Did Lancia just develop the flat-4 engine for the Gamma? I find that delightfully insane given their reputation for 'V's.

No it was a larger version of the 2000hf which was used for the gamma, you'll also find a modified version in the Impreza, Subaru bought engines from Lancia and them rebuilt/redesigned them to their spec. The reason they used a flat four was to keep the bonnet line low. Geoff

Subaru have been churning out flat-4s since the mid '60s, so I doubt if that's true.

Thanks for loading the pictures. first picture is in Grau, Holland at the Dutch Gamma Meet second is on Fiats private test track at La Mandria 100th anniversary meeting in Turin, they also let us use the roof-top circuit on the old Fiat building, amazing trip Turin 11:30 am - Calais 21:30 same day. ------- the 2 ltr flat four was used by Lancia in the 50's for the HF if you ever see an old cut away engine in a Subaru dealer it will be a Lancia engine.

Wow x 1,000,000!!! Gorgeous car, and you've driven it all over Europe*? Respec!
* Well, Holland and Italy at least. I grew up quite near Grou, not Grau (that's the Frisian spelling, Grouw in Dutch spelling) so I hope you forgive me for correcting your spelling.
