its worth checking the head bolts as they can bottom out in the block which means the gasket is not torqued up properly, screw a bolt into each hole and check the remainder of the bolt showing and compare it the head depth, get some blue hylomar sealer in aerosol form for the head gasket its great stuff and easy to use

i'm dead against "skimming as a matter of course", removing metal should be last resort! deffo measure everthing up though (or checked for flatness if you cant) and the head bolt measuring is a good shout
no sealant if its a composite head gasket though

we all skim the heads and deck the blocks to get the compression up on these engines its one of the recognised performance mods, Vauxhall use a sealer on the gaskets and its common to use a pre-squished head gasket eg a used one as it saves having to re-torque the head once its been run up to normal temperature

Heads back from being skimmed and I'm ready for round two, head had 8 thou taken off it and was slightly warped. Another weekend of putting it back together now.  |

Good work, if the head was warped the skimming should sort your headgasket woes! Hope it runs sweet once back together!

If you sell it you really will regret it - so don't do it. God knows it's so frustrating and annoying when you spend ages on something and it doesn't quite go to plan. Perhaps take a break from it for a few days and go back to it.
Is there nobody local who can help out, perhaps even drop the car off to a local back street garage if there is a recommended / decent one near to you ?
If you sell it on here, someone will snap it up and within a day or two it'll be running perfectly, it'll be on here and you'll be like "oh my god why did I sell it".
Seriously, don't give up on it. Your call though of course.

Sorry to read you haven't managed to fix this yet. I've having problems with our daily Astra leaking oil from the crank rear oil seal, will be taking the engine out again in a week or so for the 4th time and I still can't work out why it keeps dripping.
Has this got locating dowels or tubes in the top of the block ? Just wondering if they have bottomed out as you have had to skim the head a fair bit.

I've having problems with our daily Astra leaking oil from the crank rear oil seal, will be taking the engine out again in a week or so for the 4th time and I still can't work out why it keeps dripping. Has this got locating dowels or tubes in the top of the block ? Just wondering if they have bottomed out as you have had to skim the head a fair bit. Hi, you may need a double lip seal. I fitted a new rear crank seal to my stag which leaked again, then a friend gave me a Viton(I think) double lipped seal, no more leaks |

Ok head of again and still non the wiser to why it's leaking . Block looks good with no cracks and I've put a straight edge across it and it's not to my eyes warped.
Going to try and find some new head bolts and try that next and see it that works.
Not giving up in it now too many people telling me to get it sorted out properly.

Try putting the head on without the gasket and check to see if there are any gaps under it. I've seen cars with locating dowels that are too long cause the head not to sit properly. Could be a problem with the head bolts if they are close to the bottom of the threads in the block as well.
At least you will end up with an interesting car when it's fixed mine is just a boring daily !

Heads been on and off again for the past two weeks and I've tried shorter head bolts and still the same problem.
Next step is try a better make head gasket and see if that solves the problem.
No other things to update but will as soon as I've sorted it out

Check its not leaking from the inlet manifold as the water will follow the line of the head gasket round the head and then drip of on the exhaust side?

Ive checked that and it is the side on the exhaust manifold side. Going to try a payen head gasket next if not another engine if I can find one.

Ok happy new year guys.
Quick update, engine is running now but I can not get the timing set properly and it runs soooo rough. Had the dizzy in and out as many times as ive had the head off and can not get it spot on.
Going to try again this weekend and if not I am going to bite the bullet and say the engine is fubar and try to source another engine.
If I can not get a cheap decent 2300 slant I am going to consider doing a redtop conversion in her, didn't want to but slant engines are quite hard to find now and I don't want to go through getting one and finding its as bad as the one I am taking out.
So if any body has a cheap 2300 kicking about or a redtop conversion going cheap let me know as I'm desperate to get this car back on the road now.
