Good news....I sat in car and mirrors are within reach Small update - DVLA have responded saying I will receive a letter in a few days telling me how I can re-register my car (that will be BIVA then) Anyhooo............ I CNC routed a rear window surround the other day from 7mm birch ply, some sanding & paint & it will look original. If others want one I would need a good template on paper of an unchopped one, but then could cut them out easily. Also picked up my new diff today from Langy's Rod Shop - built by Paul at Southern Axles in Watford, both giving sterling service - Paul built the diff in half a day for me before he went off on hols just so my 84 year old dad could have a ride in the car this weekend. Steve paid the bill for me & collected it so I could pick it up from him. It turns out my original LSD wasn't! it was a std open diff, which explains why it broke I guess. 9" of Nodular iron Heavy duty goodness TrueTrack LSD should handle all I can throw at it.

Q PLATE !!! , Hope you don't have to but if its the only way then so be it There is no way around a Q-plate unless your build starts with a new shell/chassis from a recognised source and a majority of the parts used for the buildup come from a single donor vehicle. You can then apply for an age-related plate based on the year of registration for the donor vehicle once the IVA test is completed. I don't know why people get so stuffy when it comes to Q-plates.

It's the misguided notion that a Q plate automatically denotes a shonky lash up of a kit car cobbled together with bubblegum and rivets in someone's shed. There's no reason a Q plate can't be worn with pride, demonstrating just how much you've done yourself and it should in a case like this be regarded as a badge of distinction.

Been very busy making mods to the car to meet the IVA rules, it's going well and luckily all the mods are fairly easy to do. A bit more progress on the car, I've done a little more interior trimming, bulkhead so far with over the screen & doors next. Also been playing with the CNC router at work - trial run for the steering wheel & gearknob inserts. Not bad for first attempt;

Dunno why people get so bent out of shape by a Q plate, at least you can use the darn car on the road legally and it's a good conversation starter! I ran a Rover 420D on a Q plate.... it was an oddball as it had the top of the range interior and climate pack but MGZS running gear and the engine had been 'fiddled with'...handled beautifully and went like a bat out of hell. Built 1998 at a place near Oxford. Never could prove exactly what it was but it was an animal.
Good to see this getting closer, it's all the little details that make it special. Well done.

There is no way around a Q-plate unless your build starts with a new shell/chassis from a recognised source and a majority of the parts used for the buildup come from a single donor vehicle. You can then apply for an age-related plate based on the year of registration for the donor vehicle once the IVA test is completed. Not quite correct there. You can use a brand new body or anything you choose if you like - as long as you use at least 2 major components from a donor vehicle (engine & gearbox) you can apply for an age related plate based on the age of those components. You then can buy a personalised plate after if you wish. I will be stuck with a Q sadly - not so much the Q as I want a 6 digit plate and the Q will be a 7 digit. I will inquire with DVLA to see if there is any options for "upgrading" a Q for a more personalised one - Q53 POP would be good!! - in exchange for some pictures of the queen.

Holidays and hospital visit have stopped play for a while but managed a little work on the car tonight, finished off the trim panel above the screen. It covers the access holes in the upper screen panel, so no more sharp edges for the tester man to find It also was something I needed to do as I've not finished all the interior trim yet anyway. It fits here; in reality only a couple of inches are visible but I photo'd it from below.

73 pages of inspiration... epic read isn't the word. Taken a few hours but so very, very worth the read.
As to Q plates, I also look at it as a badge of honour, something to show individuality. I think i've got three Q's now... As supaimpy says Q is for Quality, I like that. Not sure it applies to all of mine but...
It is worth talking to the DVLA kits and rebuilds division I've got a number if you haven't already got it, should be on the paperwork they sent you with the VIN number on. Q's used to be issued by the respective LVLO but now they are closed and it's all centrally (? since when has Swansea been 'central'?) controlled they may have some say in what number you get issued. Play nice and see what happens, nothing to lose by asking and Q53POP would be superb. As it doesn't show up on any of the data check engines I use there is a good chance it's available.
Are we being watched? Very likely...
