Hello all! Newbie checking in. Been a lurker for a while but thought I'd join in the fun now that I've just bought this off the bay: Is it really old enough to be true retro? I dunno, you decide! Anyway, once I've picked it up, there'll be some subtle mods taking place. Can't really whack it with the stick due to the monster speed humps down my road. So, nothing too radical as I'm nearly 47 and the wife will accuse me of suffering a mid-life crisis! ;D Anyone with some experience with the Astra please give me some pointers, I've never owned a Vauxhall before.

Keep the color, some nicer wheels, give the engine a few minor tune up bits, filter etc, uprate the shocks don't have to lower it, and give it a better not chav style exhaust and you'd have a faily good Astra.

Can't really whack it with the stick due to the monster speed humps down my road. Yes you can - I did and I bet my speed humps are bigger than yours ! ( my speed humps are the kind with tree roots growing under them to make them even humpier ...)

( my speed humps are the kind with tree roots growing under them to make them even humpier ...) I bet they're not bigger! These bstad things are like 9 inch high kerbstones, a total nightmare. We are currently at the post petition stage of efforts to get them removed. What's worse is that I only live in a fairly short road (100 metres or so) and in that distance there are 10 of the poxy things and one of them sits right at the end of my driveway!

Welcome to RR! I think these mk3's are quite retro, the styling is dated enough for me when you compare it to new cars. I also think that these are one of those cars that will dissapear from under our noses, a lot like the mk2 did! Once they were everywhere, now they're not seen all that much at all. That colour looks good on it, it's a shame you can't lowering a huge amount because I think that would look great! But I think some dark grey alloys would look nice against the pale yellow, and maybe change the side repeaters to some clear ones? That would work for me. Looking at that grille, does the big chrome Vauxhall bit un-clip? I think it would look good without that, it would clean up the lines at the front. Good luck with it!

I like mk3's Is yours the 1800? or the 2 litre? Pineapple yellow is one of my favourite ever colours I had a Sport estate a few years back, and it was great. The engine was one of the most unrefined i've ever had, but it went well enough ;D Get a 40mm lowered set of springs on it, i've just fitted some to my td estate and it still manages big speedbumps fine

I much prefer the shape of the Mk3, that's why I waited for a worthy candidate for my project. It's the 1.8 litre version. Paint is much more faded than I expected but the bit I've cut back looks pretty good. The engine is unrefined but pulls pretty well, it's certainly quicker than I thought it would be. Standard wheels are going to be kept but are being refurbed and sprayed graphite grey metallic. I need to replace the bulbs behind the heater controls and sort the uneven idle. Other than that, I'm happy with it. My son is looking at the suspension side of things for me so I'm, leaving him to sort that!

good clean out of the throttle body and idle control valve will hopefully sort out your lumpy idle. For info the ecotecs don't really like cone filters and I found a better response with a K+N panel filter, de-restricted (read get rid of as much of the plastic from inside) airbox and removing the resonator box from underneath the airbox. The 1.8 isn't going to be slow but for better results the engine from a 91 - 94 Mk3 GSi (C20XE or more commonly known as a red-top) will allow approx 150BHP with minimum hassle. A calibra turbo engine (C20LET) as mentioned above can also be installed easily enough and should and are 204BHP in factory tune. A few with 5dr MK3's are pulling off quite decent 200TS replicas (5dr MK3 as found in South Africa fitted with C20LET, 5 stud wheels and GSi bodykit from the factory) The V grille looks good when painted black and mk4 astra side repeaters fit on fine but the opposite way round. Another good mod is to find and fit the rear lights from a 91 - 94 GSi too as these are red at the bottom and smoked at the top (see pics of mine at the bottom of this post. Pineapple yellow is notorious for fading but not as bad as flame red. All in your sport looks good and understated is the way forward. My 1.8 sport Ive gone back to the standard grille and indicators and changed to mk4 astra side repeaters but you get the idea.

Some nice Astras there and your car looks particularly good. I like what you've done with your grille, so I think I'll poach that idea! One weird thing happened between me setting off with the car and getting it home. Both front indicators have lost their glass. I know they were there when I got in the car! Spooky. Is the throttle body/idle control valve fix an easy one? Will carb cleaner do the job?

Thanks very much. Thats a common problem with the indicators I believe. Rear wiper and dash bulbs are also common problems. I just used carb cleaner on my throttle body first off and it did the trick. Feel free to poach the idea with the grille. Mine is back to standard now as I didn't really do a good job of leaving the griffin badge standard Some good sites fo rreference / tech help / parts: www.migweb.co.uk - MIG performance Vauxhalls www.mk3oc.com - astra mk3 owners club www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk - parts www.autovaux.co.uk - parts

One more thing, I know this is gong to sound a bit daft but are these 1.8 Astra Sports all 8v or 16v engined?

Anyone with some experience with the Astra please give me some pointers, I've never owned a Vauxhall before. ello. I'm onto my 3rd mk3 astra now (amongst other cars), so far have had an L reg white 3 door merit, a P reg blue 5 door LS and currently an M reg blue 5 door custom "GLSRi" (it's what you get when you mix together a merit, a GSi, an SRi, an LS, a GLS (cavalier) with calibra, vectra, cavalier and belmont bits) Plus just last week the other half went ahead and bought a car I recently valeted for the owner to sell - an R reg 1.6 16valve sport "arctic" with just about every conceivable extra on it 5 door in silver. current (GLSRi 2.0i 8v) brian's current (Sport 1.6 16v) previous (LS 1.4i) first (merit 1.4i) I dunno if you're allowed to do this on here so I apologise if I'm breaking rules, but as I use more than one forum myself as I have more than one car (my astra isn't retro, my saab is!) I'll mention I'm also a full member of astra owners club ( www.astraownersclub.com), a VBOA affiliated official club (Vauxhall, Bedford and Opel association). So it might be worthwhile checking them out, you can either join as a free member for forum access, meets etc, although if you choose to pay to become a full member you get all sorts of extra goodies including insurance discounts, parts club discounts etc. IMO the "pineapple" sport is a classic astra, one of the definitive mk3's along with the GSi, and one that gets recognised all over by vauxhall enthusiasts, if you make it along to the VBOA rally at Billing with it this year you'll have to come and say hi, I'll be on the AOC show stand with mine (and hopefully Brian's as well), there's also Performance Vauxhall show at Santa Pod but that doesn't have so many classics as the VBOA show. The lights going behind the heater controls is a common fault, as is the heater ceasing to work on settings 1 & 2 after a while. Watch out for rear light faults (the area around the rear light cluster is prone to water ingress on some, and hence electrical problems and back light failure). Rot spots are mainly the wheel arches and around the petrol filler cap - keep a close eye on these areas and nip any bubbles in the bud quickly before it spreads. Grilles often unpop at one corner, superglue is the only real remedy tbh, although replacing it altogether with a reiger grill (rrp about £80) makes a nice smooth subtle looking front end. For goodness sake do NOT get lexarse lights for the back! As mentioned above GSi rear lights are nicer. phase 1 rears are very orangey, phase 2 rears (like yours will be) are less so but GSi are the tastiest. Have fun with it, and let me know if you are in need of any mk3 specific advice and/or parts (I have all sorts lying around, including a set of electric windows if you need it) and what I don't have I can usually source pretty easily. (unless it's a split recirc/aircon button - they're like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo lol) Kirsty

Hi Kirsty. I'm afraid that the silver mk3 is not a sport. Sports all had roof mounted ariels opposed to passenger side, rear quarter mounted ariels like other mk3's Only visible difference between the 8 and 16v is the badge on the back

Mine doesn't have the 16v badge on the back and it doesn't look like one has ever been on there so perhaps it is an 8v!

well when I assume sport it's basically because it has the sport interior and bumpers and generally spec. I thought only the GSi's had roof mounted aerials? Oh well you learn something every day. Kirsty

actually thinking on that point, my mate's genuine pineapple sport (M reg) originally had the aerial on the quarter, although he took it off and (not very well, unfortunately) filled/smoothed the hole and relocated to a roof aerial. (full pics from 2006 AOC meet at www.ukshires.net/ikea.htm ) you can just see the dimple here. compare to my LS: Kirsty
