Only other real failiure point other than the timing gear ive heard about on these is big end wear, so maybe the oil feed is marginal anyway even before you modded your sump? The bottom end can self destruct in a big way if they are over revved, but I cant imagine that happening on a motorway cruise. and its an auto, so not gonna be over-revved really

The bottom end can self destruct in a big way if they are over revved, but I cant imagine that happening on a motorway cruise. and its an auto, so not gonna be over-revved really Thats true in most cases, but as this one is on the van axle i suspect it is possible to hold it on the limiter in top gear (not that I'm suggesting for one minute that dave is gonna be doing that) or over rev it while holding it in gear as they'll be quite short i would guess. Mine hits the redline at 130ish mph in 5th cos its under geared and it would keep on going till it exploded if i let it as its still pulling really strong at that speed and its easy to get carried away and not notice when your sitting behind an RS Focus annoying him as he's been trying to pull away from you from about 50mph and leave you behind. theoretically of course.

Well theoretically with the original van axle being 5,14, top speed will be down to about 100mph ish, which is way too fast for the van (and my nerves) anyway,
but I was only doing 55, honest officer!!! ;D

Hi Dave, bad news but with your ability to diagnose, fabricate, improvise, and generally fit balls on a banger, I'm sure it won't be too long before the old battlebus is going again.
I'm sure a lot of people on here would be interested to find out exactly what kaputted. Pics when you strip it?

Dave, I had it in my head that your front beam axle was dead straight and so an early ford one would give some more room. Never mind. A complete IFS swap sounds good adn as you say the season has ended early so you can get cracking. I expect it (and engine swap) done by October

It´s a busy time of the year workwise and I can´t kick the arsch out of it all the time.....! ;D

That shurely is an anti climax Dave. Hope you can get it fixed without to much problems. Saw the two busraser vans on the pic. Nice view :-D.

By the way, in the meanwhile I was wondering if you know where I can get doorgrips with build in locks. I have locks now on the steering side and in the side door. The rest of the doors I have to open from the inside. Do you have locks on all 4 doors?

Cheers Yes mate i do, but it´s taken me nearly two years to find the handles and i still have to play around with different keys for different doors. You can buy new (pattern) handles with keys at some of the bigger boot sales (Beaulieu, Essen, Mannheim) they´re similar to the original ones but to be honest i haven´t tried them out on our vans. With a bit of luck the post 63 VW Splittie ones could fit, you´ll just have to buy one and trial fit it. If i ever get round to fitting mine with central locking you can have my old ones but don´t hold your breath on that, it´s not on the top of my list!! ;D

While i´m waiting for the AA to get there finger out and bring me back my van i´m playing around with a couple of ideas how to improve the vans drivability. Obviously first up is an engine that actually works....! Once i´ve got the "new" 24V in the van i´m going to try and get a Granad front axle to fit. This´ll give me some decent suspension at the front and will allow me to use the original sump. Not going to be easy but it´s worth a go. Another one of the jobs on the "to do" list is get the rear axle a decent ratio for the Autobahn. At the moment it´s running it´s original 5,14 but i´ve got a Transit axle lying in the corner with a 4,11 ratio... Now to get this to fit the Taunus i´d have to shorten it by about 25cm, no probs with the casing but has anyone had the driveshafts shortened and lived to tell the tale? Left Transit, right Taunus The splines on the Taunus shaft don´t match the diff on the transitaxle unfortunately so looks like i´llhave to have the transit ones shortened. Can they be shortened and resplined or are they heat treated and will disintegrate first time I put my foot down? Cheers,
