bottle of methylated spirits to the tank. This gave it some volatiles that were missing from the stale petrol and allowed it to start. Lots of smoke though

Just back from the site where it came from.
Got the grass catcher box as well !!!! Result.
Will fiddle with it next weekend, as I am currently prepping for an exam on Thursday, and have been doing everything in my power to procrastinate.
Thanks for all the advice and tips guys.

When i was at school i worked with a mate at his dads scrapyard and we had a pick up come in with 5 of these things in the back,so we got them going by soaking the carb in some cleaner and they ran a treat.A couple of weeks later we found what we think was neat alcohol in a bottle so being the idiots that we are we got one and ran it on it,it rev'ed its bolocks before exploding and firing the silencer directly at my hip with such force it knocked me off my feet.I was rolling around in agony with my mate rolling around next to me laughing so hard he had an astma attack. ;DAhh good times.

I took the engine off one of these years ago when i was 12-13 and fitted it to a kids scooter i found on the central reservation of the dual carrigeway near my house. The fuel tank was a washer bottle from a ford and i ran it on paint thinners. It just had a front brake and the rear brake lever was the throttle. It was a death trap looking back but plenty of fun!

I took the engine off my dads dead one when I was about 8, stripped off the carb, cleaned it, took off the head, and then put it all in the bin its the first tinkering I ever did on my "own" engine

I had the motor off one of them for the first powered go kart I built myself. Must've been 12 years old. Got my mate to put his finger in the end of the HT lead while I pulled it over to check if it had a spark.......... It did! You've never seen someone involuntarily break dance like it!

Picked up by young Richard tonight, making its way back to Wales.
His missus is waiting in suspense.
