You know this car guys, it's dollywobblers dead metro - apart from its not dollywobblers anymore, it's mine now. You'll know it had a bit of a dropped valve issue, which i have been investigating. Prognosis is not good.... The valve has worked its way through the piston on number 2 cylinder snapped in half and taken the valve spring into 3-4 pieces too! the water is cause i forgot in a fit of enthusiasm to drain the coolant first! So it's an engine out for replacement job rather than just a head swap. Nuts... Just wanna give mad props to DW himself for going above and beyond to deliver the car to me this morning - appeciated dude. I'll pop some more pics up when it's clean but it needs to work first!

Booger - did suspect it'd be bad (hence being very reluctant to allow you to come, drop a new head on and drive home!). As I told you, my wife did drive quite a long way with it like that - credit to the car for making it home! No probs with bringing it over - nice to send it back to the Midlands - where it has spent most of its life. Good luck with it! By the way, if you've got to sling the lump, I'd be tempted to lob a non-hydro clutch one in. Then you've cured two problems! Turbochargers, straight-cut gears and lowering are optional - but not original!

Looks like it will be running a 998 for a month or two whilst I rebuild the original lump a little hotter than std. Hoping it will be running me round by the end of the week!

Cool. I'll keep watching with interest. Even 1275cc will feel super-quick after a 998 lump I imagine! Always felt plenty nippy pre-disaster.

Ill look out for it!
Rebuild the original lump? Boat anchor or ballast for weighing down a dead body surely? Theres plenty of good 1300 metty lumps about, sling an A+ lump in.

It's certainly easy to lob another engine in, but if you've got the skills and desire to rebuild the original lump, go for it!

i've been stripping the engine down and playing with it, and its got to be gone in the bottom end too - when its in gear the gearbox turns but the engine doesn't - crank or rods broken? will know more when its in bits but i've got to get it going first! I'll be sorting it tomorrow so i'll pop some more pictures up!

So the dead engine is now out of the car, this is a picture of it all loose and unbolted before i lifted it out. Unfortunatly light stopped play before i could get the new lump in, so that will have to wait till the weekend now. I decided i couldn't resist playing with my minis fat 10'inchers so i popped one on first at the front and then at the back. I reckon they could be pursuaded to fit, but it might end up looking a bit rollerskate... That said the front is on stands, but the back isn't... i also pulled the chrome trim off the side, which has irritatingly pulled some paint off too, so that will need remedying too! The plans for the weekend are to get it going, give it a good clean (still have cat prints on the roof!) and to fit my comfy supportive MGZR seats inplace of the worn originals. Should smarten the interior up a fair bit!

Drop that b*tch and she'll not need anything else - those wheels look great. Nice to see her being resuscitated(sp!). Much work getting the seats to slot in?

Fantastic. Great to see her getting some attention. Can't wait to see the finished item! I apologise for the cat prints and for pumping up the suspension!
As for the engine not turning - one of the collets was missing when I first took the rocker cover off - dread to think where that has ended up. The engine was still turning by hand when I initially investigated - but then it seemed to lock. I was only turning by hand though.
Always found the seats quite comfy but can't argue with the later ones.

I think you should do a k1100 head conversion on a 1275 seen it done in minis but not a metro, would be really quick then

I think you should do a k1100 head conversion on a 1275 seen it done in minis but not a metro, would be really quick then Funny you should say that, cos i was going to build that conversion for my mini but ended up selling the head... i have another idea now though based on my mini days... should be interesting when its done - will be after Xmas now though.

Much has happened since i was last about, progress has been made and its time for an update. Having found the engine to be shot, i built up my spare 998 and eventually bolted it in. The time came to start it up, and nothing happened. On investigation i found the engine to be solid. A little strange concidering it was moving freely a week previously. I set about stripping the engine of all parts that might be obstructing movement. These included the starter, engine mounts, head and clutchslave.... still solid. So i removed this engine, and set about removing the 1275 from my mini. I knew this engine is a runner, and it was originally a metro lump anyway, so all the right bits are there. Once out i transfered all the metro mounts onto it, and dropped it into the engine bay. Whilst moving the old 998 off the drive i noticed it was turning again.... turns out i had forgotten the rear engine steady which bolts throught the flywheel housing and had locked the flywheel! It was fine all along! Annoying isn't the word! Anywho, the mini is engineless now, and the 1275 is in the metro ready to go. Everything is connected up, and the engine is turning over. I need a decent couple of hours on it to set up the timing and get it going but a combination of work girlfriend and weather is stopping me at the minute. I also need to bolt the drivers hub swivels down as the top bolt has threaded itself - which is also annoying. I lost my temper and set about the car with a rubber mallet. No worries though, because i have set of brand new wings waiting to go on it which will cure the rot and the dents - an eBay win - £3.00 for the pair, with free collection by a friend! Only a few pics this time - the car is complete once more, and i felt the need for more wheel play. I've done small so i tried big this time - my girlfriends chavvy 17's which don't actually fit the arches because they are too big. Metro donk anybody?! More soon, luck prevailing!
