It handles better than i was expecting yet it is a little boaty i would like to get hold of a full set of stiffer springs and shocks!

Tidy or what? I had those seats in my 90Q, always looked wet - shiny fabric  Mine were knackered on the drivers bolster though, yours look unused! |

from the looks of it someone has replaced the interior as it has electric window switches with out the electric windows!
Can anyone tell me why you would need a ABS off button for anything other than J turns?

You shouldnt be touching your brakes when doing J turns :-)
Let momentum take over and quickly into second gear then floor it........great feeling.

I got one of them, also a little smokey, but more pink than red... But mines got a boot spoiler  ;D Shouldn't be 'boaty' - as well as springs/dampers suspect suspension bushes as they do need replacing relatively often on these (and B3's). I get high 20's mpg if light footed, but use the revs (which it loves) and it develops quite a thirst. Bought mine for the engine to go in my Rocco, but liked it so much decided to run it for a while. It's doomed as of 2nd February though (if you need any bits give me a shout) |

With the ABS on the wheel will not lock and the wedge will not form leading to longer stopping distances. |

With the ABS on the wheel will not lock and the wedge will not form leading to longer stopping distances. Yeah, Audi made a big point of ABS and were one of the first companies to use it. I think because many of their cars were sold in scandanavian countries they kept a switchable system for some time, as cars stop much better on snow when the wheels lock. I remember an audi ad that basically said "You know when ABS is better and when it's not. That's why we give you a switch...." Modern systems are much improved however! I had an 80 Tdi Avant for about 2 years. Cost me an arm and a leg to run! Great luxo-cruisers though. Make sure you have good tyres on the front or the handling is wayward in the wet. |

They do knock out suspension bushes Change them and subframe bushes Top mounts are another weak point, go for genuine VAG "Blue" top mounts as these are the stiffest factory ones as used on RS2 New Dampers and stiffer springs are worth doing, I ran S2 Springs on My / Cap cruisers/ Filmidgets/Judgies  90Q and it handled superbly  ;D would be even better in a 4 pot as less weight hanging out front too HTH Dom |

cheers i will remember to use the switch next time i drive through a snow drift in bristol! I have been surprised by the performance and how well this handles! I was expecting it to under steer like a curse word and the fuel economy has improved with calmer driving. I think i will invest in good tyres, valve stem seals as it has burnt a 2L of oil in a week, poly bushes, and stiffer suspension over the next 6 months.

last night it went wrong! i started a hot engine and it was only running on three and a pinking noise when under load from the top end. I have not started poking anything yet, i was going to start on ignition and fueling.

If it's head related, I don't actually need the head off mine.
Sorry to be so pesimistic... but if worst comes to worst, and the bottom end has survived, the 2 litre bottom ends are much desired by Golf/Rocco owners.

The bottom end is fine and it was between the cylinders and it did not over heat so i should not need to skim it, i will check it though! i needed to change the valve stem seals anyway, while it is off i will give it a good polish and over haul with new cam belt and chain! it is relatively easy to work on this engine especially in this big engine bay, mounted longitudinally.

Not too disasterous then. Don't forget the cam belt tensioner. I see you know about changing the cams Shame yours is a 'k' reg - mines on a 'J' and I could have legally(ish) de-catted it. Just noticed you also own a 1500 Midget - any engine bay seem spacious after working on a Midget! Except don't forget to change the dizzy cap while the heads off, 'cos it's a bu99er to do in situ. Keep looking at mine sat waiting to be ripped to pieces and wondering if I am doing the right thing... |

emission tests on cars registered after 1 August 1992 (when K started) fitted with catalytic converters. you don't need a cat fitted you just need to pass a emissions test!
