I don't know why Mouseflakes, but I love your id! I don't know why Mouseflakes either! ;D Yes - clutch sounds pooped doesn't it? While the gearbox is off, also worth checking the mount at the very front - I've known of a few (similarly-engineered) R4s where this has broken, causing major judder.

Ah, well worth checking out then. Might try adjusting the clutch first and I'll check on mountings which could easily cause judder. Fortunately, with such low gearing, you don't have to slip the clutch much anyway.
WTF!! Just noticed the Renault 30 in your sig! Do you have a thread for it in Readers Rides?!

No, it's not on here, but it's 'known of' over on autoshite. Not modified or anything. Here's a pic.... And another... .

Now that gets an OOOF even though it isn't modded! (you don't have to mod cars to get on here it seems!). Gorgeous.

Oh bum! I think I've broken it already! Heading to Birmingham along the joyous A14, the gearbox started to whine slightly. Then it jumped out of gear at 65mph. Scary!
Decided to abandon our journey and limped home. Box is noisy but still working, no crunching. Wondering if the oil level is just low. Might get a chance to check this afternoon. Wounder.

Oh bum indeed!
Hope it's nothing too serious!
Fingers crossed it's just the oil level.

Just a bit concerned now - if it doesn't like motorway speeds, it isn't going to be much use. The bloke I bought it off has suggested that it shouldn't go faster than 60mph (I've had it up to 75...) but that's pants. I guess I'm used to being able to drive my 2CV flat out all day with no woes.
Perhaps it needs an engine upgrade! 1108cc would do but I don't think the 5 ever came with that engine connected to the dash-change 'box. 4 did though so I guess there are options.

Does your car have the HA 'flat top' style of g'box (with a large, flat square panel on the top with the gear change rod sticking out of it? ). When the R5 switched for floor mounted change they used this box and just routed the gear cahnge up the side and onto the top as before. Here's a link to the Clementines R4 Forum where they discuss putting the 5 speed version of the box into an R4 - but it shows the two box tops side by side, showing the switch from floor-mounted back to dash-mounted gear change. Useful gearbox stuff (click)

Lovely little car! Sorry to hear about the gearbox woes – my mum’s 1978 GTL used to jump out of top. Local BL-trained mechanic thought it looked too much grief to fix so just got sold on, fortunately it didn’t happen on the test drive…

It is a flat type box - will have a look at that info later!

Oil level checked. Got almost 300ml in but don't know if that means it was low enough to cause a problem. Total capacity is 1.8l. Will test at some point this week but I then got distracted by rusty bits - got some protective wax on it all.

I've got my fingers crossed for you 'wobbler (that's right Stouffer, you cross your paws too).
If the 'box is fubar'd then, as you say, the 1108 (or 1289 from a 5TS ;D) option might be the best way to go - 'specially if you're planning to use it muchly. You'll probably want the 'box that comes with the engine as they'll be higher geared than the one with the 850 I imagine.
I put a 5TS engine and box in my 6TL, but that had an 1108 already. Switching from the 850 might be a little more involved, but hopefully not too much.

We'll see. Would deffo need a 'box upgrade too as it's doing about sixty-eleven zillion revs at 70 as it is!
But it could be the earliest R5 in the UK so perhaps I shouldn't meddle.

I distinctly remember seeing an L reg a while ago, but I don't know who owned it and it could easily not be around anymore. I saw a green M reg with dash change about five years ago in Porthmadog as well - I do have a photo *somewhere*...
To be honest, pushing the 845cc 3-bearing engine past 60mph is asking for trouble. They are nowhere near as balanced as the 2CV engine.
(...and yeah, I'd buy it as well!)

Mini?! Given my wife's car's hatred of wet weather, I think I'll pass on that!
Drove in to work this morning - 25mph with lots of 60mph and she seems ok. No whine and no jumping out of gear thank goodness! Clutch is still going to need doing at some point though and it's quite an involved process. Doh!
