I believe as they are steel, just get them resplined by a good engineering shop and they should be able to re-harden them for you as well. The mild steel that is used for these parts IIRC is fine for this kind of reworking!
Completely not 100% sure though, I am sure that someone more knowledgable than I will be along soon.

2 questions Dave, what is the width hub face to hub face of your rear axle, and what is the PCD of the wheels?
If the Autobahnstormer is the same sort of width as a Thames, as it looks to be, the axle will be about 56" toatl width. There is an axle available, that will possibly be easier to fit than cutting and shutting a Transit one and getting shafts made. Cutting an axle casing sounds easy, but is actually quite a complex job, (for the benefit of those who don't know) and involves the use of a couple of alignment blocks that fit into the bearing housing, and a straight true machined bar that fits through the whole axle, thus ensuring everything is kept square. You then have the problem of the shafts, and these can be resplined and shortened and heat treated, but the best method is new shafts, engineered to suit. There's probably a better guarentee with these.
Another method I have seen used Dave is an external overdrive unit, possibly off the back of a Jag, amd inserted into the driveline, thus giving a switchable overdrive for motorway/ Autobahn use. This would entail some fabrication work for a cradle, and adaptor drive off your gearbox output shaft onto the input of the o/d unit, and another propshaft making, or your current one modified.

Oh, and if you don't use that 4.11 I could find a great use for it under my Transit, rather than the 4.6 that's there now

Cheers Rysz, I think the problem is that the splines are originally rolled on and not "cut in". Yes mate, like " killing two stones with one bird" I won´t know until next weekend when I get the axle whether it´s do-able or not but I will be trying very hard as it will give me some decent suspension and disc brakes....! Hi Andy, the MKII 4,11 Transit axle has a with(backing plate to backing plate) of 148cm, which is 58inches if I got my maths right. Like all old Transits, including ours it has a PCD of 5 x 160 and are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony sheet to find as everybody wants them! ;D I´m quite happy shortening the case as it wouldn´t be the first time The shafts will be left to the professionals or I find some others that fit. Buying custom ones just isn´t an option mate, this isn´t a cheque book restauration, as i´m not rich we´ll just have to be clever instead!! ;D ;D ;D The overdrive option is an interesting if not expensive one. Miguels green MKI has an overdrive matched up to his 4.11. Can´t see me going down that road as the automatic box already has a decent ratio, not sure what it has but the Scorpio was good for 130mph! If I don´t use the 4,11 and it fits your Thames mate you´re more than welcome to have it for what I paid for it (120 Euros) ;D

Had a play with the Scorpio this afternoon and whipped the engine and box out... still can´t believe how big these engines are, it´s a tight fit in the Scorpio never mind the van...god knows how i got it in there!!! ;D ;D I´ve organised a Granada front axle that i´ll be picking up next Saturday, now all i need is my van back! ;D

is that the 2.9 or 2.8? is there much of a difference in power? It´s another 2.9 24V pushing out about 200BHp without the cats. The 2.8 is going into my mate Thorstens Taunus 17M as it´s got the lead free cylinder heads on it. The 2.8i has 150 BHP and on carbs about 137 ;D Oh and yes it was the 2.924V that went bang, and as soon as i get the van back this one is going in! ;D

I think it is just the right thing to do.
Nicola asked if you were actually alowed into the house, as you were always busy outside.
I guess that she still is surprised at the amount of time I spend with her.

scorpio rear end wont fit the mk1 granny without a lot of modding just in case you didnt know, i got a fox body mustnag axle for my cortina, its roughly 58" and my 7.5" one is stronger than an atlas but lighter, they do an 8.8 and a 9" as well, the 9" is the same one (but shorter) they fit to the full size pickups and are pretty much indestructable in a normal road vehicle, super cheap and normal 4 stuf ford fitting, super cheap compared to an atlas (mine was free) and a LSD is $250 dollars, so its an economical choice.

That axle looks indistructable Mr. Toaster, sounds like a good and relatively cheap option...i´ll be back to pick your brains once i´ve got the front sorted.... ;D Just finished dismantling the front end of the Scorpio...... Want to get rid of it on Friday afternoon so need to get all the goodies (ecu, radio, amp etc) out by then...... Why´s it getting dark here at half past eight?

What sort of handbrake boot is on the scorpio? Can you take a photo please as I'm looking for a decent swap for the one I have (mine is a bit split).
