Cheers for the comments!  Made some more progress today, I'm totally knackered and utterly sick of the sight of rust, but I'm chopping it all out which is giving me satisfaction! ;D First casualty of the project - I managed to angle grind my finger!  ^ Surprisingly little blood seeing as it was really deep... and no pain! The hot disk cauterised it I think. Anyway, to the task in hand...  ^ The inner wing all seam welded. I left my bro to do this whilst I did the floor...  ^ I chiselled away all that pesky bitumen sound deadening that had caused all the grief. That brown colour isn't rust, it's glue. Fortunately no more rust was uncovered.  ^ Made up a patch for the floor.  ^ Chopped all the grot out.  ^ And offered it up. However, the sill was bothering me so I left off from the floor / bulkhead to concentrate on the rusty sill...  ^ Wire wheeled all the crud out so I could see what's what. Underneath the sill showed up really thin, holey steel that had obviously just been treated and filled over rather than cut out, by previous repairers.  Time for some new steel then... New sills are available, but that would mean I'd have to wait for ages for it to arrive. Nah, I'll make a little section...    ^ I used a piece of wooden bannister to beat the panel over and get the curve of the sill. It may be necessary to tweak it a bit more once I start tacking it on, but I'll see about that tomorrow... I've only offered it up and cut out the old sill section, but tomorrow I'll tack it on. |

When are you hoping to get it back on the road? Well, I'm hoping that it'll be ship-shape and Bristol fashion by this time next week. I really really need my car back... I have the indignity of using public transport at the moment! ;D What I have to be careful of is that it doesn't turn into a full-on resto - I really don't have the time, money or facilities to be taking on that kind of work. I keep finding other bits I want / need to do on it but I'll just need to make a mental note of it and do it at a point in the near future. I've been busy over the weekend though! I'll update soon... |

Right, I've been struggling with a bit of a bug the last few days so progress hasn't been as fast as I'd like. That and other "life curse word" that generally hinders my progress... but at least the weather's been good! ;D As the car is immobile, I figured I'd pull the starter motor off, as it's never worked properly since I've had it - sometimes it doesn't engage and just spins. Most embarassing. When I say "just pull the starter motor off", what I mean is spend three and a half hours swearing, skinning knuckles and wishing I was double-jointed. It really is a pig of a job, but I managed it!  ^ The offending article. I could have sent it off to be rebuilt... but that costs money! And besides, I figure that I wouldn't send off any other part of my car to be rebuilt, I'd do it myself. The starter should be no different! It's only an electric motor after all...  ^ Here it is stripped down. The brushes and bearings all look fine, so I greased up the mechanical parts and gave the solenoid the once-over as it might be that that's being lazy and causing the probs. I'll re-fit this week when I can hire a contortionist dwarf to come and help me get it back in. Fingers crossed it should work much better! I'll just add that it is not my copy of the Daily Mail in that pic... dunno where that came from but I think I've found the best use for it! ;D So, back to the steelwork.  ^ Couple of coats of Red Lead (the proper stuff!) and seam sealer over the joints.  ^ Quick waft over with grey primer. Didn't really need to do that but it was lying around so thought I'd use it.  ^ I tacked on and started seam welding the sill section.  ^ Floor sections are also buzzed in.  ^ More Red Lead on the inner wing. I seam sealed it from this side also.  ^ And before it got dark this evening I cut out the remaining grotty bit of bulkhead and tacked in the new section! Also picked up this...  Which will need prepping and painting. Bit of an unexpected expense but Dez couldn't courier one of his to me so I thought it best to bite the bullet and buy one. Still, it's good that they're still available! Tomorrow I'll be finishing the bulkhead welding, making the sill end cap and doing other bits of tidying up. |

Woah! Deja vu! Yeah it feels good now I've got rid of all the rust. Still have the other side to look at but I'll have to put that to the back of my mind for now... one step at a time! ;D

I'll just add that it is not my copy of the Daily Mail in that pic... dunno where that came from but I think I've found the best use for it! ;D I would have offered my services as I am the skinniest person that I know and have the ability to do things in engine bays that where only thought possible by contortionist dwarves - although I am 6' 2", I only weigh 9st and therefore, my arms are like the longest thinnest things you have ever seen! Ideal for tight bits in engine bays... Unfortunately, I am off down south this weekend delivering wheels for Adam and not around but if you really need help on the following weekend, just let me know! |

Thanks for the offer rysz! I reckon putting it back will be easier than taking it off... I'm gonna have a crack at it tomorrow. Oldbus - MOT is some time this month, but I'm not sure exactly when... must dig out the old one to see! ;D OK, really cooking now! It was a little cold this morning...  Had to scrape the icicles off before I started working!  ^ I finished off the sill / bulkhead area... ...And turned my attention to getting rid of the rest of that bitumen sound deadening. It ain't called curse word-u-min for nothing! That stuff was a nightmare to get off. A while with a hammer and chisel got it all off though.  ^ Thinners got all the old glue off and it was ready for a lick of paint.  Whilst that was drying I seam sealed the inner wing...  And gave the outer wing underside a few coats of the red stuff too...  Prepped the ouside and began to prime it...  ...but ran out of paint As the seam sealer was dry, I thought I'd give the inner wing and floor some stone guard protection. I'd bought this...  ...in preparation. They didn't have black, so I got grey. Well, I can honestly say that in the Benzboy product test, this gets a big fat FAIL. Not only is it little more than thick paint, the nozzle clogged about five times and wouldn't unclog, meaning that I spent at least two hours getting the stuff onto the panels. I've used an entire can of it and really want to use something else over the top - that stuff won't protect the car for long. Plus, I was hoping for some thicker stuff to cover over the welds / sealer so it looks a bit neater! Any suggestions welcome!  ^ Well, it's covered. But I'm not that happy. I'll be looking for some decent stone guard before I put the underseal on and replace the wing... I couldn't resist a peek at the other footwell, just to see what I've got waiting for me. I've resisted taking the N/S wing off until I've finished the O/S... just a psychological thing really, as I don't want to feel overwhelmed! One step at a time and all that...  ^ Not TOO bad... definitely need a bit of a patch on the inner sill / floor. The bulkhead is mostly surface rust, but there's a definite rust hole further up. I'll just have to get stuck in to see how much of it is solid... after the O/S wing is on... |

Thats looking really good.
You´ve been really busy there......
Not sure what you can get in the UK but if you´ve got access to a compressor buy the 1litre tins of stone chip stuff. Make sure its not bitumin based and you´ll be alright.
Look forward to seeing pics of the other side...

It's staying satin black for now... it's a nice low-maintenance paintjob that I can just waft over with a rattle can if I get any scratches or dings in it... I'm not very good at shiny! ;D Hoping to finish the wing's paint tomorrow (after I get some more...), although I could really do with getting on with work... I've sort of given myself a bit of a holiday to finish this, but it's taking longer than expected!  |
