well, picked it up a couple of weeks ago from a friend, who bought it from an elderly lady. One female owner , stored since 1991, still registered until the beginning of the year, regularily driven, can't be wrong ? 50 GLS wagons left on german streets according to the KBA (german DVLA) makes it pretty rare, so i had to take it. My first car was a Passat Variant, and i always wanted one since then. So yesterday i looked closer... i knew, that the rear wheel arches, the rear quarter panels, and the sills had to be made, now look what else i found left wheel arch... when i removed the mud flap, i held half of the arch in my hands ;D Then i got a little bit scared, this is the rear axle mount under the rear seats... One of the front subframe mounts... the right rear inner wing.... so the fuel tank has to be removed.... The spring seat on the rear.... the bump stop fell off, as there is no metal left this is the left inner wing... unbelievable amount of corroded metal.... first i was shocked, but this seems to be not so complicated to weld... This will be tricky; the rear axle mount.... already welded before, but as there are 4 layers of metal , not easy to repair... usual the nail in the coffin for these cars.... well, the interior is in fantastic condition; despite of the dashboard, but all the door cards, the headliner and all the blue velours seats are fantastic... finished for this weekend ; next weekend i'll take out engine/gearbox and axles.... and of course the front wings, i'll keep the best for the end ;D normally i should just weigh it in an pretend that i have never had it and even have never heard of a Passat, i'll decide what to do with it next week. Though after seeing here some really impressive projects (for example the twin engined Escort) motivates me to go on....it is just metal, can't be so hard ? ;D

Lets clear up car terms: "Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence. "Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

Gordon bennett, looks like a minter in the top pic as well. That welding on the rear axle mont is horrendous! Nice to know that even in germany you have hapless DIY mig-brandishing chugnuggets.

thanks for the comments, i am still not unhappy about the car... my first car was a 1974 Passat Variant in 1988; and it was as rusty as this one here, so i knew what was waiting for me... meanwhile, to get some motivation heres a pic of another wagon (in fact it belongs to the guy who sold me the silver one , he is currently building a 2door Variant out of two cars...)

go 4 it! Like Matt Jones said, it will all be worth it come next summer Wish I could but with Madge and LNK on the road and LYH having to be re-housed this weekend, and my 'modern Toyota Previa needing new discs all round before I can MOT it, and Christmas coming with 3 kids to buy for, and a divorce solicitor's bill to pay, and all sorts of other expense coming my way I can't afford another car.

a small update ; I love Sunday, sleep til 8, go out with the dog and after breakfast disappear into the workshop until lunch... ;D Took off the wings today, looks not nice, but I expected it to look like that.... The welding here is impressive... they tried to weld the a-pillar, they welded this piece of metal to the wing and not to the pillar... then out with the engine... I took out engine/gearbox/front suspension out completely; less work and I can put all the stuff into one corner.... Thought about restoring the cart then... less rust ;D this is the rear axle mount to be seen from the sill... the quality welding made a removal of the patches on the sill without tools possible.... now, this will be the hardest challenge... next week I am taking out the rear axle and the fuel tank....

Hi Jürgen,
