Nothing much to photo from tonights progress. Wings were cooked nicely indoors so they were rubbed down again, one wing was ok, but the other had many, many runs in it. Not sure how I made such a mess of it, but never mind.
Epoxy primer is tough stuff, I had to use 120 grit to get the runs flatted off and even then it only broke through the primer in a couple of places before the whole lot was flatted back with 400 grit. I then mixed up a new lot of primer with much less thinners in it and shot a nice thick sticky coat on both wings. I'll leave them a couple of days to harden off well before they get rubbed back for hopefully topcoat if all looks good.
Last job of the night was to flip the fuel tank over & paint the base in gloss black. It's our local club meet tomorrow night so the paint will have 2 days to cure before I touch it again.

Mask, mask, mask, sand, sand, sand...........and some primer again. Decided to only do one front wing at a time, they are just a bit too bulky to do together and I only had time to sand one in an evening anyway.... I do like the high sheen you get with epoxy if you don't thin it very much. It looks good, but it's actually really helpful to check for panel straightness before topcoat as the shine shows any imperfection easily. It's not quite as glossy as it looks in the photo, it's more of an eggshell finish. I finished up the night with a second brush coat of black on the bottom of the fuel tank. 561 hours.

Putting up Christmas decorations and doing a bit of work on the Daily saw me only getting into the garage at 4pm today. As such I got less done than I was planning. I got another coat of gloss on the underside of the car, final coat will go on tomorrow. I also got a few other parts into first coat of gloss, the main one being the gearbox crossmember; and the other front wing is now masked up and was flatted off ready for a full coat of primer which was also laid on. 565 hours.

Another short stint in the garage today as I was doing my covid centre volunteering this morning and it was super busy there, so had a bit of a snooze after lunch as its an early start for the vaccine centre. It might have been short but it was a nice productive session. Many parts got prepped for paint before I mixed up a big batch of paint and gave the bottom of the car it's final coat. Note there is now no bar holding it up anymore, it's now roped through the roof. A better idea of colour is this photo; Several more parts got painted after that, the gearbox crossmember got its second coat as did the inside of the inner front wings; The battery tray got done too; as well as some small parts such as the bootlid strap holders and filler neck; The last of the paint in the gun got used up coating a bit of the floor inside. 567 hours.

Thanks, Phil picked it but I do approve Hurray!!! the last of the underside at the back got done tonight, there are a few places that will get done with a brush where the spraygun could not reach, but that's the back 2/3rds done. The front section from the door hinge point forwards needs doing, but that's pretty easy with no awkward bits anywhere. Once I've brushed in the relevant parts tomorrow the car can be dropped back down again. Masked up and the last bit done; As I had to mix excess paint to spray properly (using a gravity gun for that bit) I painted a few other small parts, one of which is the 3rd brake backplate. This will be silver inside eventually, but the edges need to be grey. The rest was used up on the floor again; We are only going for waterproof-ness on the inside of the car, not show so it does not matter if it's a bit piecemeal coverage. 569 hours.

Nothing photo worthy to show for tonights work. I painted all the bits underneath where the spragun did not reach - like the top edges of the sills and the tops of the chassis outriggers etc.
Then I lowered the car back down onto the stands, it looks weird being able to see over the roof again.
I had planned to block back the nose section of the car & prime it, but I ran out of time and it's only half way through being prepped for paint.

Thanks Phil. I finished sanding the nose tonight, sanding all of the grill ribs took blimmin' ages! I see sanding stuff in Phil's future... Finally finished it got treated to a nice solid coat of primer again. Car looks so low now it's not tied to the roof anymore, lol. 573 hours.

sand, sand, sand, sand, sand, sand I hate grill shell ribs and louvres. I hoped to get the inner wings in gloss tonight, but they just took too long to prep. Second inner wing is started here, First one is all done and the rear side masked up, I had to mask each louvre individually under the masking paper; But I did have time to get the first 2 coats of gloss on the grill shell - nice 575 hours.

We treated the staff at work today to an Indian take away lunch in liu of a Christmas lunch, so sent them all home afterwards. This meant I also left early so I had some time this afternoon to do more on Phil's car. The grill shell was flatted down again ready for its next 2 coats of paint and the inner wing prep was completed. Did I mention I hate louvres? they take a lot of masking up This is under the paper masking. But then they got covered in paint Not bad gloss so far; Grill had 2 more coats added, looks shiny but got a few small runs on it - luckily all but one are on the bolt flange face so wont be seen. Typically there are no runs at all on the inside of the grill Only one is visible, I'll see how it flats out tomorrow but I might have to give the outside of the grill one more coat if it does not dissappear when sanded. 577 hours.

Thanks Norman. The paint will be completely wet sanded and polished yet to get a proper gloss on it.

Thanks everyone it's nice to get feedback. Paint runs. We all get them, no one likes them. How to deal with them if you get them? So a quick tutorial for those who may not know. The offending runs on the front grill were here; The first job is to slice off the worst of the run. Use a brand new blade only, lay it flat on the paint and carefully shave off the top of the run. You can do this in several small shaves, use the middle of the blade only and you can flex the blade a little if necessary to avoid shaving the surrounding paint.
The reason for shaving the run is that you don't want to be sanding the paint around the run and if you try to just sand it you will end up removing paint around the run and still have a bump in the middle. You can see one of the paint shavings on the lower grill bar in the left of the photo.
Once the paint has been shaved you can then very carefully wet sand it with plenty of water using 1500 grit wet & dry. Wipe the paint often to see how you are doing. Once it looks uniformly flat move on to grade 2500 wet & dry. You should end up witth it looking like this once it is flatted properly. Then using cutting compound and some hand waffle mops (I currently have Farecla, but 3M is meant to be better) The left mop is harder for the G3 and the dark grey is softer for the G10.
It should end up looking like this.
This took me about 10-15 mins from start to finish. The grill will get properly colour sander and machine polished at a later date.
Moving on from that I started work on one of the front wings. I flatted it off ready for topcoat but discovered a flat spot on it so some filler was mixed up and applied. Using the Infra red lamp the filler was cured in 15 minutes and was then sanded back to lose the flat spot. Sanding the primer did result in several small imperfections over the wing so combined with the new filler as well I decided to lay on a coat of Green Ti high build filler. Mixed with enough thinners this time it went on rather nicely.
The other parts for gloss were the inner front wings, these were also keyed up for new paint and another 2 coats applied on them. These are now finished and can be packed away with the grill shell at Phils house.
Comments or questions welcome.
