bo11, you know that jacking point/outrigger thing? The Manta has a similar arrangement (not my pic) A fella on the Manta club made his own ones which I reckon are as strong as, if not stronger than the originals out of box section trimmed to fit, might be worth considering on the Mazza rather than trying to save the flaky original: It's not pretty but it's barely visible and does the job well.

Mr Bol - your Croma seems determined to give you a similar ownership experience to the Argenta, and incidentally my 126. They have re-introduced the experiences of the early pioneers of motoring where you never know where you might be spending the night and if you will have to find the village blacksmith to cobble together an ECU out of old bits of horse and cart. Fiat deserve more credit for providing this 'total immersion' retroness. On a related note, aren't you concerned about why the Maserati has had to be jacked up so many times the chassis has worn away. I reckon it was constant underbody inspections by customs officials in Dover looking for the drugs stash of the cuban heeled owners.

^^^^^LOL, so true! These old fiats are a load of $hite, no doubt about it. I am a very long way from trusting either of mine to complete an important journey. I still love em though!
they're almost a challenge which must be successfully taken up, like something off the crystal maze.
Richard O Brien: "do you want a physical, a mental or a mystery challenge?"
Contestant: "Er, mental and physical please"
Team: "YEAH, WHOOP!!!! HIGH FIVE ETC"
Contestant goes through door into what looks like a lock-up garage painted to look like an Inca tomb or something.
Contestant: "OK i'm in a room full of sand, theres a Fiat 131 with the bonnet up!!!!111. Theres a road map on the passenger seat with a crystal highlighted about, lets see, 100 miles from here! The room's got a roller shutter door at the end! The fuel filler flap is open and theres a can pf petrol on the floor nearby! Oh my god!!! Theres some spark plugs and a can of easy start on a bench!!!!!!!
Richard O brien: "OK I'm starting the clock!!! You've got 15 hours!"
Team: "ER, MAKE A FIRE WITH THE EASY START!!!" "LOOK AROUND FOR CLUES!!!!" CAN YOU SEE ANY KEYS OR PLAYING CARDS??!!!!" "WE SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN A MYSTERY GAME" etc.
Contestant: OMG THERES AN RAC MEMBERSHIP CARD BALANCED ON A SCALE NEXT TO A BUCKET FILLING UP WITH WATER FROM A SPRING!!!! WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!"
etc etc.

All old Fiats do this when recommissioned,- unless they've had a total rebuild (I do mean total). I've got so used to it, my family know it as'snagging' -& understand the likelihood of journey failure. . I carry more tools, ropes, jacks, etc etc than most peeps have ever owned- & have yet to be disappointed.
Once you've got them to around5-700 miles, they'll settle down into reluctant abeyance.
Lay them up however- and the clock zero's.
Keep at it. Boll. You'll get there

I swear, that's not a photoshop, that's actually what the other half of Mr Boll's garage looks like that he never takes photographs of for us.

Update time, managed to get a few hours in this mornign as Ms_Bol went off to a QUILT SHOW, (gripping stuff) So last time I had made a floor panel and tacked it in, well now its seam welded in properly. It was fun grinding that lot down with my head in the footwell. I hate the 'grinding down' stage because of the din. I always expect an angry knock at the door from someone telling me to keep the freaking racket down, even though my workshop is quite out the way. While doing this footwell I found a solution. A pair of cans (ear defenders) makes the whole lot seem a lot more peacful, and if someone does knock at the door, you're quite likely not to hear them. SORTED. With that done I had to make a new 'bridge piece' to bridge across from the outside of the floor to the middle sill. Heres the scraggy remnants of the old one: I drilled out the spot welds with my new spot weld cutter drill bit thing. What a marvellous tool that is, cant believe its taken me till page 30-odd of this blog to spend £5 on one of those. but before I could replace that bridge piece I had to glue a bit into the bottom of the A-pillar (in this pic that bashed-up chassis member thing is making an appearance: The bridge piece was just a straighforward bit of angle, I made it in the metal folder: I spot welded it in (photo taken later on): Now we're getting somewhere. The front end now looked like this, more or less ready to try and refit that mangled-up chassis piece. I welded in a little square to help position the chassis piece in the right spot. Unfortunatley I then got a bit carried away and forgot to take any snaps, suffice to say I chopped a bit more away from the chassis piece on one corner, which made it a lot more willing to co-operate with the curvature of the new floor panel. I also welded a niew piece in down one side where it had all gone a bit thin and crispy. I had a massive round-up of welding clamps and clamped it in: After a bit of hammering, and filling that gap on the outside edge, I stitched it in. Annoyingly I didnt take a 'final' picture to show where I was up to... still need to replace that piece I chopped out of the chassis member, and plate up the remaining hole in the inner wheelarch: Coming on OK though, probably my most successful welding job so far. Next job will be replacing the front half of the outer sill. While I was under the car I had a quick squizz at the other side, heers the chassis leg under the footwell: Its pretty bad, the drivers side is significantly worse than the passenger side. I deliberately did the 'good' side first, thinking that if I started on the bad side, and it turned out to be really bad, I might just get disheartened and fook it all off. But, if i'd invested loads of time in the other side and done a good job, I would be less inclined to chuck away that work, forcing me to persevere with the drivers side. The chassis leg on the drivers side inner wing has been patched once before, not mega well I suspect (plenty of underseal on it!!!) and to do it properly would involve taking the engine out. Obv I would rather not do that, but i'm not going to leave one crummy patch in if i've spent ages on the rest of the metalwork, so we'll see when I get a bit more intimate with it. Thats all folks, L8RZ

An excellent idea and I may have to borrow that for one of my Monzas - however it does rule out retaining the factory jack.
