I'm getting weird flashbacks when I see this Jürgen... It's like the Audi I had... And what it this, have you bought ANOTHER passat?? See you soon, leaving the snowy place here and hope it's warmer I Germany... i could still kick you in the ass for selling the Audi... i am desperately searching one ;D you probably were in hospital, when i bought the red one, here's the thread : retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=49363this will hopefully bring us to norway, as it has loads of space inside, saves a couple of kms on my limited daily driver and of course we must at least go to one norwegian VW show.... and with aircondition it'll be fine for the norwegian dessert when you see it, you'll love it....

small update, didn't have too much time this weekend; i continued here ... this was the section at the left rear axle mount where the floorpan meets the axle mount.... thin like paper, I could cut it out... made a panel.... it fits.... there will be another piece of metal that connects the new panel with the floorpan... couldn't be bothered to start the welder today, as the weather was too nice to stay in the workshop.... so stay tuned until next weekend ....

FFS Jürgen, is there any bit of that Passat that doesn´t need welding? ;D
Oh and when you pop up to Norway you must stop off in Osnabrück to replenish your supply of decent english tea bags! ;D

this weekend i spent only a little time in the workshop, but another result... welded in a little piece of metal... i don't want the driver seat to fall out, so this is an important piece... this is the inner piece, connected to an reinforcement part of the body... the outer piece was built, and welded in, too. It needs a bit more welding from the inside of the car, but didn't want to do that today; also i got all the papers from the previous owner including the original bill of sale. The car was 15.000 DM in 1978, this is roughly 7.500 Euros ; that buys you a brand new Dacia Logan these days... she was also charged 20 DMs for the number plate sourrounds and 150 DM for a waxoil treatment ( looking at the rust, she should claim her money back ). The car was registered until march 2007, the last TÜV was in 2001, so actually it had TÜV until 2003... the last registration was ED-PC 30, so try to get something similar here (WN-PC 30 for example...). Well, there has a LOT of work to be done before i can register that, but the story behind the cars is an important thing for me....

Your determination is relentless!! You've made excellent progress, great to see the wheel wells in colour and new suspension bits in place, really coming together now! Keep it up

Keep it up I'll try to keep up, though it might slow down the next two weeks ; Polardego is coming over and we have to pick up some old crazy wheels in very fishy locationsdo some sightseeing around here, and the red Passat must be roadworthy in March.... white? . . excellent choice!! 18" on a mk1 Passat?? . . . hmm . . not sure if 13's or 14's wouldn't look better . . Don't worry, the 18s were just a trial fit, these belong to my daily driver.... i'll put some 13" steels from the Mk.I GTI on the Passat, or some cosmic wheels if i find some.... i want to have a classic registration ("H-Kennzeichen") so standard wheels are a must...

No update here since I left Juergen at a fishy location... ;D Well, you have to buy sunglasses before you arrive in Norway. I've posted this tread at the Norwegian VW Audi club forum. In Die Aller Vaerste famous tread, the biggest and most watched in this forum with almost 3000 members...

FAF - I cannot believe how rusty that old girl is but credit where credit is due you are doing a superb job of fitting fresh steel hey , it's just metal, that can be replaced ;D I have seen a lot worse VWs on the internet (especially bay window campers) which have been restored; so it is only a matter of replacing metal pieces.... still a lot of work, and surely a bay window is worth more in the end, but there are so much around .... no update the last weeks, I am waiting for some important parts (rear panel, front subframe etc.) and also the wife came inbetween with some strange "windows" thing for the house... who needs windows in the house ? Hopefully I can do some more next weekend.... No update here since I left Juergen at a fishy location... ;D Well, you have to buy sunglasses before you arrive in Norway. I've posted this tread at the Norwegian VW Audi club forum. I already have a paper bag over my head since we left the fishy location, what more do you want ?

on friday the parts taxi arrived : the upper part of the rear panel, mine is totaly rusted and fubared by a blind welder.... this bit is a bit too complicated to fabricate a new one... and a front subframe; the one on the silver one is still usable, but this one is from a 1987 Passat, which is in better overall condition... also i got a complete rear brake incl backing plates and drums from the 87 Passat, i want to test, if the brakes have the same size, so i can use them (they are self-adjusting, that's the only reason, all brake stuff will be new)....

Really going well there Jeurgen, spares collection and finding is always the most difficult part of most builds.
Oh, and good luck with the windows thing .

2 months later.... there was a little bit of rust (this car is made of a little bit of rust ) at the rear panel : this is an area, which is not easy to repair, as the metal is hard to put in a shape like that.... fortunately i have a spare panel from a donor car.... trial fit of the new rear panel... yes, looks good... finished... almost... now i have to re-design the rear panel, weld it in and i am finished with the rear of the car.... ;D I'll do that probably tomorrow.....

now I have to re-design the rear panel, weld it in and I am finished with the rear of the car.... ;D I'll do that probably tomorrow..... well, that "tomorrow" just took another 6 months well, I was busy, but I had to do a little bit this weekend, I had a couple of horrible weeks in the job, so I needed something to relax, what would be better to do some welding to calm down ? first thing I did today was adjust the trunk lid, I am suspecting some really huge panel gaps, i'll have to sort that out. The trunk lid doesn't have shock absorbers, but some kind of springs to keep it open.... and you have to be careful when you open it, without glass and the rear wiper it comes up very fast ... so I secured it with a strap....and started the welder.. there is normally a second panel at the bottom of the rear panel, but I didn't buy that, as it is a rust trap anyway and when the bumper is fitted, you don't see it... then I trial fitted the taillights (have to buy new ones, as the old ones are damaged)... I think that's ok so far, still not perfect, but i'll do that at a later point of time... I only have to grind the welds down and blend everything in, but didn't want to do that today... I think i'll have a separate "panel gap day"(or two, or three...) in the future.... it was important, that something was done after that long time.... next week, if everything is going well, i'll have a couple of days off (until next year), and spend some more time on this one... finish all the welding at the rear and grind everything down, put primer on it, put the rear brakes on again so I can have this one rolling.... a friend of me bought some NOS panels and there seem to be some sills and front panels included, so that's what will be next....
