Quick update.
Ive had the Audi back from the garage for a couple of weeks now. They only took a month do do a clutch and when I got it back the car was COVERED in greasy hand marks and grime. A real mess. Took me hours to get it all off. On the upside after copious amounts of T cut ive found that the car is infact WHITE and not GREY. With a machine mop it would look glorious.
The clutch pedal is now softer than a kittens gonads and its made a real difference to the driving experience. I think the clutch was never right from the day I picked it up, it was just waiting for the right time to fail completley.
Today I steam cleaned the engine bay off at work. When I bought the car the engine breathers were all sludged up and oil mist had gradualry covered the engine bay with a film of oil which had in turn attracted dust and dirt. Watching the gleaming white paintwork appear as I powered away was a real boost. Should make working on the engine a much more enjoyable experience!
I'm slowly working out a course of action with this old bus. Its almost there mechanically so I think its time to start tyrning my attention to the bodywork. The bottom of the passenger doors need a bit of filler and paint and I need to fit a new drivers wing I have in the spare bedroom. The passenger front wing also needs a bit of de-rusting and paint. I'm getting it together... slowly!
Pic update to follow.

Just read this from the start, love these old things.
After reading your first post asking if there was anything that'd up the power a little, the first thing I would have suggested was an injection head, they run 2mm larger exhaust valves and a less laid back cam, so make a nice difference.
As said, mayo is very normal with these engines, every now and then I start thinking my HG is on its way out, but it always go's away after the next long drive without fail.

Thats what its got on now. When the cam belt fell off I bought a recon golf GTI head that had been ported and polished. Transformed the engine, it revs much more freely and the car feels alot more peppy now. Especially when running on petrol (not gas, although it feels quicker on the gas too). I guess with an engine that produces so little power from the start then every extra BHP can make a difference. I'm thinking of sticking an injection system on it at some point. Apparently its not too difficult to put a digifant system on from a Golf or something. According to Scaryoldcortina.

Thanks for the compliment, I think youll find I'm funny and witty ALL the time though. Was this the Avant Quattro you were thinking of buying? If so I was tempted by it too. £200, just out of storage. It got crushed in the end! Anyway, heres the newly steam cleaned under bonnet area... Looks good eh? Its a shame I didnt take a before shot as it really did look grotty under there. The bottom of the engine is still caked in grime though so looks like ll be spending some more time with the steam cleaner. I may even take it up on the ramps. I'm going to be breaking this Audi 100 up over the next few days, Ill use a few bits to upgrade my Audi, bits like the front bumper with fog lights and overriders will go on straight away, as will the nice leather steering wheel. The rest will be put into storage. You never know when your gonna need a new headrest! The engine and box will also be removed. If its not sold Ill keep that too, I'm looking into the possibility of perhaps maybe converting mine to 5 pot power? The plan is to unbolt the subframe and lift the body off so Ive got everything. Theres a good chance ill need to swap the driveshafts and suspension though, meaning ill have convert it to 5 stud hubs. Too much of a ball ache really. If the original shafts fit the 5 pot box then that will make things much easier. Like I said its a big maybe! As you can see, theres ALOT to swap over. Probably never happen.. On a final note I saw this today, A Daewoo Matiz with an Allegro wheel on! Well, I thought it was noteworthy. Ok, maybe it wasnt.

It belonged to someone over on the classic Audi forum. I don't think it had anything wrong with it either, maybe a couple of tyres for MOT. It had been put in storage for a couple of years and they guy needed the room. I was thinking of getting it but I already had my work cut out with my own avant. The fella said he would crush it if nobody had it within a month, nobody thought he would do it, but he did! Heres the actual thread, How much do I wish id bought this! www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1638

Quick update, mostly to bump this to the top of the board for a bit- its very hard to find to update sometimes. Not that much has gone on TBH.
Basically its been a pretty good relaible daily/workhorse. Theres been a few problems with the clutch again, the cable seemingly stretching to excess (again) I started to think the clutch pedal was slipping (again), meaning that the pedal box would have to come out (world of pain) but it turned out the large iron spacer had been inserted onto the cable upside down, meaning that with every push on the clutch pedal it was slipping deeper and deeper into its conical shaped hole. With this removed and inserted in the correct manner everything was hunkey dorey.. for about 3 days.
Yesterday the wife shuddered home in a right mood, apparently the Audi had cut out 5675 times (approx) on the way to work and on the way home. Basically she was pretty annoyed. When I got chance I opened the Audis bonnet and found the carburettor had fallen off. The rubber gasket/base had perished to such an extent that the carb had completely detatched and was just resting on the manifold. Talk about an air leak, I'm amazed Mrs Lankytim made it home at all! Shes so annoyed with me for "making" her drive that "thing" to work that shes threatening to make me buy a modern.
Ive ordered a new gasket from GSF and will be fitting it on Saturday (if it turns up, PLEASE GSF!!) So the Audi should be back in business ASAP.
Happy days.
P.S the O/S boot area keeps filling with water as the inner arch has rotted around the filler cap. More welding for next MOT. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.

Progress!
The parts arrived from GSF on Friday. I say arrived, they tried to deliver it but as the box was too big for the letter box I had to collect it from the local Business post depot- which is actually further away than the local GSF. Kinda defeated the object of paying to have them delivered. I should have really thought about the whole delivery thing more thouroughly TBH..
Anyway, got the carb flange/gimp gasket and tootled off in the Volvo to the grandparent-in-laws to fit it. (the Audi has been abandoned outside their house for most of this week) The old gasket came away easily from the manifold and carb and I was all set up for a nice 10 min easy fix until I found the new gasket was the wrong type... The carb is mounted by 4 studs while the new gasket only holes for 3 studs. curse word.
Then I remembered the 100 had the carb from an Audi 80 fitted. D-O-H!
I quickly drove round to the local GSF and managed to get them to let me in despite the fact they had been closed for 20 mins (good old GSF!). They agreed to refund me but said the gasket was dealer only... although "the old boy" up the road may have one. Drove round to him, he didnt even know what the part was, yet alone what car it was from. He told me to try a local VAG specialist, flew round there and he couldnt help (although hes a real classic fan, I may have to use him in the future) Just as I was leaving he asked me to hang on as he rang Euro car spares as they *might* have one. Turned out they did!
Drove round to Euro car spares and finally got my gasket! Fitted it in 10 mins and the Audis running pretty sweetly, although the gas needs to be set up again as it had been tuned to compensate for the constant air leak from the knackered carb gasket. Its on the road atleast, although it may not be as easy to rebuild Mrs Lankytims confidence on the old barge.
Moral of the story? Its sometimes best to buy stuff in person so you can check its really what you want!

Broke down today and stranded the wife in the evening rush hour on the A500. Got it running but no idea whats wrong. Its something carb/gas connected. Engine mounts seem to have collapsed too. Run out of patients this time. I have zero spare cash now too, plus I need something relaible for the wife to drive!
Time to but this blighted banger out of its misery.

Ok, quick update time! The more dilligent forumites may have noticed that I didnt actually go through with my threat to scrap the Avant. After a walk around the block to calm my nerves and a good nights sleep I decided the damn thing has cost me too much to simply strip a few bits off and crush it. After a bit of tinkering with the LPG system it was found the fuel cut valve off was playing up due to a dodgy connection, basically the engine was trying to run on LPG and petrol at the same time, which it cant do. After giving all the connections a good seeing to with copper grease normal service was restored. I also decided to move the valve closer to the carb so theres less petrol for the engine to use up before I can switch over to LPG, it could take a good 5 minutes to do this before, now it takes a minute or so. Much better! Since then the old barge has been doing pretty well for itself, starting without fail and getting from A to B with the minimum of fuss. Even Mrs Lankytim is starting to enjoy it. Ive found the best course of action with this old Audi is when its working O.K is to JUST LEAVE IT ALONE, as whenever I go near it with a spanner or screwdriver it seems to break down. Its running great at the moment so apart from servicing I'm not doing any more work to it until it needs it. So far this stratergy is working a treat! The faded and sun-damaged paintwork was recently treated to a good mopping and polish session thanks to Coxy of ClassicAudi fame (cheers bud, really appreciated it!) and the Avants new lusterous sheen has already attracted positive comments from serveral members of the public. The improvement has raised its profile from borderline banger-racer to coveted classic (maybe). Is nice to have a car I can wax up and admire! A couple of weeks ago the Avant was put through its most arduous test yet, transporting a rolling shell from Shrewsbury up to Irvine in Scotland. A round trip of around 600 miles. I'm glad to say its new found reliability didnt falter and I got there and back without a problem, bar a soaked coil causing a misfire which cleared up when it was wiped down. On the longer gradients of the M6 I was down to 40MPH and 3rd gear, the 1800cc engine having its work cut out, apologies to the perplexed lorry drivers who overtook me on the hills, only for me to speed past on the flat a few minutes later only to have to opertake me again on the next hill! Prize for anyone who knows the type of car thats on the trailer... No its not an MG, or a Triumph, or a Daimpler prototype that your Grandad built... (hopefully the above pic is the right way up, PB is playing silly buggars again) The Audi is currently garaged during cold and wet weather (i.e all the time) as the heather matrix was bypassed when it sprung a leak during the summer. No heater means no windscreen de-misting which was starting to cause a bit of a hazard first thing in the morning. Several near-misses convinced me that Mrs Lankytim would be beter off using the Volvo for work. Next job will be to replace the matrix with a good one ive got in the shed.... Oh the joy of dashboard removal...

If Datsun 1500 1964>1968 equates to Datsun Fairlady then yes you are correct! Sorry, you don't really get a prize..
Its not mine, unfortunately and I don't know much about it other than it was imported from California fairly recently. Its covered in surface rust but no actual grot, I don't think any welding is needed anyway. If you saw an MGB with that much surface rust youd expect it to snap in half when you opened the door.
The Datsun is now with its new owner up in Scotland where its being restored. Should be good when its finished!

Took a pic of the Audi in the snow yesterday so thought id may aswell post it, seeing as I havent posted anything recently. We had about 4-5 inches in less than an hour, frigging hell, it was like the apocalypse! Cars being abandoned after getting stuck, mass hysteria, looting of shops e.t.c. Anyway, the old crate has made it to 2010 and 157k- quite an achievement I recon, seeing how many times its been on deaths door. The things still running pretty well too. Its been pressed into service over the winter period as its so cheap to run on gas. I find it physically painful filling up a car with petrol! The salt laden slush weve all been dealing with recently hasnt been too kind to the rusty areas of bodywork. The front wings are now getting pretty crusty with areas turing into weetabix around the arches and the slightly rotten bit above the filler pipe inside the rear wing is steadily growing in size. Its amazing how corrosive this toxic slush is! To repair this area the fuel filer neck awill need to be removed, and probably the fuel tank too. No problem of course, as it runs on gas. I'm half expecting the tank to be rotten and although I have a brand new spare in the shed I'm toying with the idea of doing away with the petrol tank alltogether and filling the area with additional LPG tanks. The existing 60 litre tank only gives a range of 250 mileish and it would be very easy to add another 60 or 90 litre tank in place of the petrol tank. It would make running out of fuel a bit of a disaster though as you cant top LPG up from a gerry can and LPG filling stations arn't as common as petrol stations. It is a pain having such a short range on LPG though! I could fit a much smaller fuel tank in place of the original tank, say a gallon or so but this would probably need fabricating. It all depends on what I can be bothered to sort I guess. Oh yeah, after enduring sub-zero temperatures all winter and absolutley freezing my knackers off I decided to sod it and reconnect the leaking heater matrix. Turns out I was wrong and its wasnt leaking at all. The water in the passenger footwell was entering though a bad door seal and not via the matrix. Ive fixed the door seal and the steamed up windows that blighted the Audi seem to be a thing of the past. I cant believe I had to scrape the inside of the windows and there was no need. What a dumbass Ah well, one less job to do. Top of my wishlist ATM is still a new radiator, the old one is totally shot and needs to be recored. Ive had a quote of £90 with isnt too bad I think, seeing as nobody can find the rad listed an any parts catalouges anywhere and the core will have to be specially made. It will be a nice copper job too. A small Audi related mini-project I'm doing while its too cold outside to do anything else is converting a 5 stud space-saver to 4 stud. Theres only room for a spacesaver and the 4 stud variety are impossible to find- it has to be exactly the right profile or it just wont fit in the cubby hole. I know this sounds incredibly dangerous but I'm positive I can it work safely. The wheels are spigot mounted meaning the wheel nuts simply hold the wheel flat against the hub and don't hold the wheel in place as such. A bit of drilling, grinding and the addition of a 4 stud wheel centre welded over the original 5 stud hub should give a satisfactory outcome. If anyone can think of a reason why this is an amazingly stupid thing to do feel free to post!

Ive been looking for the last couple of years on and off and I cant find any! Ive tried spacesavers with the correct PCD from other Audis but they just don't fit in the cubbyhole in the side of the boot. The Audi 100 has a giant well in the boot floor, made out of plastic. All the ones ive seen in breakers have had a full size spare inserted in the well and the spacesaver thrown away. My 100 did have a full size spare, but its been displaced by the LPG tank.
