Well its been a long winter of discontent and the after the Passat just died on me down the road I rolled it into the garage and thats where it has stayed for the last 4 months. I sold the teledials on eBay so its back on the steels. The reason it died was ignition related and after re-gapping the points it fired up, nice and simple. All is still not well with the engine but hopefully I can iron out the niggles, if not I have another 1500 lump I might chuck in. Its sitting a bit low at the front and is undriveable due to me chopping too much off the stock springs trying to stance the teledials. I have just ordered some -60mm uprated items that are B2 Audi 80 fitment. I am pretty sure the fronts will fit but the rears are no use to me and at £125 it could be a pricey experiment! Pics when they arrive but I do have a plan B up my sleeve. I have after much deliberation bought some brand new wheels and they should arrive tomorrow so will get some pics up. I also had a play with fitting a MK1 Golf GTi duckbill spoiler but will need a fair bit of re-profiling and chopping to make it look right.

The delights of old builds cropping up for newbies to the forum only to be left hanging when early pics of the rebuild have disappeared.
Cracking looking motor though. I'm guessing the Passey would be a relation of the Audi 100 coupe. An example of which I let slip through my fingers some time back. Difference being I am a dreamer when it comes to rebuilds whereas macca and countless others on here are doers.
You sirs, are my heroes.

Yeah the early pics have dissapeared as my friends hosting site was hacked, hopefully back soon. I still have them all on my hard drive might upload to Photobucket.
I am getting to the stage where I am starting to prefer it standard but all mods will be reversible as I chop and change my mood. I am kicking myself for butchering the front seats to mount the tombstones on but to be honest they were wrecked. I am on the lookout for some new seats, either something out of a MK1 Golf or Scirocco or some tidier tombstones.
Wheels should arrive today but its gonna be too late to get it ready for Wheels Day which is a shame. I have gone for SSP 5.5x15 Polished/Detailed Fooks as I cant afford the real thing and the aim was always to fit that style of wheel. I have a set of 165/50/15 tyres so they will be fitted for now but I might go a bit beefier at the rear.
I am considering selling it this year if the right price is offered so if anyone is genuinely interested send me a message.

Passats still looking great, shame about the front being too low! but the rears are no use to me I might be able to make use of the rears if you decide to sell them.

Well I had a hunch the Audi B2 lowered springs would fit but they don't I can send them back so not totally out of pocket. I have been offered some struts which have been modified to work as coilovers. Problem is that I would still need to source the springs and top mounts. It is the ultimate conversion but will be about £200 all in and will take time getting the parts. So what I am going to do is try MK2 Golf -40mm springs with Golf top mounts, hopefully that will work - anyone got some they want to sell? Well my Fooks have arrived and they are very good quality. It a shame they are detailed slightly strange but they will do for now. Only got two tyres fitted as had to buy a couple more from mytyres. Went with 165/50/15 Nankangs as they are cheap and look good on a relatively thin rim. I might have a play with larger sizes in the future for a more aircooled stance. I went to wheels day in the daily as the Passat has its front suspension in bits. Bought some slightly illegal pressed black and silver plates to match in the black and silver theme Oh and put one of the Fooks on the rear using 30mm adapters. Hopefully get the pesky front suspension sorted this week.

Lovely. Glad to see the wheels becoming reality for it. Wow 165/50R15. Not used to seeing tyres that small. More sidewall on the back can look good.

This is a great looking car and I think the mods suit it really well. Youo can't go wrong on Fuchs alloys in my mind, and cheap or not they look the part. Suspension sounds like a real PITA, but I guess you might be better off getting some custom coilovers made up, at least you'll be able to go up and down as the mood takes you without dismantling the suspension every time. Easy to say I guess, but expensive I would think. I can rememeber nearly buying one of these whne I lived in Germany many years ago! I always thought it would make a good Audi Quattro lookalike I bought a Cortina instead and that was that for about 10 years

Dude really strange that the springs didn't fit. I fitted B2 fronts to my B1 as a straight swap... The drop was all wrong they were boxed as minus 60mm but it was a lot more. They are GT Cupline from Sausagebay.

B2 springs will fit the later facelifted B1s as they are pigtailed, but they don't fit the early cars such as this one... Looks awesome on the fooks, good work!

Ok a bit more slow progress due to waiting on parts and the pants weather. I purchased a pair of -30mm Golf MK2 Springs from eBay along with the smaller spring caps. The Golf springs internal diameter is a touch too small to seat perfectly on the bottom cup but I fitted them anyway. I bolted it all back together on one side then took a few rubbish iphone pics. It needs to come down another 10mm at the front at least so will either lop a coil off or try lowered spring caps. Slowly getting there now! Also thanks to MrJ I have purchased a Raid steering wheel hub adaptor Just need to find a nice aftermarket wheel, current fave is the Momo Prototipo but its quite pricey, what do you think?

The Prototipo are good looking wheels - I've got one fitted to my Escort (picked it up from an auto jumble for £5 - it's the black type though) I think the plates really do set it off just wondering what it would look like with a set of german pressed ones... Hmmm.

... Just need to find a nice aftermarket wheel, current fave is the Momo Prototipo but its quite pricey, what do you think? I think it looks a bit similar to the Passat GLI original steering wheel. Why not get one of these and ask a car upholsterer or saddler to make it a bit thicker and leather-ishier? I did have a TS Pedrini wheel but it did not fit due to the very early B1's having a different sized spline. I will go for the Momo if I cant find anything at Beaulieu later this month.

A lot of the pictures in this thread have disappeared - any chance of putting them up again? The original hosting site was hacked but when its sorted back out they should become visable again. I have just been through my hard drive and uploaded loads of photos to photobucket, pics are here: photobucket.com/1974VWPassat
