Yep, house being re-pointed & I'm repairing the gutters. Yay! an update. Painted the bonnet mesh, rear lightbox & towhook parts. Also painted the number plates by brush - hoping to be able to machine these from ally later so I can spray them properly then. Looking in my stainless fasteners I found some nice rounded top 8mm button heads, these are perfect for filling the bonnet scoop holes (need to polish them!) Mesh temp fitted in place, just need to fabricate the fixings to mount it off the scoop bolts. Lightbox fitted to car - almost invisible Until you switch the lights on - nice & bright.

Does the IVA include reg plate size compliance?
Do you get a reg number prior to the IVA pass?
Or, as I have just thought, these are test plates but ones that you would like? :-)
Sometimes I am amazed by my quick-wittedness :-)

No sizes laid down, but you have to have plate mounting areas. If you turn up with plates fitted its a fail.

I assume that you don't get a choice in reg number?

No, unfortunately not. It will be a Q 123 ABC format.
These plates are just show plates for a bit of fun.

You could ask it you can have a 2 number reg so you can fit it all on to a square rear plate.

As far as I can tell Q53POP is still viable, maybe worth some serious butt kissing in Swansea...

No to all those questions, you get what you are given. Once a Q plate is issued you cannot change it.

It's a shame you can't choose a reg you get some choice on a new car. I'm sure if there was interest like there is with buying personal plates DVLA could make some extra cash out of selling a choice. Maybe nobody has thought of it yet. If you could actually get to talk to someone within the department dealing with Q plates you might stand a chance. I have got direct numbers to talk to people in the past when my driving licence paperwork got lost and also the team who do the vehicle history checks but that was only after I paid for one to be done.

You are most certainly an inspiration on how to not give up, that's for sure!
This for me however, raises a few questions.
I don't know the full details but let's say some one at the DVLA saw a picture of your build or some jealous knob reported you to them for not conforming to the latest 8 point or whatever system? The DVLA revoke your logbook and say that to get it back with a Q plate reg, you need to pass the BIVA test with smooth edges and cuddly bits etc?
With this in mind, you have amazingly gone through each item making sure it should pass and you will get a Q plate once through the test?
Now, the question bit.. We all know that the Q plate has been around for donkeys years and mainly avoided at all costs but surely, your car will be the 1st bad ass street rod to actually PASS the test? This if anything should make it more desirable? I know you didn't build it for its value but surely someone would pay more for a BIVA proof rod?
2nd quick question.. With all of the above in mind, how does Andy Frosts Red Victor car stay 'Road Legal' as I wouldn't think he would go through the test as it is? He can't get by on the eight point rule so surely its a matter of time before the DVLA remove his logbook? Are all rodders living in fear? The prices currently don't reflect this?
Sorry to go on but I'm a hotrod guy at heart and would love to understand more for when I take the plunge...

Andy Frost did have the l8gbook revoked for red victor as itwasnt even remotely redvictor2 any where. And he has passed the BIVA and got a new age related plate and has to go through the latest catalyst emissions as well i believe as it's classed as a new build. To the OP, this is just an awesome build and as said above, a real credit that you have stood by the rules and making something to comply with them instead of just giving up

If Andy has done as you say then a massive well done BUT... Age related plate? That goes against what Mr Pop is saying and I can't see how RV3 would pass the sphere switch test etc?

On rv3 it's classed as a new build or age related if it can be proven that a significant amount of parts are from a donor vehicle, as far as I understand it. And rv3 has removable front end, so it may not be the same BIVA test front end The bonnet mounted exhaust for the waste gate I'm sure wouldn't have been allowed

I'm not the first Hot rod to pass the test, but I am different in that I admitted that I lost the reg. It's happened to ohers but they have kept quiet.
Andy's engine block is pre 76 so he only had (has) to pass a smoke test - no emissions. As mentioned, someone grassed him up so he had to go through IVA as well.
Once you have a Q plate you have a car with the full 14 points again, so you can then modify it within the 8 points system before it loses it's right to it's reg all over again.
Hopefully my car WILL be worth more in the long term as you say it is fully road legal once it passes, so far safer than other cars from a registration point of view.

what your doing is the correct way in the eyes of the law / DVLA . Once passed i believe your car will be worth even more than it already is ( not that your selling but for insurance maybe ) . A inspiration to us all , hat is doffed

Not much progress recently due to holidays and house renovations.
I've at last finished the new glass templates and sent them off to Pilkingtons so apart from a rather hefty price tag the glass will be compliant in a few weeks time. That will be the most expensive bit done to pass the test.

More spending tonight, carb calibration kit on its way from America, hopefully this will get emissions low enough to pass the test.
