Rescued from the depths of page 7.
I´ve ordered some decent weather for you so how about some new holes in the Merc or some shiney bits ;D
Any chance on an update Mr. Benz?

Thanks . I'm getting back in the saddle today. The fortnight of crappy weather has left me with mojo failure. Couple that with my brother breaking the angle grinder, being skint, running out of sheet steel and having a mountain of "work work" to do, and it means the poor girl has been sitting there all forlorn and still full of holes, with a big space where a turbo should be. I'm trying to fire up my enthusiasm again though! Starting off gently. I'm moving the battery to the boot to creat some space.

Rover 825 diesels have a nice size intercooler,or if you can find one a land rover discovery is a good size too.

Sounds like a nice little project! Haven't long swapped the ct26 turbo on my mr2 for the ct20b. The ct26 seems to come in a few variants (supra, mr2 and even landcruiser diesels). Not sure what the differences are but it's known as a pretty decent turbo that runs out of puff at about 270-280bhp on the mr2's. The main issue is with the ceramic shafts etc letting go. On the intercooler front the stock mr2 unit is quite small as it's fitted in the rear. In that location it's not ideal for big power and a lot of people change it for an XS power kit for around £170. People then sell the stock ones on ebay and on www.imoc.co.uk for not a lot. I reckon if space is short it should fit the bill fitted up front (i.e. in the airflow.) Have a look at the td developments website for a £15 mechanical boost controller that should give you a nice bit of bosst control also. JB

Thanks for the intercooler suggestions guys! I've seen Rover 800 ones and they are nice and compact. I'll look out for an MR2 item too as that will match up nicely with the turbo. Interesting stuff about the CT26 too JasonB, I think mine is from a Supra as it's a single-entry one and I think the MR2 has a twin entry. In an ideal world I'd have the MR2-spec one, but beggars can't be choosers! And I reckon I'll not need to worry about it running out of puff as I'll not be nearing those power levels! ;D I'm reckoning on 150 - 160BHP. The last dyno test I had, years ago, showed I was getting 125BHP at the flywheel. That's with a couple of simple mods - K&N, binned the viscous fan, free flow back box. Not much, but 30BHP over stock. That mechanical boost controller looks ideal! I have been worried about complicating things too much with electronic ignition - I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible to give myself a chance of finisshing it! ;D I'll definitely look into that! Tiny weeny little update coming soon...

As always, great encouragement from you guys! 8-)Lord knows I need it at the moment... Bodywork is on hold as the weather just hasn't been kind, but I've done a few odds and ends, just to try to kick-start my mojo. Like you say Nathan, summer is coming and I need my ride back! I collected a few bits - new grinder, new sill and some more schutz... (Collecting stuff can be done whilst it's raining. ;D) I've been doing some work on the rear end too. I decided I wanted to move the battery tray to the boot. This will make more space, plus I can get rid of the rusty, dented battery tray in the engine bay! Years ago I salvaged a battery cable from my bro's Rover P6 before it went to the scrapyard. I dug it out and routed it through the car... ^ Here it is going through a handily placed grommet in the trans tunnel, where it meets the starter motor. I haven't attached a terminal end to it yet as I lack the crimping tool / massive soldering iron, but it's an easy job I can do later. Whilst I was poking around in the boot I noticed a lot of water, and a little surface rust. This is because of the boot seal... ^ Nasty! It's been like that for years, letting water in. Eventually it'll kill my boot floor and I've had just about enough welding to last me a lifetime, so out it goes... ^ ...and in goes a better one I pulled off a W115 down the scrappy. It was an easy ten minute job that is hopefully going to fire up my enthusiasm again! Despite the rain today, I have been busy! I found a brand new radiator down the scrappy, attached to a Mercedes W124 3.2 straight six. My radiator has been running with a load of radweld in it plugging up a leak for a year, so isn't in the best health. It's not a stock item - I changed it for a W126 280 rad years ago, and I thought the W124 item was the same, but it's not as tall. ^ Here's my current set-up... what a mess! I'll be tidying all that lot up whilst fitting the new radiator. ^ New rad on the left. There's quite a size difference but I reckon that if it cooled a 3.2 it'll cool a 2.0, particularly as I have more airflow through the rad than a W124 does. Scientific, ain't I?! ;D The fittings are all in the same place, it's just a bit shorter. The rad is pretty much brand new - all shiney! It was obvious what had happened: the W124 owner had an overheating problem, replaced the radiator, problem persisted, so lost his temper and scrapped the car. The engine was still in the car so I suspect a popped HG. Well, that and the fact that there was a pint of mayonnaise in the radiator which I've been flushing out. Still, £20 and it was mine! The other advantage of having a shorter rad is that I have space for an intercooler at the front of the car, probably underneath. This opens up my intercooler options no end! So, that's about it. Not massive progress, but progress none-the-less. Hopefully I'll be doing more this weekend.

Any chance you want to sell a pair of those Wide wheels? Send me a PM and we'll discuss it...cheers!!!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Your turbo conversion progess, makes me blush. Good work mate! Need to get my finger out of my harris and sort out my oil feed pipes (various other un-exciting and annoying ancilleries that are stoping my from running boost )

I just haven't had the time. Really need the car back though, it's quite depressing seeing it outside every day not progressing.

Awesome project man. I've been doing a bit of rust work on my Datsun B310 coupe lately and i don't envy what you have been doing. Great to see that you are however.
As far as boost retard - why not just lock the centrifugal advance on the dizzy? Thats what i plan on doing on my homemade turbo set up. Yeah its crude, but i figure boost will come in about how the standard advance curve does, so it should be ok without it. Yet to test though, i think it would probably run pretty bad off boost?

This is a strange coincidence - Yesterday I started work on the Benz for the first time in weeks and weeks (due to general life curse word and general curse word weather I've not been able to do anything), and my thread gets pulled up from page 248 the next day! ;D
Nothing interesting going on really - just cutting out rust and welding in fresh steel.
Volodkovich - Thanks! I am thinking about doing something along those lines. My idea is to retard the dizzy a few degrees (i've heard 1 deg of retard per lb of boost mentioned) and see how it goes. I would like to use Megajolt but I think that may have to come in later as I really don't need any more items on my "to do" list. I'll look into locking the mech advance aswell.
Today I'll be playing in the engine bay as the welder has broken again.
