How about swapping that bit of wire for a second hand nicked from an old clock? Then give it a lick of paint to match the pointers on the speedo and dials.
Maybe it would even look nicer if you cut a quadrant shape out of the dashboard, or even a crescent in the same style as the fuel and water gauges, and put the needle behind the dash, and put a backing card behind the needle, perspex in front, and a light too, so it looks like a proper built in gauge.

Just started to catch up as I have been very busy this weekend, with nothing to do with my toys, not even had internet on for 48hrs.... Looking Great Dave. Let me know if you want me to get you some of those letters I got before.... to show where you are. Alternately, I suspect that with a bit of searching , you should get smaller letters, the sort of thing you see on old clock faces. Love your continued evolution of ideas.

Nice neat solution Dave though I'm not sure about the Automatic badge either. A bit big maybe. And who is it telling? How about swapping that bit of wire for a second hand nicked from an old clock? Then give it a lick of paint to match the pointers on the speedo and dials. Can probably help with a hand if you want one Also got an idea for the PRN&D. While I probably shouldn't volunteer other peoples services how about drawing a quadrant up that MarkBognor could laser etch in perspex?

I quite like the auto sign, script looks a bit modern maybe though, a mk1 escort one or similar may look a bit more oldy worldy maybe. I'd make your gear indicator light up if possible as well, from experiance of duff bulbs in autos even though I count the notches from park I am never sure its in drive and that can be embarresing at the traffic lights. The auto sign is from 1969 so it´s not too far off. I´ll worry about it when i´ve got the important stuff out of the way and it´s up and running. ;D How about swapping that bit of wire for a second hand nicked from an old clock? Then give it a lick of paint to match the pointers on the speedo and dials. Thought about cutting the dash and having the pointer come in from underneath. To be honest, i shouldn´t be playing around with small details like this until i´ve got all the fabrication out of the way and it´s actually up and running. I only did this because i couldn´t be bothered doing anything else yesterday - i see this as the MKI version and there´s definately room for improvement. hope you don't wear socks with them sandals ;D ...only when i´m welding mate! Thanks Rian, i´ll just be getting a few simple black letters from the local office supplier for now. Ideally i´d like to make a box out of polished alu and get it looking better. I think once i´ve got the rest of the van finished i´ll make something up using one of the spare speedos i´ve got lying around. I´m going to have to modify the speedo anyway to take the speedocable from the Scorpio. well, the PRND thing is pritty easy, just nick some Perodua Nippa badges and that's it ;D ;D Cheers Jürgen, not sure what " Perodua Nippa badges " are....sounds rude though ;D

No proper update today i´m afraid. Had just started ripping out the accelerator cable out of the Scorpio this afternoon and my neighbour turned up in his 1958 Deutz tractor and offered to help me lose those old pines that had been getting on my nerves the last few years..... so you can hardly say no, as without him it would otherwise take me ages to lose four 30 foot trees and roots....

no pics of the tractor?? i like what youve done with the gear guagey thing (couldnt come up with a better way of describing it just now) nice and simple, things don't need to be complicated about the auto badge tho, i think id look cool painted to match the dash, so it wouldnt be noticeable straight away and only really visable from certain angles

This might not be relevant, but on all the autos i've had they have had a button on the gear stick i think to go from drive to neutral (or vise versa). is this not important on this gearbox or did it not have one?

Gear guage thingy sounds about right to me mate, i´ll probably make up something better but it´ll do for a start. I´ve got other things to worry about, like getting the bloody thing up and running first. ;D I´ll see what the badge looks like when i´ve got the steering wheel back in and i can sit in the drivers seat, it´s no big deal to move it elsewhere or just throw it in the corner!

Hi Jim, the Scorpio gearstick had this button,as with all automatics, it stops you accidentally pushing it into gear. As the van only has a billiard ball it won´t have this safety feature but with it being column change i think i can live with it.

Didn´t get much done today as my neighbour turned up again. At least the tractor is old eniogh to be on here....it was in daily usage for over fourty years and is still going strong. Those were the days when made in Germany was worth something! Still managed to get the accelerator cable out of the Scorpio. Fitting it to the engine is not a problem, however i´ll need to make up a bracket tomorrow to hold the other end. Think imight have to rethink my airfilter position, looks like it won´t fit in here anymore... The engine has a maximun linkage travel of 21mm and my pedal used to have over fifty so i´ll need to shorten the rear of the pedal. Up until now i´ve always had my foot through the floorboards to get it moved anywhere, only onm the motorway did i let off a bit. If i do that with the new engine i won´t have my licence for much longer so i´ll have to adapt the pedal travel to match. Think with a bit of luck i´ll be able to use some old bike brake spares i´ve got to make up an adjustable cable bracket... more tomorrow! ;D

Hello again Dave, more progress I see. Keep up the inspiration for the rest of us!
Re your gear indicator, I have the indicator cowl and display out of a Ford Corsair doing nothing, but would have to mount on top of your column. Let me know if you need a picture. Cowl is bakelite so would cut easily. Might be just what you need. Failing that I can knock you up a digital LED display, but you would have to work out microswitch switching for each gear.
Nice tractor, can't help but think his linkage on the one pic might be usseful to you for gears!!!

I think i´ll stay with my retro theme and ask you for pics of the bakelite column display please. Love the idea of getting an old mechanical bit working and not having to go digital, especially if its a Ford bit. ;D Cheers, Dave

Have been forced to take a couple of days off, but was able to do a bit of catching up today... Got the accelerator pedal up and running. It took me a while to get the cable length right but after an hour or two of playing around finally got the pedal travel matched up to the engine. I cut an M10 thread in the plastic bit that normally goes through the Scorpio bulkhead... then modified one of the old seat brackets... and cut a thread in the back end of the pedal so that i can adjust movement from side to side if necessary... ...connected it all up and as far as i can tell without running the engine it works! ;D Now that the all three pedals are finished, and the handbrake is done i could now start making up the cowling for the radiator... Knocked up a couple of plates... so that the maximum amount of air possible is forced through the rad. That piping goes forward to the heater and will need to be connected up to the Scorpio hoses somehow. Underneath i used a bit of the original cowling turned through 90 degrees and shortened a bit... A bit of cardboard came in handy again... ..will hopefully be able to finish this all off tomorrow and give it a lick of paint...

Love the way that you just get it done. What's the legal implications of all this though? (apologies if it's already been covered) Will you actually be able to drive it?

As the van is on a red 07 classic numberplate i don´t have to go to the MOT, because if i did i wouldn´t have a chance.
As it stands i wouldn´t be doing this if i was going to be driving it regularly but for a few weekends in the summer i´ll risk it... ;D
