Been a while since last update, progress has been made but nothing photo worthy. Some stuff worth taking photos has been done now though Rear floor is now fully glossed on the underside, so its time to do the inside. Grey primer is on here prior to the silver topcoat which should go on soon. Also started prepping the trans tunnel for paint before the heatproof paint goes on. Seam sealer is over some of the welds to smooth them for paint, as ally does not grind off smoothly as it just clogs the grinder discs. Its now got its first coat of epoxy primer on it.

Oh sweet! Can't wait to see that all bolted in place inside the gloss black shell. In my head I thought it would be all black inside too, but silver was an excellent choice!

I'm a bit mad Matt, as it will all be covered in black carpet Always thought it would be cool to have the silver painted trans tunnel poking out of the black carpet, but I think the heat issue might put a stop to that?

Well, bollux. Bollux, bollux, bollux Bought a new HVLP spraygun to try out and thought I'd use it on the final coat of clear on the rear floor. I'd run some thinners through it the night before to see how it sprayed so all seemed good. Mixed some clearcoat up and went to spray. Arrggghhhh!!!! Bloody fisheyes all over the paint. Immediatly wiped it down with a thinners soaked rag and tried another small patch. Same thing. Re-wiped panel as it may have got contamination on it (unlikely). Threw paint away and ran more thinners through gun and mixed fresh batch of paint. Same thing! Chucked paint into trusty DeVilbiss gun and shot a coat over, but it still has some fisheyes in the paint, so will be sanding the whole lot back again today Stripped gun completely after to see what the problem was, and behind the needle tip there was a big mass of what appeared to be silicone sealer in there!!?? or possibly (solid) silicone grease? WTF? ? Cleaned all this out and will try some paint on a test panel tonight, on the upside the gun did seem to spray well with much less overspray though.

Ive found using stone grinding discs works great on ally , as you say normal steel ones clog up , bet you knew this already though.

Remmoc, yeah. Flat sanding disc and WD40 works best, can produce a really smooth surface, but I could not be bothered for inside the tunnel as no-one will see it. I spent last night flatting the floor panel down and then painstakingly 'dobbed' in all the pits in the clearcoat with a tiny brush. Then flatted it all back again this morning to try another clearcoat on it. I broke through the silver in a coupe of places, so blew those back in first then went over with another coat of clear. All seemed ok with the new gun this time, it does lay the paint on nice. On the last few 'finish' passes though, bloody fisheyes appeared again (only a few though). Looks like I'll have to flat it right back and start again as the silver looks a bit patchy too now as well You can see the curse word parts on this photo. i483.photobucket.com/albums/rr192/blackpopracing/rear-floor-curse word.jpg[/IMG] On the plus side I silvered and clearcoated the ignition panel, and that seemed to come out ok. Also used new gun to gloss grey the underside of the tunnel, and this came out lovely

Ah mate! Gutted. I am not friends with sissing. So much to put it right again and a real mojo killer - especially on the final lacquer coat as well!! Ho hum, patience is a virtue they say

Thanks Mate, Its all rubbed down again and stopper is in the low spots. Its a credit to 2 pack paint as I attacked it with 150 grit paper for an hour grading back to 400 grit and I could not get it to break through to the silver basecoat and the paint is only 2 days old! It all looks a bit sorry for itself now I moved on to the heat insulating paint tonight, it went on well with the shutz gun and did not use much at all for a heavy coat, just as well seeing how expensive it is. I hope it works as well as they reckon it does, should keep all the engine/trans heat from coming through. It takes 48 hours to dry and 14-28 days to cure, so will be put to one side for now.

Wow!! Dead pleased with the heatproof paint Looked at it tonight and it flowed out really nice overnight, so its reasonably smooth now, not like the sandfaced house paint finish it had last night, so it should overcoat rather nicely. Its also dried really quickly, probably helped by the fact the garage was about 27 deg C today ;D Can'y wait to do the other panels now.

Awsome job!
I find that a block of lanolin and a flap disk works really well on ally?

More progress Got another coat of the heat barrier paint on, probably another coat to go yet as they recommend 2-4mm thick (I'll go for 2-3mm). And its all silver again, yay!! ;D
